Oooh, just realized there is a(nother) bug in Volition's original control config code. You can't use the mouse to set an axis, you have to use the joystick. Obviously this is a rather large problem if you don't have a joystick attached to the system. If you have a joystick then use it to set the axis, it will apply to the mouse as well. Is this the problem you are seeing or is it something else?

The bug is now fixed but it will only be in CVS builds which I don't recommend right now. If you don't have, and can't get, a joystick then let me know and I'll get you a special (non-CVS) build with the fix in it.

so is this easyily installable yet? I dont have VPC

It was originally released in '99. But of course the point of FS2_Open is to push it far beyond that original release.

We are talking about going from this:

and this:
http://www.freespace2.com/picview.cfm?screen=vol2-7.jpg

to this:
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/deimos.png
and this:
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/perseusred.png
and this:
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/derelict/hercs.jpg
and this:
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/derelict/levcloseup.jpg
and this:
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/derelict/hisubspace.png

And you don't get there with "Voodoo 2 or above" as the video requirements. :)

Yeah I kow, I've been reloading the games section about every 3 minutes to find out the answer to that question.

I must be stupid not to mention...

...that you can find the installtion instructions here!

http://s7.invisionfree.com/Apple_Corps/index.php?showtopic=263&st=0

Just look somewhere at the middle of the page, the guy gives specific instructions on how to install the game in OS X.

Also, I want to mention that you can download the hi-res artwork and other media files which add lightmaps and better sounds to the game in the official SCP website...

So grab them and alter the FS2 experience!

I'm as confused as you guys are, but I did manage to get somewhere.

After examining the syntax in terminal, I figured out how to extract the files from data1.cab on the first disk image using unshield. Its actually not that hard. Here are some step by step instructions if anyone is interested:

First startup terminal

then copy the directory of the unshield file (apple C) and paste it (apple V) into terminal.

Type x into terminal, then space. So at this point you should have a directory, and the letter x in terminal with a space before and after the x.

Then go and do the same copy-paste to the data1.cab file. The final command should look something like this:

/Users/erendiox/Desktop/Freespace2Folder/unshield-bin/unshield x /Volumes/Freespace2_1/data1.cab

or basically directory x directory

Terminal will then proceed to extract the files using unshield. The files ended up in my home folder so I assume it would do the same to everyone else. Trouble is, even after taking the vp files that were extracted and putting them together with the vp files and the MVE files from the other disk images, nothing seems to work! :(

Sorry I can't help any firther. I just figured i'd let you all know what i'd figured out so far. If I manage to get anything else figured out i'll be sure to let you all know.

Edit: Ah. GUI is good :p. Going to try those instructions.

I forgot to mention that in the link for the instructions I gave you, THERE IS A PROGRAM THAT DOES THE SAME THING AS UNSHIELD but with a GUI! (sorry for the caps, I wanted everybody to notice it!).

It's called File Juicer

That should help you extract the files from these .cab files. I used this program to install my copy of FS2. then just follow the instructions from the forum link I gave you...

No need for unshield, File Juicer has a comprehensive GUI.

The MVEs won't play on OS X.

For the movies, http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/

Anyway, it was pretty easy to get working. Just extract the cab file, and then grab all the .vp files off all the discs, and put all the files together in one directory, with the fs2_open executable, and it should run (without movies, until you download them from the link)

After G said:

MVE is the only movie supported actually, it can't play the AVI versions. MVEs will work only on the Linux and OS X versions of FS2_Open right now. The only trick to getting MVE working is to put them in "data/movies" and have the filenames lowercase.

It's been reported that the intro movie will play but be black however I think this is fixed if you use the MediaVPs (at least mv_core.vp) since it works ok for me in that configuration. A proper fix for that will show up in public builds soon.

AVI support is coming but not fully working yet since the new code is meant to be used on all platforms and replace the current Windows only movie code.

And per the instructions on the link that Soulstorm provided I just wanted to mention that you don't have to create a full set of directories. If you want to use movies then you just have to create "data/movies" and the rest will be created automatically as needed by the game. Also the "FPS at 120 = slowdown" bug was fixed in the official version so you can ignore that. (The build linked in that post is not official and not supported by anyone except the person that made it).

hey,

just wondering if anyone got this to work with a G3. I've followed all the instructions but the app stil wont start. I have a iBook 700mhz g3 with 16megs fo vram. Is my laptop just too old to run it?

After G said:

They will. Just name them to lowercase and they're fine. I play them with no problem.

It's the .avi's that cannot be played. The original game files will play without problem.

As for the black intro screen that mtr is talking about, just download the media.vp enhancements and it will be fine.

Yep, that's too old to play FS2_Open. You do still have the option of using the icculus.org version of Freespace 2 (download from http://www.tigital.com) if you want. It doesn't have all of the cool features for supporting mods or the enhanced graphics capabilities that FS2_Open has, it's just a port of the original Windows release to OS X, but it should run on your hardware.

