Mine is crashing, too. Hmm.

I think it's great the MS did this, though. Windows Media Player for Mac really sucks, so this will be great once the crashing problem is resolved.

EDIT: Just checked and it only crashes QuickTime when I'm playing a .wmv file.

I got a crash too after I ran it the first time (after I posted of course, and after I upgraded my system fully, 10.4.4, 7.04) I tested it on an amazon stream music preview. I could never get them to work unless i loaded them via the activity window. Worked fine till I closed the window, then safair quit liking me and crashed.

that really sucks. maybe they will offer you a refund (it only humane)

I just got an email from them:
"As a recent Flip4Mac WMV Player customer, receive a $20 credit off your next Flip4Mac WMV purchase"

The next upgrade is $29, so that means I get to spend more money with them! LOL. Ah well, I guess I'll just forego the ability to transcode.

ooh cool...i downloaded the demo of this the other day. tbh what i really want is something to make it so that VLC is compatible with WMV3 as i dont particularly want to upgrade to QTPro when i only ever use VLC

Quicktime 7.04 and F4M 2.0 are not playing nicely together. I just now load up .wmv files inside a Safari window to watch a clip. Closing the Safari window doesn't crash the app as it does with QT Player.

Nermal mentioned earlier in the thread that Apple had pulled the QT update? Mmmm, as of late last night, it was in my software update, but I think I'm going to wait a couple of days or so and run all these updates at once, so I only have to restart once. But now I'm guessing that I don't want the QT update just yet.

So, is this a replacement for VLC? Or are there still things that VLC will play that this doesn't?

(never used Flip4Mac obviously...)

So did Apple pull the update or no?

Don't think so. I still have Quicktime 7.0.4 showing up in my Software Update.

(along with iTunes 6.0.2, iPod Updater 2006-01-10, and Mac OS X Update 10.4.4... not going to install everything until later)

10.4.4, at least for me, is working properly. The wmv plug-in (the old one) is also working with QT 7.0.4
iTunes is also working and has a MAJOR new feature... it can now stream to more than one speaker AND keep playing on the computer speakers... how cool is that? :D
So I guess you can have it both ways.

This is a replacement for windows media player. It is a plugin for quicktime to allow it to open windows media files. It used to cost money, but is now free, and Microsoft is shipping it out. From the bulk of this thread though, I would be weary to install it if you have updated quicktime to 7.0.4, lots of problems.

Yes, definitely giving me problems after updating to QT 7.0.4...same as described elsewhere. Previewing a .wmv file in Finder causes it to crash, and closing a QT window after playing the .wmv file causes QT to crash.

I wonder if they'll add support for WMP10-only videos (not that I've actually ever encountered one myself).

Well I have and I hope to god MS lets them add this. It's a major pain and I've converted many Windows users to the Mac and this is on thing I just tell them can't be done on a Mac and it really sucks. If they do add WMP10 support than the Mac experience would be perfect (well that, or all content on the web goes QuickTime).

Nice one. I wonder if this will now work with all those pr0n sites that use Windows Media. :p

It won't if they are using WMP10 DRM.

It's not really a replacement for VLC. I never had much luck with WMV files on VLC, but VLC (and MPlayer) is good at playing AVIs and occasionally some MPEG files that QuickTime doesn't like.

Yes, same experience.

WMV is a codec, which VLC doesn't support for whatever reason.

AVI is a wrapper (like QT) for many types of codecs, such as Divx, 3vix, Xvid, etc.

Thanks for the news and links. :)

I guess Microsoft is cutting the staff or shifting they Mac BU people from the WMP team to Vista or something. In any event hopefully they keep with the development of this plug-in for QT. :)

Below is a link for About QuickTime 7.0.1 Reinstaller availble from Apple that may alleviate the problem until Flip4Mac is updated.

I contacted Flip4Mac about the possiblity of access to WMP10 protected files and this is the response I got:

Hello ,

DRM is a complex issue due to the nature of legal rights matters. I don't have an official word, but I think management has it in mind to get Flip4Mac to work with the protected files. It's just not known at this time as to when and if it will happen. You can check back on our web site occasionally....I'm sure we'll post the info there when it's available. Sorry I don't have a more concerted answer for you, but we hope it will happen eventually.

Regards,
Tony
