Nicely done!

The mouse is very good, cannot fault it. How are you finding the Hades 68? Which switches did you go for?

Silent Red and Cherry Brown! It's so wonderful I had to buy two :). I went with the Taurus K320 for both (Silent Red / Cherry Brown).

Yep. I recently built a new PC myself. I went big though.

Not sure I'm keeping the water cooling AIO. Hate the extra cables and tubes. Plus, air cooling is just as good these days.

Nice, I’m building in the same case right now.

I don’t think I was bashing anyone’s opinion but rather stating my own experiences and difference of options. I’m not against anyone thinking anything. There are people out there that think eating snails is awesome. That doesn’t mean if someone says they sucked down a whole snail I’m going say how awesome that sounds. I’ll say it sounds gross because that's what I think 😂

You just offended every French person on the planet. Nice going. What’s next, you gonna go after smoking cigarettes and drinking wine? 😂😂😂

I grew up on Dos, 3.11. I actually typed on Windows 1.3 on a 286 as a child. My first login was Windows 95 on a 200mb partition (deleting text files to get enough space to install games). I spent a lot of time on Windows NT, 2000, XP, 7, and 10. I know Windows like the back of my hand (I'm a .net programmer / manager by trade).

So, what you're saying is that there is lots of trauma from your childhood. 😂😂😂

I'm someone who struggles to be content with either Mac or Windows. Over the past 5 years I have changed from Mac to Windows, back to Mac and find myself pondering the switch again back to Windows. During the switch I have also moved ecosystems where I was solely on Google when using Windows, but moved back into Apple ecosystem where I am now.

There are pros/cons for each system.

For Mac
Pros: I love the Retina display, the aesthetics of the OS, the yearly improvements, the native apps and the integration.

Cons: I dislike the cost to performance ratio, the weak iGPU in the Mac mini, the small daily issues (bluetooth Audio randomly cuts out for a few seconds on a call, safari lags hard on some websites, AirPlay to my HomePod being ropey, etc) and office isn't as polished, gaming isn't as accessible (tried the eGPU thing, that has it's own issues).

For Windows
Pros: I love that I can build a PC to my exact specs, get something that is very powerful, play games easily, office apps run tons better, so much more flexibility when it comes to configurations and hardware.

Cons: I dislike the lack of retina - I tried a 4K monitor with Windows scaling and the experience was so so. This usually means I'm running a 1440p monitor which doesn't look as crisp as my 4K UltraFine. I don't like the built in apps for mail and calendar, usually resort to using Outlook or Google calendar. The OS doesn't look as good and feels a little stale year to year.

The last time I switched to Windows I changed ecosystems, this time I am considering just having my desktop as Windows. This doesn't actually bring too many issues in terms of the apps I use and integration. Majority of people I message use WhatsApp, but I still have access to iMessage on my iPhone. My calendar is already in Google, and using iCloud email is fine, just add it to Outlook. Photos I pretty much exclusively use/edit on my phone. I don't take calls on my Mac mini because the experience hasn't been good. I would probably move back to Spotify and sell the HomePod, the rest of the house is Sonos and Google home mini which work better with Spotify.

Thanks for reading. Mostly a brain dump to help order my thoughts. Still undecided. I did toy with the idea of having both systems, but I don't have space.

Strange my Bluetooth has almost no issues during phone calls.

I really wish it were that simple. For gamers like the OP (and myself), it becomes a bit more complicated. I prefer the Apple ecosystem, but there are too many sacrifices and roadblocks for gamers. Maybe one day....

Most use PC's for work not games.

I did this with my current Mac mini with an eGPU, but the experience was average and trying to playing games on a 4K monitor while taking a 30% performance hit on the GPU is hard to swallow.

For me the messages aren't much of an issue, in the UK 90% of people use WhatsApp which has a native desktop app.

Today I am working from my Windows laptop to give me some perspective. For my job I use Office and a browser all day, so for those tasks Windows is better. Chrome is lovely on Windows, Office runs a lot better as well.

