We used pholdable phones for 2 decades and they really were inconvenient and not ready to receive calls like a flat one would, why would we swicth?

Because you could still use the phone normally when it’s closed, while when you open it, it would be like an iPad with split screen and everything 👍 Well, at least that’s how I picture it, lol.

Aren't all foldable phones made with plastic screens? Seems like a step back, I like touching glass.
Apple will tell you what you are touching, and you will love touching that display because apple said so. 😁😂 👉📱📱

On a serious note lol, hopefully they have something other that plastic cooking in their secret lab 🤔

You cant bend a glass, for now, its being unrealistic
Despite of that, Samsung put a slight glass layer underneath the screen
Better to ask Fold 2 owners, they can tell the touching difference between Fold 1 (pure plastic screen) and Fold 2

I have a Fold 2. It feels like glass, but it's soft. The screen can get dented if you press too hard.

Folding phones don’t really excite me. I’m mean let’s see what the actual 3rd gen apple folding phone or tablet looks like but again I’m like eghhhh

I don't get the fold Z. What's the point? For people with nano-pockets? On the other hand, a fold 2 makes a lot of sense: an iPad that you can put in your pocket.

I agree with you. It seems like nothing more than a novelty because it doesn't allow you to do anything you couldn't do on a normal phone. It doesn't even take up less space technically, the volume of the device is just rearranged when it's in a closed form. Instead of having a flat slab in your pocket you have a bulging square.

Folding phones will not become mainstream until it has the ability to be as reliable as non-folding phones.
More like it won’t be main stream until the price reduces by a lot.

Apple are rumoured to be ordering from both Samsung and LG so they clearly think they can sell these in high numbers

Did you mean Z Flip?
Z Flip: its having a 12 Pro Max when fold, once its in your pocket, it will even smaller than your credit card
Z Fold: its comparable to a book, indeed once fold, its like having a (mini) iPad
Fold is better for choice imo, 2 usable screens
Flip has only usable screen (the other screen is so small and only use for notification)

A lot of people want a small square instead of a large rectangle in their pockets.

To paraphrase Steve, I won't know if I want it until I see it.

In an abstract sense, foldables seem a bit impractical to me. I've had my share of flip phones - there was a benefit to folding in order to cover the physical keyboard (avoid pocket dialing) and prevent display breakage (back before the days of super-tough glass formulations), but it also added an additional step - unfolding - before every use and every so often they accidentally folded during use.

Before the flip phone I had much bulkier, non-folding cell phones - the flip phones were no thicker than the non-folding phones. Overall they were smaller than their predecessors in all dimensions. However, a folding "slab phone" would trade off smaller dimension in one vector with greater dimension in another. I'm not sure of the benefit when it comes to an iPhone-sized device.

However, an iPad mini that fits in a pocket at all (approx. 5.5" x 4" x 0.6") might be attractive. Still, comparing the 4" width of this supposed device to the 3.07" width of a 12 Pro Max - it could be a very tight fit in my jeans.

I'm also concerned about long-term durability. It's certainly not impossible to achieve, but anytime additional flexure is added to the engineering mix the challenges increase.

Actually, Corning has developed bendable thin glass.

AR glasses + small iPhone with screen extension(s) thanks to AR on glasses display > foldable iPhone.
(what?... were talking about unreleased products after all). Foldables are cool now, they will lose their appeal as soon as we have working AR products that can generate huge screens extending content from small phone to whatever size we need while on the go.
This is my dream, let me dream... 😂

It's interesting that there are several posters saying they have no interest in a foldable iPhone. But, if sales of foldable phones cut into Apple's market share, you can be sure they will put one out there. Apple doesn't mind if 25% of iPhone users have no desire for a foldable iPhone if there is a chance to pull in 10% or more of people inclined to buy an Android that folds.

You would think that a foldable phone that it's made up of two glass panels that when folded open they butt tightly against each other and form what would seem like a continuous screen. The butt joint could be pretty precise as Apple usually achieves such that you would not feel the joint or hardly see the joint. It would be glass to glass butted together very tightly with nothing in between. It seems to me that's better than a plastic bulge.

It would also seem to me that even if they get glass thin enough to bend it would have most of the properties of plastic as far as being able to dimple with your finger and bulge at the bend. It would only achieve scratch resistance.
