Unavoidable: Install a hard drive and the GTX 560 into the Mac Pro.

The GTX 560 is supported from OS X 10.7.3 and above: Install OS X Lion or higher from USB-Stick, or install OS X Snow Leopard from DVD, and upgrade to a higher OS via App Store.

Does anyone know if an old PC Nvidia 8800GTS 640 MB is still supported by the OS X or especially Nvidia web drivers in OS X Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite?

Nvidia 8800 series cards were the first with PCI E 2.0 support, and i have an old one laying around.

Since I'm not doing anything that requires much GPU these days, I've gone back to the stock ATI 5770.

Is there any special way that all the Nvidia software bits need to be removed?

^^^^Wow, this thread is really starting to contain posts that are really not apropos to this thread. This is one of them. it should have been a stand-alone thread asking the question.

Anyway the answer to your question is to use a program like AppCleaner or AppDelete. When you throw the main part of a program away, AppDelete or AppCleaner will give you a list of associated files and the option to keep or throw away those associated files.

Removing Nvidia software is off topic for a FAQ thread about Nvidia graphics cards? Sorry your highness..

Should I have gone into detail about how everything had gone to hell since the last significant software update, and about how going back to the ATI card has cured all of it?

One of my Mac Pro 2008 3,1 systems has a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB & is using the NVIDIA web driver in Yosemite.

Do you realize that the way OS X has worked for EVER is to have drivers for everything Apple wants drivers for always in the OS?

So even after you remove Web Driver the regular OS X Nvidia driver for every card from 8800GTS 320 to GTX480 to Quadro 5600 to Quadro 4000...etc. They are all there all of the time.

In short, a total and complete waste of time. Aside from which, the way OS X works if there isn't a device that matches to the kexts, they don't load in the first place.

A MAcbook Air running 10.7.5 has drivers for a Nvidia Tesla card. Removing them would be silly.

A MBP running 10.8.5 has drivers for a GTX680, removing them would be silly.

Millions of Macs out in the wild are full of drivers for all of the cards made in last 5 years, but since they never load in machines where the card isn't present, they are of no matter and Apple keeps including them in every OS update. And nobody has any trouble with them.

Thanks for that. Yeah the web driver bit, plus the stuff in the Control Panel was what I was concerned with. I add and remove normal software all the time, but wasn't sure about this stuff.

Not to mention that my MP has been an unstable POS for the past 3 weeks or so, so I'm all tuned into getting rid of unnecessary stuff at this point in time.

Various GTX cards

I have a mac pro 4.1 with Yosemite...

I tried several cards, gtx 960, gtx 740...and others.

I finally decided to install bootcamp, when I did I purchased a GTX 750i, from EVGA, it does not require any extra power since its a mini card. Its fast and quite but only works under windows. I'm okay with this since most programs I use utilize windows as well, but would like to get to run mac os/x...any experience out there?

----------

I have the same machine turned it into a window machine with bootcamp with GTX 750 Ti, works like a charm but no mac any longer. Its a very quiet windows machine.

Mac Pro 4.1 Early 2009 2x Quad Core 2.26.

I managed to Install Asus GTX 960 to Yosemite without any major problems. I have old GT 120 in slot 1 and new in slot 2. used 1 6 pin cable for extra power.

Only problem seems be that Safari seems to be flickering oddly on a screen which is attached to GT 120. Other screen works fine. Problematic screen is 24" Apple LED Cinema Display. Any ideas how to fix that?

GTX 970 & 750 work great!

I have a Mac Pro 4,1 with a GTX 970, GTX 750, and a GT 120 all working great under Yosemite. The key has been using the nvidia web drivers. With a Yosemite update, I've had to have only the Gt 120 installed, then I would select the nvidia web drivers, and reinstall my 970 & 750. Works great with cuda also!

Geforce 740-Mavericks

Thanks for the thread. It's been a long but educational read.

Will have a MP 3,1 soon. It comes with Radeon HD 2600 XT.

Plan on installing Mavericks 1st thing. I have a Geforce 740 I have used without issue in a hack before. Will this card work in Mavericks? I will be doing the dual display thing. It requires no extra power connections & I like that.