I logged into Spotify on my Windows laptop and immediately appreciated the recommendations, so many new songs that Apple doesn't seem to want to tell me about even though they are my most listened to artists. I've cancelled Apple music from renewing as I'm seriously considering Spotify again.

Text and UI is noticeable worse on this 1080p screen, which is quite a big hurdle for me. I love my retina screen.

You are right about Office. Windows Office has more features, more apps (Publisher, Access), and boots up faster.

Most use PC's for work not games.

"The global digital PC games market is expected to grow from $4.9 billion in 2019 to about $10.5 billion in 2020 as people are staying at home for self-quarantine or due to lockdown and there is availability of an ample amount of free time."

Can you not use BootCamp?

Just finished a vanilla build Hackintosh, M.2 for each OS, super fast and easy to dual boot. Have not encountered a single problem. It is also how I found out windows is in many ways still 1990's tech ;)
I want to learn how to do this.

I had a PC when I was in high school, and then when I was in college in 2008 I bought an iMac. I've had an iMac for 12 years, and I wanted more power. I didn't want to spend too much money. I ended up selling the iMac Pro that I had (I got a good deal on it), and bought a custom built PC. The specs are very good, but I miss the screen on the iMac. I also really really miss iMessage. It's so weird reading all of your posts! I really identified, and thought maybe I was just being to picky or maybe I am. Performance on the PC has been good. I just don't like the big case and the fans are loud. I don't really play games. The only one I played was The Sims.

I mostly do the normal things like listen to music, email, and sometimes use Garageband, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro. I've been using AI Topaz software to upscale some videos. That was the main reason I wanted to switch. On the iMac Pro to upscale a 1080p video to 4k would last 12-15 hours!! On my PC now it takes 2 hours. That's a huge difference. I was so surprised. Topaz uses Nvidia cards to take full advantage. I'm wondering if I should have bought an eGPU to use on bootcamp with a RTX 2080 Ti.

I'm wondering if I did the right thing, and right now I want to try to build a computer with the MacOS. I know my video card, RTX 2080 Ti, is not supported. Unsure on what I should do. :/

I think what I really want right now is to try MacOS on PC, have a super quiet and small machine.

OK so the latest.

Recently I have been once again finding myself questioning things. I think it's part of my minimalist nature. Gaming, if I'm being honest doesn't give me as much joy as it once did. The only time I have a bit of fun is playing with my friends or family but that is a rarity. Also after the initial buzz and excitement of building something new I've lost interest. Now have a completely overkill water cooled PC without the passion to maintain it or make use of it's power. So I sold it to my brother.

So where does that leave me? I'm on my work Lenovo Thinkpad 13 laptop currently and to be honest it's absolutely fine for my needs. I work with Cloud software so there is no need to have a powerful machine, nothing runs locally. Why not just stick with the work laptop you ask? Well my other hobby is photography which involves editing in Lightroom.

That means I need something to replace my PC. It won't be Apple, I'm very happy with life outside of Apple and Windows is really good for running Office 365 apps.

I want to keep things minimal with whatever I decide to replace my PC with. I want to keep the cost reasonable as well. I did consider the new Dell XPS 15 but I'm not sure it's right for me as I'm not mobile and the screen space is a bit cramped for editing.

That means I'm likely to build a new PC. I'm thinking currently that the NZXT H1 would be a good fit, it's a piece of cake to build in as it's comes with most of the components already. I think I will keep my current monitor, it's really good and I enjoy the 144Hz refresh even outside of games.

Essentially I'm swapping my water cooled PC for a smaller more modest PC.

I bought a Planar IX2790 monitor, and I think it's the same exact display as the one from the iMac! I feel like I'm running bootcamp. haha

Curious to see your next build. I'm wondering if I should have stayed with the iMac Pro, and just bought an eGPU for the times I wanted to run Windows.

Hopefully then your brother will get years of enjoyment. And he’s got you for tech support.
My new PC is also overpowered for most other things I do on it. But when I do play some games (and play badly, might I add. Most 50 year olds aren’t going to keep up with the kids when playing Modern Warfare), I do like them to look good! :p

I've put a pre-order in for the NZXT H1 case. It's more a barebones chasis with PSU, 140 AIO and PCI-Riser. I'll wait for the B550 boards and then drop in 6 score Ryzen CPU. GPU I'm undecided on yet, probably pick up something cheap until the 2020 GPUs drop later in the year.