So because Im computer illiterate and such Im just wondering if there is anyway that this is going to become one of those things that you just download and install without going through all of this weird funky stuff for which my understanding is something slightly less than zero.

If not would anyone mind posting the Installing Freespace Two for idiots guide on here :D

Ok i got freespace 2 to work on my mac with the app file that was given in soulstorms instructions. however when I attempt to open the game with the FS2_open files for the mac the game doesnt open. i checked the fs2_open file inside when i opened the package and it says.
"FS2_Open; exit
dyld: Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/SDL.framework/Versions/A/SDL
Referenced from: /Games/Freespace2/FS2_Open-debug.app/Contents/MacOS/FS2_Open
Reason: image not found
Trace/BPT trap
logout
[Process completed]"
any ideas why it wont work?
I have mac os tiger v10.4.2 with a 1.8ghz Power pc g5 and 1.24 gigs of ram
and a 64mb Nvidia Graphics card so with thoes specifications it should work right?

I'm working on an installer which will just be point and click and simple to use. I'm not making as much progress as I thought though. But that's probably because I'm making an installer that works on every platform supported by the game. If I don't make serious progress tonight, I'll go ahead and release a script that will do all of the work and you'll just have to do what it tells you.

Crap! Someone said it but I didn't believe them, I forgot to include SDL inside the APP! The original 3.6.7 release had it but then I updated it and forgot the second time.

Oh well, guess I'll have to update the packages with SDL included. In the meantime you can just download http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.9.dmg and then mount it and drag "SDL.framework" into "/Library/Frameworks/". That should fix the problem.

I installed it using VPC and i installed the SDL thing. But when i start FS2 open it does run but the screen goes black and it crash.... Btw my freespace folder is 572,2 MB big. Can anyone help?

Edit: I tried to open data1.cab with and all i get is 1 jpg file and many txt files...

I still have this game for Windows, and I'd love to play it on my Mac, but the installation instructions are pretty scattered.

I download the .iso AND the disc#.rars from the first two links in the first post? Then the .dmg from the third?

Finally got mine installed. Man, this program CRASHES all of the time! I usually only get one level in before the whole thing shuts down. :(

Yeah, I think I have the same. Makes me wonder if I screwed up installation. I think when we get the GUI installer I will start over just to be safe.

BTW: Despite my problems, this game is lots of fun! I am having a blast. :D

I updated the original packages to include SDL so just download it again and you should be fine (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/releases/FS2_Open-3.6.7.dmg).

That usually happens when you run the game without the data files in the same directory. Make sure that you have the .vp files in the same directory as the app and that the .vp files are all lower case. If that doesn't help then please run "FS2_Open-debug" and after it crashes post the last 15 lines of ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/fs2_open.log (with "~" being your home directory).

Unfortunately the German and QWERTY keyboard layouts are the only ones that work properly. The game doesn't really lend itself that well to supporting different layouts but I'll make sure that's on my todo list for the future.

As far as the game looking like retail, it's supposed to do that. By default it's setup to act like the retail version. If you install the MediaVPs and use the proper cmdline options (in the README file) then all of the extra graphics features and hi-poly models will get used. I'll post instructions on how to get and use the MediaVPs with the installation info. It's not difficult but they are tailored to the Windows crowd and if you are new to this whole thing then it's all pretty confusing at first.

I'll post a link to detailed, step-by-step instructions in 5-6 hours which will have all of the links to the files, installation instructions from the orginal discs and a FAQ.

I handle all cross-platform work for SCP and TBP. So basically, yes. The OS X port of FS2_Open was originally based on work done by tigital for the icculus.org version. Only one section of code is actually the same as what tigital did now but he still gets credit for doing it in the first place.

It's pretty stable most of the time actually. That's not to say that there aren't issues of course. Post your crash log (~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/FS2_Open.crash.log) some where that I can look at it and I'll see if I can't figure out what the problem is.

Well, ive been playing for a while now - and im loving it. I've tried to install the high res-vp packages (put them in my freespace game folder next to the binary - created a (HOME)/Lib/FS2_OPEN/data/cmdline_fso.cfg with ' -glow -spec -jpgtga -pcx32 -ambient_factor -rlm -loadonlyused -fps ' in it) However i dont think they are working.. the game looks great but im not getting a 'fps' counter and the models looks the same .. so im probably doing somethign wrong ;)

It is nice playing a game at 1280x1024 on my powerbook though :D

thanks again for porting this game
R

I'll be having a go with this tonight as I found my FS2 game disks yesterday. Its still in my top 5 games of all time, and the ability to play it on my PB has got me all excited? Is widescreen supported - or am I just asking too much?