Read & searched this forum for signs someone has tried/is using one of these 740's & found no mention. Can someone please tell me if they've used one or know of someone who has in Mavericks?

Peace :)

I just swapped out my GTX570 1.25gb with GTX660ti 3gb version with all latest systems and Nvidia drivers.I got a black screen when running OPEN CL app Luxmark. It doesn't happen with the 570. Anyone experience this?
My card requires an 8 pin and 6 pin, but I am running 2x6 pin as the card only has a TDP of 150w much lower than the 570.
Bit of a loss as to what the problem could be? it's a Mac Pro 5,1 running Xeon 3.2 and 12gb Ram.
In games the 660ti seems to stutter more than the 570 as well.

660 is a significant downgrade from a 570 for most cases, especially OpenCl and CUDA.

If the card literally REQUIRES an 8 pin, it won't work without. That said, the ones that have a "sense" pin in the final 2 usually don't work at all if that pin isn't populated.

I thought the extra VRAM (3gb vs 1.25)and significantly more CUDA (1344 vs 480)cores would help, but maybe not.
I realise the VRAM bandwidth is neutered on the 660ti (192 vs 320) as well.
I probably should have worded it better, I'm not sure if it requires an 8 pin as it boots without it (6 pin in its place)
I emailed tech support Galaxy about the 8 pin requirement and didn't receive an answer. I thought it was there for OC purposes. Nearly all other 660ti have 2x6 pin connectors. Guess I will stick my 570 back in, not much diff in games that I can see anyhow. thanks! Stability better than a few more fps anytime!

P.s GTX570 is now working with latest Nvidia Drivers!

Well, if anyone was going to apply the security update from yesterday, DON'T! Maybe it's isolated to my system/card, but I have a MP 5,1 with an EVGA 650ti that now is not working. Neither with the NVidia drivers that now say incompatible, or the stock Apple drivers! I'm not sure what happened, but I had to put my 8800gt (from a 3,1) in just to see a desktop. I know the system boots just fine, because I hear the volume chirp. Is there any way to "downgrade" or am I screwed until Apple or NVidia fix this?

Edit: OK, I just read another thread about this, Kudos to Netkas for the solution. uh... un-kudos to Apple or NVidia for this problem!

Second edit: Figured to repost Netkas' link here too!

Maybe they just updated build number so nvidia driver stopped working.

There was some beta driver for 10.10.2 for all 14C releases.

install this driver before(or after security update)http://us.download.nvidia.com/dZAS8cBUHaT1cUk4pr4NBgqTMH8PbHXC/WebDriver-343.02.02b04.pkg

or wait for updated driver

Nvidia GT 740 works!

Mavericks 10.9.5. Put the card in slot 2 of my MP 3,1. Not using web drivers. Works great. HDMI works perfectly as well.

Hope someone finds this useful :)

Hi all,

So, if I understand this correctly, I can get a GTX 970 and put it in Slot 1, and move my existing GT 120 to Slot 3/4, and I should still get the boot screen and be able to take advantage of the power of the GTX 970?

Will the monitor have to be hooked up to the GT 120, or can it be connected to the GTX 970?

Thanks in advance! :D

Macvidcards GTX 980 mac

Hi,

I recieved my GTX 980-4Go macvidcards yesterday.
Mac Pro 5.1 • 3,46Ghz 12 cores • 64Gb Ram
Tried Last cuda driver 6.5.46 under Yosemite 10.10.2, white screen
Have crashed two hard disk.
Seems the last cuda retired by Nvidia, link didn't worked anymore.

I've bought it for my philips 40''.

So i returned to my ATI HD 5870 with 10.8.5
Strangely I installed 313.01.03f02 web driver and tried to connect the 40''
?! it work, really. I couldn't believed it.
I have 3840 x 2160 @30hz (60Hz in NSTC) with display port.
It's really a surprise because i tested a lot of time with a lot of driver for Mountain Lion but nothing.

Hope Nvidia give us a driver for the GTX 980 and Apple give us the 60Hz soon.
