I didn't bother contacting them, but I'm sure many have.

Odd. Free DD is still not working after 8 pm EDT Friday! (Maybe if I had 6.0.1?)

Even if you click fresh from the iTMS home it's listed as .99.

(Message is now back to "Cart's contents have changed." Followed by a note I've seen a few times: "There was an error in the Music Store. Please try again later.")

You'd think one file would be easy to fix, even if they underlying cause that makes this happen so often is trickier.

(EDIT: I did send a message, FWIW.)

Excellent find. Also if you notice that there is also a concerts button you can click and get 30 additional tracks.. 100 Free songs at one pop. Ultra cool

They aren't DRMed either.

Looks like they may have more stuff too.

Stanford on iTunes

News Link

This could become huge if more universities take part. Remember how iPods were being used to store lectures and class materials? Now you could get them from iTunes.

Has anyone gotten the Haley Westenra DD to work? I wonder if the issue is universal or not?

Still can't be downloaded as of Sunday night. One more day and then it will be gone anyway--which adds some humor to the following message I got back from Apple :)

Thank you for contacting the iTunes Music Store.

We take the quality of our products very seriously and we will be investigating the issue you reported in depth.

Please do not attempt to download this title again within the next two weeks. This will give us time to resolve the issue with the title or remove it if we need to.

We hope that you continue to enjoy purchasing music from the iTunes Music Store.

Beat me to the punch. I had already cut the exact same thing out of my e-mail and was gonna post.. So I think it is safe to say that this is a universal issue.

Official answer from Apple

The "FREE Discovery Download" for this week still bears a $0.99 price
tag. Will this be corrected before next week's update?

Thank you for contacting the iTunes Music Store.

Sorry about the completely inaccurate and off-topic reply to your email.

And we're also sorry you have been unable to get this week's free download. This is an error on our end, and we are actively working on correcting the problem. We do not know when, or if, this song will be available to be downloaded for free. Thank you for your time and patience.

Sincerely,

The iTunes Music Store team

New songs for the week - the Discovery Download appears to still be catalogued incorrectly in the store because currently it's listed as $0.99 on the main link from the front page, but the direct link shows it as free.

Hmm, it's working for me now... Theodis Ealey shows as 'Free.' :D They must have received countless 'angry' emails. Haha.

The Hayley Westenra DD still won't work, and now it may never, although I'll keep "trying again later" as the message states.

But I do NOT think it's universal: there would be more complaints in this thread, and some of the reviews mention that they tried the free download. So I think only a few of us were blocked from the DD. But if someone posts that they DID get it, that would answer that.

darien - at least that message actually makes SENSE for the issue :)

You can gift the free songs by going to the album page. Could someone with iTunes 6 please send a gift of one of the free songs to betbest1 AT hotmail DOT com so I can get an iTMS account without a credit card or a gift certificate?

EDIT: Interesting...almost all iTunes store links are on phobos.apple.com and the Stanford link is on deimos.apple.com. (For those who do not know astronomy, those are the names of the two moons of the planet Mars.)

Some past free downloads aren't available anymore

Is it unusual for previous free downloads to disappear from the store? For instance, the free version of "Telescope Eyes" by Eisley disappeared, along with the entire EP it was on, "Laughing City."

And Ellie Lawson, who had a free track one week called "Gotta Get Up From Here," has disappeared entirely.

I thought one of the cool things about the iTMS is that, without the physical contraints of shelf space, they can let songs just sit on their servers. Guess that's not always true...

EDIT: Never mind. I figured out that the artists (and their record labels) can pull their songs off of iTMS. In the case of Ellie Lawson, she's exclusive to Barnes & Noble stores. Bizarre.

Free Songs from Stanford

There are a lot of free songs and parts of audiobooks I believe from Stanford on Itunes. Here is the URL. http://itunes.stanford.edu/. Hopefully some of these songs or lecture you will like. There are a lot of them and from what I have seen, they are all free.

That's pretty cool. The nice thing is that the music is varied - there is something that fits every taste. Plus the lectures...WOW! This is all the more meaningful coming from someone who doesn't even like Stanford.

Even more bizzare is that while all of her music is gone from itms her video for 'Gotta Get Up from Here" is still available?? I wonder in B&N is aware of this...

Just had an email from The Times offering four more downloads.
They are:
Stereophonics - Devil (Live from Glasgow)
Grandaddy - Pull the Curtains
Raghav - Let's Work It Out (featuring Jahaziel)
Ane Brun - Song No. 6 (featuring Ron Sexsmith)

What I want to see more of is those free "sampler" tracks where bits of different songs are stitched together to make one track that's a sneak peak at a whole album, usually with a little talking added to the beginning. I like those.*

That's too bad! I hope that changes. I liked the other "Nu" Volvo freebies.

Oddly enough, right now it looks like the Vol. 2 and Vol. 4 songs are still free... but not 1, 3, or 5. (Or 6. Yet?)

* NOT.

I can't find that anyone else has done this yet so:
Free iTunes from Australian iTMS (NOTE: these are only the Single of the Week, updates every Tuesday)

1. Week of 26 Oct: Youth Group - Shadowland - Alternative

2. Week of 1 Nov: Kisschasy - This Bed - Rock

3. Week of 8 Nov: The White Room - Enemies Closer - Rock (Warning: Explicit lyrics)

4. Week of 15 Nov: Wolfmother - Woman - Rock

5. Week of 22 Nov: Savage - Swing (Album Version) - Hip Hop / Rap (Warning: Explicit lyrics)

6. Week of 29 Nov: Phrase featuring Daniel Merriweather - Catch Phrase - Hip Hop / Rap

7. Week of 5 Dec: British India - Roses - Alternative

8. Week of 12 Dec: The Hampdens - Hype (V.2) - Pop

9. Week of 19 Dec: Gyroscope - Fast Girl - Rock
NOTE: even though it's listed as the free single of the week, I've yet to actually see it have the price as FREE

Apple must find the free weekly iTunes program to be a successful way to drum up business for the store, because the program is still going as we approach the end of 2005. This year's collection (163 songs and counting) now tops 800MB!
