Challenge topic(s): Golden Hour and/or Shoot anything at 50mm
Remember that film's 50mm equivalent is ~35mm on a crop digital.

I have 2 pics to start. These were taken with my P&S the last time I was in Costa Rica. Probably the most amazing sunsets I've ever seen.

And

Supposed to have some interesting weather this weekend at home (Denver, CO) and I'm hoping to catch some good golden hour shots with my 50mm

Shot with a Canon AE-1 Program. Don't remember the rest of the details but I know it was a 50mm 1.4 lens and some cheap film I bought at Wal-Mart since I wasn't sure if this camera even worked. =)

55mm 2.8. Shallow DOF is a challenge in its self.

I really like the feel of this photo. Perhaps cause it was film. I don't think they are the same but it reminds me of the purple flowered plants on the coast in Pacific Grove and Monterey, CA. Ice plants maybe?

This is an old snapshot from Pacific Grove. I think they are the same plants.

This is what I was trying to figure out a few weeks ago with my 50mm. How close were you to the subject. At 55mm, f/2.8 and a 4' distance you only have a 2" DOF. I was trying to get the minimum depth of field to get a flower like this in focus at around f/2.2. It seemed to be possible but only from about 5 to 6 feet from the subject. The lens could focus down to about 2' but the DOF was so small it was almost impossible on something the size of this flower. It would have to be a very flat flower.

Thanks for the comments! I think you're right about them being Ice Plants. I Google'd it and they look pretty similar. I never knew the actual name until now.

These flowers cover both sides of a ditch that lead all the way to a house about half a mile down. Along the way theres some palm trees and a huge tree that fell over across the ditch. Really pretty place. =)

That is just about exactly what I ran into with this shot. I was about 3 feet from the flower at 2.8. My lens is a short zoom (28-75) and I had it set to 50 on the lens barrel. I'm getting on the old side and my vision isn't super sharp so the manual focus I used was a bit iffy. Given the size of the flower, my guess is the DOF was 2 inches at best.

Taft beach, Oregon in the late, late afternoon...

Looking toward Siletz Bay and away from the Pacific shoreline you can see just a small part of the driftwood that washes ashore on this stretch of beach each winter. The main reason is this is right near the point where the bay empties into the Pacific, and the high tides do some very interesting things here in shaping the landscape. A 'golden hour' shot.

I've seen some of your driftwood shots before. They are all very nice. This has very nice light. Great capture. (I guess that's why they call it the golden hour...)

This was with my 50mm at f/22, 1/160 on top of our black breakfast table. If I had a removable flash it would've probably been more interesting.
