first off...

If you guys that are having problems with the extra apps would read the "read me" file first it tells you exactly where to download the other apps and where to put them.
My problem with Fourty Two is that is produced two mpgs that work great in Quicktime but I can't burn them as a VCD. Toast won't let me use the mpgs to burn a VCD.
In an updated version I'd like to see some sort of progress bar to see how much longer that I have to wait for Fourty Two to complete the task.

i followed the readme exactly (even correcting for one vagueness that caused the *mplayer could not be found* error) and have also made sure there's no spaces in pathnames (except Application Support, but i dont dare change that)...

Listen, I've read the read me file. I downloaded mpeg2enc. It looks like a text file to me too. Tried to run it thru Stuffit Expander, no difference. I got the same error message.

Frankly, it doesn't matter how good it works, if it is so complicated to set up.

Worked fine for me....if you follow the instructions, download the files that they tell you to and put them in the folder that they tell you to then it will work. The mpeg2enc file will look like a text doc...just put it where they tell you to. This app couldn't be any easier to use...if you read.

Are you rude, or just illiterate. Obviously there's some problem here that is not handled by the Readme, several of us report having followed it's instructions EXACTLY (myself included) and still having these problems. So no, reading isn't helping here. Glad it's working fine for you, but it isn't for everyone-- there's some problem that's different on different machines.

Rude? No... I deal with people all day long that have problems with software that is giving them "problems" or "doesn't work". Sometimes people fail to read the instructions properly that's all. I'm just making sure that you understand that the file that "looks like a text file" isn't just a text file. Maybe you are putting the files in the wrong Library...?

Nope. The problem I keep running into, even when i set up mplayer to do static compiling, there are no config files, so the program falls back on hardcoded config, which produces bad results.

Reading config file /usr/local/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf: No such file or directory
Reading config file /Users/myname/.mplayer/config
Reading /Users/myname/.mplayer/codecs.conf: can't open '/Users/myname/.mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
Reading /usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf: can't open '/usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
Using built-in default codecs.conf
font: can't open file: /Users/myname/.mplayer/font/font.desc
font: can't open file: /usr/local/share/mplayer/font/font.desc
Using usleep() timing
Can't open input config file /Users/myname/.mplayer/input.conf : No such file or directory
Can't open input config file /usr/local/etc/mplayer/input.conf : No such file or directory
Falling back on default (hardcoded) input config

I'd love to know where those config files are. I can do a quick cp to put the font.desc file where it wants it, but the config files do not exist in any location i've managed to track down--

if i can find them, i'll post a fix-- meanwhile can someone be contacting the developer about this?

I have been using 42 for a couple of days. Works great for me. I have read a lot about it from the author on other forums. The error messages about not finding the config files are normal and is a glitch in the software. It works fine even with that error message. I understand this is being addressed in future releases. A lot more info including alternative methods of installing the components using the terminal can be found on the VCDhelp forum.

I just started to convert "the bourne identity" into divx using this prog. Does anyone know how long the conversion process takes? How will I know when it is done?

Thanks

Ah, very good then-- i was wondering if the hard-coded config was OK. What if i can't get a sample movie tho? i'm hesitant to spend the time ripping it, tho it might just work after all :)

thx again--

WooHoo! This thing is awesome!

The 1 minute test clip was perfect, and right now it's encoding my Boondock Saints DVD to SVCD. All is well... encoding continues...

here's a q for you guys....

I'm trying to build an awesome demo composed of several (about 1 1/2 hours worth) video clips with quality dolby 5.1....matrix....apollo 13 etc...my question is.....How do I take these clips from DVD to the computer , ...edit them into scenes....and then create my own DVD...still keeping video quality and 5.1 sound? Is this possible? I'm trying to come up with a great Surround Sound Demo Disc and have figured out this much....

1.) I can rip DVD SOUND AND VIDEO to disc using DVDExtractor....(very simple by the way...
2.) Then use DVD Studio Pro to create the DVD File....

Problem so far...Most DVD's Keep Movie as one track so Im stuck with the full movie...ie (THX logo with sound could (hypothetically) be ripped and then put into DVD studio pro) but I only need short scenes from the movie not the full track...

From there, how do I actually create the DVD? is there an option in dvd studio pro? or do I need to take it to toast?

And what is the answer to editing while keeping the quality?

please help...anyone?

From DVD SP, you build the movie and then take that into toast as a DVD and burn IIRC.

I am a fairly new at creating DVD's, but I thought there was an issue wtih Dolby 5.1 on the Mac? Is 5.1 preserved in DVD SP even thought Macs can't play 5.1?

Music DVD -> mp3 files

Is there a way to take a music DVD (live concert) and transfer the songs into mp3s? Sounds like this program puts sound into mp3, but I'd need to strip out the video and make each song separate (possibly not that hard since each song corresponds to a chapter on the DVD).

mpeg2enc solution

To all people who have had trouble with mpeg2enc not being recognised, I had the same problem, and have found a solution.

When you download the file (I used Safari) it is saved as mpeg2enc.txt. If you use the finder to delete the ".txt", the Finder doesn't actually delete the suffix, it hides it. The real filename is still mpeg2enc.txt.

To successfully rename the file, you need to select the file and choose "Get Info". From the Get Info dialog, you need to rename the file and make sure that the "hide extension" check box is not selected.

After you have done this, you should have a file name mpeg2enc with a generic icon

This is true; OS X tries to protect you from yourself, since it relies on those extensions... but it can be annoying.

Can anyone tell me how to delete a file called "stream.yuv" that 42 left on my desk top? Anytime I click on it to use "get info" or to drag it to the trash, my Mac freezes instantly.

The file was produced as a result of trying to use 42 (which, incidently, didn't work).

Thanks

So far it's working perfectly for me. I selected a near DVD DivX, after a couple of mins it automatically launched the test clip which looked and sounded fantastic, now it's just carring on with the rest of it. Very nice, very simple, very Mac ;)

Now my turn. I tried selecting two different DVDs, but the white space (where there is a message displaying the DVD being unmounted etc.) under the More option is always blank. When I click on Start the processes finishes a minute later, with no test clip or anything. All that is left is a message displaying "choose Quit from the forty-two menu" or something similar.

How do I get the different audio and video files in that white area? I've tried different DivX files and VCD with the newest version of forty-two on my Cube 500 (DVD model) with mplayer and Mencoder in the Application support, as well as the mpeg2enc file (still opens in Textedit by default and has text lines displayed for the icon).

VOB files or VIDEO_TS folder

Does anyone know how to get forty-two to process directly from VOB files or a VIDEO_TS folder on a hard drive, rather than from the DVD drive?