Monitor I am not sure yet, I sold my LG 27" 1440p 144hz monitor. I may get an Ultrawide.

Grabbed a 2 month old Ryzen 5 3600x for £140 delivered, that should do the trick nicely. I'm keeping my eye on used items from a forum I'm a member of, you get some really good stuff for a decent price.

That's the same processor I'm using. Absolutely love it. Fastest CPU I've worked with yet. I found that the Wraith Spire CPU cooler it comes with does a really good job - I don't get much better with my Cool Master Hyper 212 Evo - however there is a MASSIVE difference with noise pollution. I can't hear the 212 at all, so I highly recommend that.

The out going watercooled PC had a 3900x so this isn't the fastest CPU I've had access to, however in real world performances there won't be much difference.

The NZXT H1 I have pre-ordered has a 140 AIO which will keep this CPU nice a cool.

Ah I missed that - yeah that's gotta be nice and quiet. :)

I've been considering a Mini, Pro, iMac and 16 and I'm just so annoyed at the choices that Apple gives us. What I'd like is a MiniTower Mac. Where I can add RAM, SSD, HDDs, Video cards if I want to. It would be nice if it didn't cost $5K as well. What I did was set up a 2008 Dell Studio XPS mt435. This is a Core i7 running at 2.66 Ghz and it had about 9 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD. It has had a few upgrades over the years. It was hooked up to a QHD monitor and the video card was too weak to provide native resolution.

4 8GB RAM sticks and a video card arrived today. I upgraded the system to 40 GB (4x8 + 2x4). I might go all the way to 48 GB of RAM. The video card supports up to 4K and reviews indicate that it's a good budget gaming card. I don't game so I don't need that capability. But this system should do a nice job at what I want it to do - trading and office stuff. It's going to replace my 2014 MacBook Pro 15 that I use as a desktop and I'll use it as a mobile device in the future. It's rather insane that a PC from 2008 is still quite usable in 2020.

Some of the programs that I run do run better in Windows - they run under WINE on macOS and sometimes there are compatibility issues. Windows issues: Windows Update, Antimalware, Image Optimizer.

Some stuff just works better on windows.
After a year away from MacOs I could not help and bought myself a 16'' MacBook Pro.
I was really shocked how less productive I am on it using primarily office.

I'm in much the same boat lately (can only do so much gaming when you're furloughed - think I might be burning out on that).

I do have a custom built tower I used to game on, but that I've now relegated to folding@home. In thinking about my media/streaming setup, the iMac I'm writing this on serves as my media hub.

Now when I cut the cord, I got cheap and bought an Amazon Fire Stick to watch YouTube TV through (instead of a new Apple TV to replace the 2nd gen, 720p only model that's collecting dust around here somewhere). I've read up on how one could connect their Fire Stick to their PC, but that strikes me as a comparatively inelegant solution (not to mention the fact the HDs my media is on are all formatted for Mac).

So a new Apple TV will definitely be in the cards for me once I move out and into a house (what I was planning to do before this furlough hit). In considering what to do when this iMac dies though (heaven forbid), I've been contemplating buying a base model Mac Mini.

I *could* reformat some of these drives, move my media and just fire up iTunes on my tower, but the problem there is, when I built (and later upgraded) it, I neglected to add in a wireless networking card - not quite sure I want to deal with the hassle/expense of adding one in now (even though that'd still be the cheapest option).

When it comes to streaming media/media management, it's hard to beat the simplicity/ease of use on macOS IMO.

No question, while there are certainly pluses to using macOS, I' found I can do more with windows. Plus what can be done on both platforms, generally seems to be more efficient with Windows - at least what I found with my tasks.

I loved and still love MacOs for my photo related stuff including printing.
Sometimes in the past the difference was big in favor of OsX. Right now, not so much but still prefer the Mac for it.
Or .... am I trying somehow to rationalize my Mac 16'' acquisition ?! 🤔
