Are you getting a boot screen from your GTX 750 Ti? I ask because it seems like graphics card manufacturers might have transitioned from BIOS to uEFI, which should allow it to show a boot screen on a Mac.

You are confusing Mac EFI with UEFI. Like Portugese and Spanish, similar but not.

We have some explanation on our blog if you are curious.

We will finally be rolling out EFI 750Tis. Been promising for months, finally ordered a few.

Oh. I thought they were similar and interoperable. Thanks for setting me straight on that. As long as the graphics card works on my MacBook Pro without having to do any flashing, that's fine. I'll just have to get the GeForce drivers from Nvidia. That's easy enough.

I guess you mean as an eGPU?

The good news is that TB uses PCIE drivers, so you just need to mod 3 files.

The bad news is that the Apple/Intel TB blockade has made the use of eGPUs on recent Macs much more complicated.

In fact, flashing cards with a new eEFI can solve some of these issues. TB1 macs were largely exempt, just more recent TB2 ones with issues. My thread on this at Tech Inferno is now a sticky.

How are you powering the card?

Each card (the 750TI and the 8800GT) has a single 6-pin power socket with 6-pin power cable going to the motherboard. When I had the 5870 in the machine, both of these cables went into the 5870.

Attached is a picture of the two cards in my chassis with the yellow+black cable going to the 8800GT and the all black cable going to the 750TI. When running with just the 750TI, I use the all black cable while the yellow+black cable remains unplugged. The yellow+black cable is not long enough to use in the 750TI since its power socket is on the "top" of the card rather than the "back."

I have no issues using the 750TI even under heavy load in OS X as long as the 8800GT is in the machine (not even a monitor connected to the 8800GT). This suggests to me there isn't a power issue for the 750TI, especially since I can power both cards seemingly without issue.

With only the 750TI in the machine, it won't boot to the desktop. I hear the chime, attempt to login at the black screen, but I don't get any feedback from the system that the login was successful (usually I see my mouse's LED flash when I login successfully at the black screen with 750TI+8800GT or with the old 5870). I've tried to remote login to the machine but cannot get a connection; I assume the network connection is available at this point if it's not booting successfully.

In the attached picture I'm running the 750TI in the slot 3 and the 8800GT in slot 1. I've tried the reverse and get the same results. I've tried only the 750TI in both slot 1 and slot 3 with the same results.

I'm almost positive that your machine isn't making it to the login screen. I just tested on my 970 & Mac Pro 1,1 and while I don't get the initial boot screen (as expected), I do get video on the login screen fine.

Here are some things I would try:

1. Enable auto login
2. Check sudo nvram boot-args to make sure you don't have something weird in there.
3. Check to see if you are getting video on either the HDMI or DP ports on the 750ti
4. Triple check that the card is seated properly when installed in slot 1 and all power connections are secure.
5. Be patient during boot

If none of that solved it I would install a fresh copy of 10.10.3 & nvidia web drivers to a spare drive and see if it boots to rule out software problems

Has anyone here used a GTX 570 with an HDMI monitor?

I've been happily using my 570 (MSI Twin Frozr II, 1.28 GB) in my 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 with an older DVI monitor for years. Using OS X's 10.10.3 drivers (10.2.7 310.41.25f01), both DVI ports are active...I've never tested the mini HDMI.

Today I received a new 2560x1440 monitor with HDMI inputs (no DVI). I have on hand a DL-DVI to HDMI adapter, and was able to get this new monitor to function in Bootcamp/Win7. Unfortunately, the monitor goes into Power Save mode when in OS X, regardless of configuration (DVI 1 & 2, either single or dual monitor).

It would seem that the OSX driver doesn't like the DL-DVI to HDMI adapter. The two options I can think of are to (a) try the Nvidia web drivers, or (b) buy a mini HDMI to HDMI cable and stick with the OS X drivers. I've had some black screen issues with the web drivers so I'm hesitant to try (a), and I've yet to hear someone use the HDMI mini output successfully. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, Are you sure that the display doesn't have a DP in? HDMI was limited to 1920x1080 until just recently. DP on the other hand has been capable of 2560x1440 for some time now.

Which display is it?

Which display is it?

It's a Dell Ultrasharp U2715H. It has both a DP and mini DP input. Since HDMI v1.3, 2560x1440 should be supported. I was able to get something like 2048 resolution in Windows 7, which I've read can be switched to 2560 by manually editing some config files in Windows. So I think 2560x1440 is possible between the 570 and U2715H via DL-DVI-HDMI...perhaps I should play around myself in Windows to confirm.

