What are you trying to accomplish? Seriously.

We do not care what you think. This is MacRumors. We are Mac fans.

It's a shocker I know!

Im just trying to play the other side... -- You guys are just extremely biased.

It's not like no one here has used a Windows P/C before.

We also understand what it's like to be tight on a budget.

I get the impression that your budget is affecting your decision more than your desire to buy an Apple computer.

If we know what you can afford and we know what you realistically expect from
a new system, it would be much easier to help you with a decision.

My two cents on this discussion: I love Apple with all my heart, but if Mac OS X could run on any Intel box, I'd switch to a PC box so quickly my head would spin.

Granted, I'd probably be in the camp that builds their own PC, but the point is, I'm interested in whatever box runs OS X - Apple's or someone else's.

(Which is probably why Apple's been so keen to discourage people running Mac OS X on non-Apple boxes...)

and whats the solution on Mac? pay another 150 for Word? sure iWork is like 70, but it still costs money -- and doesn't come with some essential things like a spreadsheat prog.

besides; if you have half a brain; openoffice works fine! and is free.

I don't pay a dime when it comes to software. I'm not paying for it if it's just some 1s and 0s. I get it from the newsgroups or a slew of torrent sites.

Now that right there is ignorant.

I'm not paying for software when it's free. However, I'm not robbing an Apple store to get my iMac. I'm giving them a few grand one day. They can bend overif they want to complain about me downloading and testing a few of their apps.

I like this mindset. Hey, don't get me wrong, I am not advocating piracy, but until software publishers give us specific assurances and gurantees rather than hide behind a "license" that basically states I am giving them money for nothing, I rather they just get the nothing that they promised to deliver to me to start with.

OPTICAL DRIVE Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability edit
MONITORS Video Ready w/o Monitor edit
VIDEO CARD 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache edit
just a point, 256Mb ram is around $75 more expensive than the 128Mb video card in 20" iMac, and 16X DVD writer is different than 8X DVD writer.

i c , the thing is that mac production line doesn't have any decent low end product meet people's <$600 budget (with LCD).
And I can not disagree with you more about that weird statement "the pc will be slow as hell in a year", that is way too imaginary and biased.

I didn't mean that the PC would be obsolete, I meant that the system would be bogged down with disk frags and other annoying windows shіt. When Apple comes out with a 500-600 dollar pc with a keyboard and monitor, Windows would probably slip.

i wouldn't consider apple too expensive because of what you get.
1.osx 10.4 doesn't have 114000 known viruses
2.you can have both windows and osx on same machine due to bootcamp
3.the pc equivalent is the same price or even more expensive.

just buy a mac
not one virus went inside my windows machine (athlon xp 2000+, 512mb, 128 vga card and os: XP) since day one of it up and running. you just how to protect it. just one good reason to get a mac, just turn it on and use it.

The new core duo mini is more than enough computer for most essential needs.
In fact a lot of professionals had less computing power in their older G4 iBooks and PowerBooks.

If you just need a very basic system, you can still do quite well with a refurb or even an older G4 mini.

We see numerous young people in these forums who have worked very hard to save for a good system and we always do our best to advise them on choosing the right system to suite their needs.

We also help out many retired people on fixed incomes, who simply want a system that works with the least amount of trouble.

If you can buy or build a Windows based system for less GREAT!
If you don't mind the constant threat of Windows viruses and malware
because you're and expert user, more power to you.

We volunteer our time here to help people make an informed buying decision with the best information available.
If they need help on technical issues, someone can usually find the answers.
