It happens during facetime calls as well so carrier can be ruled out.

I also get this, it happens during the following:

Mobile calls
O2 Wifi calling
VoIP calls using Bria

Doesn't happen al the time, toggling the speaker on/off clears it

Audio during Music and Movie playback is unaffected.

Update: Been on to Apple and as I got it from O2 on Saturday they said to just return it and get a replacement. Doing a full factory restore and update via iTunes just to make sure its not an issue with the shipping build and then off to O2 I guess :/

It’s not that simple. I did not have this issue on my iphone 7 or the 7 plus on ios11.
Hence why I said potentially haha. I think the fact that this issue is intermittent says it all. I just want it to stop as a $1500 phone should not be sounding like I have Rice Bubbles crackling in my ear

Same problem here on an iPhone 8 64GB Silver in Spain.

I'm experiencing the same issue as described in this thread. I just called Apple Support and of course they didn't know about this problem. After a 50-minute call and speaking with two different people (regular and superior Support Departments), they offered a replacement unit. I suggested them to hold the replacement for one week to see how this evolves since some of you guys (i.e. #200) said the replacement unit experiences the same issue.

I told them about this thread to let them know this is a widespread problem (they said they "cannot trust third-party forums"). Since toggling the speaker on and off sometimes fixes temporarily the problem, I would also say it is a software related issue.

I scheduled a call with Apple Support Superior Department for next Monday and wait for updates from Apple. If next week we don't get any clarification, I'll ask for the replacement unit / refund before 14 days after purchase and see if this is fixed.

I’m going for the same strategy. Keep us posted!

It’s Apple’s new strategy for SAR/RF Exposure Awareness Month.. use headphones.

That’s exactly what i’ve decided to do, wait for a call from them until Friday. If there’s no call or explanation by Apple, i’ll ask for the replacement telephone.

Gold iPhone 8 64GB here, bought through Telenor in Sweden.

Also seeing the same issue as outlined here, a audible ticking sound during some phone calls, not too loud but loud enough to irritate. Toggling the speaker phone mode on and then off again sometimes removes the issue, but it's not consistent. In my call with the Apple support on this actual issue the ticking sound actually returned after toggling speaker phone off, and only on the second attempt did the issue go away.

One additional thing I experience that I haven't seen anyone mention; the sound is gradually getting more frequent on the occasions when it happens. The sound is still the same, but where it originally only clicked at the end of a sound on the other end of the line after a while it increases so it also clicks during the other person speaking.

I have an 8 plus arriving tomorrow. Hoping I don’t have to deal with this, but it is looking like it is affecting just about everyone.

Good luck and keep me in the loop, I’d love to know the outcome!

Got back and did a quick setup of the phone, 10 test calls no crackle. Got a silver one this time rather than Gold. Heres hoping it stays working.

I'm experiencing this as well on iPhone 8Plus on ATT. Went by my local Apple Store and they told me they didn't even have replacement stock for the 8/8Plus yet and to just wait another week or return it to my carrier. Hoping to see this fixed via Software.

Not looking good for a software solution if that’s the case. Please keep us updated if the issue manifests itself in future calls.

once i disabled "noise cancelation" under the accessibility menu, I have not been able to reproduce the crackle.

I have tried that. It worked for the first couple of calls, then it returned.

Interestingly enough, I can reproduce it more when I have a case on, than when it's "naked".

Good for you, but that's not good news in general. This points towards it being a hardware issue. Let's see how this goes.

Didn’t work for me. Given that I have an 8 an 8+ with the same issue, different build weeks in different factories, if it’s hardware, it’s going to be a complete lottery. Add to this the usual Apple screen defects and it’s getting not worth it again.

Like others have said in other threads, it’s a pity that iOS is only available on Apple devices!

Lots have gotten replacement phones that still had problems.

Keep us updated if it returns with a crackle at some point but I hope for your sake it’s perfect and stays that way! Apple told me to bring mine back and swap it out with a new one. So I’ll duck into the Apple store over the next few days.

Is anyone else experiencing a crackling static noise from the earpiece during facetime or cellular calls? Strange thing is this noise happens randomly, roughly 1 in 3 calls. This is happening on iphone 8 plus.

I bought a brand new iPhone 8 256GB Space Grey from Apple to which was pre-ordered to arrive on release day. The phone arrived and I have the exact same issue. Went to the Apple Store today and they swapped the phone straight out for an identical unit. However there is no change even when setting up as a new iPhone! I can still hear the ticking!! Do you guys think it might be a software update issue?