Update:
Hooking up both monitors via DVI, going into OS X's display setting, and checking "mirror" shows a second "DELL 24707WFP" monitor. The default is 2560x1440, which doesn't work. Switching to 2048x1152 does work, yet it's improperly scaled with black bars on the side.

Update 2:
I just checked that the HDMI cable and adapter I'm borrowing likely predates HDMI v1.3...I'll test that then update this post. So really the only point relevant to this thread is the failure to auto-select a non-native resolution when the native res doesn't work. All of which is moot if I can get native res working. Sorry for the tangent.

I have the exact same card in my Mac Pro 3,1. The Nvidia web drivers will be of no use to you as they long ago stopped working properly with the GTX570 in that only one monitor output at a time will work i.e. all ports work but only one at a time.

Just the GTX 570, or should the web drivers be avoided with all Nvidia graphics cards?

It would make no sense if Nvidia produced drivers for all their cards that didn't work correctly. AFAIK driving multiple monitors does work on newer Nvidia cards like the GTX680. In fact newer cards will not work without the Nvidia web drivers.

I don't know what specific advantage the Nvidia web drivers would have for the GTX570 as when the older versions did work there was no noticeable difference in function or performance compared to the OS X native drivers. The GTX570 is still a very decently performing card especially for CUDA applications where it's similar performance to a GTX680. The downside is it chucks out more heat & needs noisier fans to cool it but it's great value used.

Technical specifications that matter at 2D applications

I have an 8800GT and as it fails, I 've been searching for a new card to replace it.
I don't play 3D games so I want a card for desktop apps like Firefox, a bit video editing with imovie, Photo (Yosemite 10.10.3) and some video converting with Handbreak.
So I am looking and comparing my 8800GT specifications at this link http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GT-8800-Mac-vs-GeForce-GT-740A

At this page there are some comperative features.
Which of them matters in my uses and I should look for, to have better performance than 8800GT? At Yosemite 10.x.x 8800GT is a bit slow, even when it animates opening windows...

Can't answer your questions til we know which machine you have, what displays you have or are likely to get, what's OS and apps you run, etc.

Details or any suggestions are just wild guesses.

Oh yes, are bootscreens important or is fumbling in the dark OK with you?

RE: NVidia WebDriver mod - Many, Many, Many Thanks!

Asgorath,
I can't put into words how much appreciated and informative your post and the use of terminal to allow the webdriver from NVidia to be installed on my Mac Pro 2.1 machine. You gave me my machine back!. I installed a new GeForce GTX 960 in it and WOW what a difference from the old card. Updated to Yosemite and truly without your help would still be mired in the modification of the .pkg file. I am not a programmer (my mind is a bit old and tired to learn all the tricks of the trade) but I do try and am not afraid to try to learn. I am up in years but still enjoy messing with these things. Again, thank you for your kindness in sharing your knowledge with others - may good things happen for you!

I have posted them all except, I am using a Syncmaster P2370 at 1920x1080 and a ViewSonic VP191s at 1280x1024 from the dvi ports.
MP 3.1 , 2x2.8GHz, 6GB RAM OSX 10.10.3
Bootscreens are not important, as I plan to keep 8800GT as a spare part for when it's necessary...!

Update 3:
It appears that the mini HDMI output on the MSI Twin Frozr II GTX570 (the version with 2 DVI & 1 mini HDMI outs) is not fully compliant with HDMI >v1.3. I believe the stock card supports v1.4, but I've heard of certain retail versions being arbitrarily limited to lower bandwidths. I've contacted MSI support for confirmation.

I'm connecting my Dell U2715H HDMI v1.4 input to the GTX570 using an Amazon Basics High Speed HDMi-miniHDMI cable...both of which are capable of 2560x1440 @60 Hz resolution.

In both Windows 7 & Yosemite, I'm unable to stably get 2560x1440 @ 60Hz. Best I can do is 2560x1440 @ 48Hz in Win7 and 2560x1440 @42Hz in Yosemite (via SwitchResX).

Are there any reports of different retail versions of the GTX570 outputting 2560x1440 @ 60Hz over HDMI?

I've been sticking with the OS X drivers in Yosemite. I haven't recently tried the web drivers since I'm experiencing the same issue in Windows with NVIDIA's drivers (I forget which version).

Okay. I actually wasn't referring to the web drivers. I meant Nvidia's GeForce drivers, though I checked and it doesn't look like they have the Mac drivers for your graphics card.

Where do you find the Beta webdrivers? The NVidia site does not show any results when I try to search for them.
