I will blame the iphone for the shift of attention on their computer line. This is a joke. I have had 2 imacs sent to me, I paid 2600 for this computer and both have been defected.

I know most of you will say this is rare, but that is not true at all. Most of these computers have the yellow tint, most of these computer have the backlight bleed (ips glow), most of them have the grey band running across the bottom.

I just returned my first imac (the new 2010 one), because of the yellow tint, grey band, back light glow and received a new one with dust particles, and 3 pieces of hair underneath the glass, backlight bleed and the dog whistle noise. Are you kidding me? This computer is almost $3,000, how is the quality assurance this bad?

The first argument from people will be "then don't buy an imac". Easier said then done, when all of your programs are for apple, and you have used a mac operating system your whole life, you don't have many choices. I want a desktop with an i7 processor, and I can't afford a mac pro with a monitor. So because apple is consistently sending out defected imacs, I have to get a PC, keep calling tech support and sending my computer back, or settle for a product that is defected. No it's no my eyes, these problems are defects...not normal.

The second argument will be that "since this is a mac forum, the problem is exposed more". Once again this is not true. Most people just turn on their computer with the stock desktop wallpaper and don't notice these problems. If you look at thread after thread, on this forum and others you will notice how bad the problem is. One call to apple support and you can hear how used to these phone calls apple support is. Today when I called apple, the tech support agent was finishing my sentences about the problems before I even got to finish, because he knew what they were already.

The third argument is that these problems are normal. No they are not. Some one decided to write an article about how ips glow or back light bleed is normal, and others followed. The argument "my t.v has it as well!" doesn't work, that means your t.v is defected as well. Back light bleed and/or glow on these computers is partially due to the border of the screen having a small gap between it, causing light to pass through. This is mostly (not always) a problem on BTO iMacs because the screen is removed and put back on for the 2nd time, causing the corners to sometimes have a small gap letting light pass through. Just because it is LED backlit, does not mean that light won't bleed through on the corners.

There simply is no excuse for this, but the problem is apple is so focused on the iPad and iPhone, that it seems that their computer line is 3rd in importance now. People have made such a big deal about the iphone which is 200 bucks, and its antenna issue. The antenna issue is solved with a case. The iphone is 200 dollars. The imac is almost 12 times the price of 1 single iphone. The only fix for these imac issues is just to pretend it doesn't exist. I really want one of these, and yes I can just settle for one and I can just get used to the yellow tint, grey band, back light bleed, and high pitched noise. But I was raised that if you work hard, you deserve good things. I have worked my ass off to get the money for this iMac... and now because of either quality control or bad build quality, I am going through way more hassle then I should to get one that is good. At this point my fingers are just crossed that my 3rd one is good.

P.S. If you are going to tell me to read the Gizmodo article about how the yellow tint happens after apple makes the computer and its the shippers fault, I don't buy it. Even if this is true, Apple should build these computers so that they can make the standard shipping stage and be OK. That is the whole point, if they can't make it to the hands of their customers and be in good condition, then they are not building them well.

I feel your pain - I just had to return mine for the same reasons ( minus the grey band). I am just crossing my fingers. If the exchange is no good I may take mine to an Apple store and try to get them to exchange for one that can be verified not to have yellow tint or dog whistle. At least I didn't have to phone India abd cut through red tape though...

I hear you. I am waiting on iMac #2 and if it has issues like my first one I will be done with the iMac and Macs in general. I was ready to make the switch from PC's, but it may not be in the cards.

Before anyone says that a Mac Pro is an option, well... no it is not. The cost of that machine with a new display is at least 50% higher than the iMac. Also, I can build a Windows machine that is comparable to an iMac for at least half as much. I have no problem running a 64bit Windows machine for my Photoshop and Lightroom needs.

If you don't want an iMac....don't buy one...if you bought one and you don't like it.....bring it back!

I wrote 8 paragraphs explaining my frustration with as much detail and info as I could, to try and avoid your type of comment. Little did I know it would come in the 2nd post. Please re-read, if you don't understand after that, well then I don't know what to say.

Crevice, i agree with you. Im too saved up for my i7 and dissapointed with the screen. Waiting for 1st replacement. I wonder how many ppl are going thru this process?

Can't justify mac pro. Would you beleive I'm currently considering top of the line 17" antiglare MBP as a desktop machine?? What the hell am i thinking! Dammit

Interesting theory that the problem is happening for i7 cause they take screen off and then re-attach. Explain why more often than not i5'ers say they have no screen probs and ones in apple store look OK

Dude, I was doing the same thing today! I was planning on what to do if my next one was defected as well.

Buy a Mac Pro and a separate monitor. Or better yet, build a Hackintosh. With the new Supreme Court ruling, it is 100% legal. I understand your frustration. I would be pissed too, but at least realize that you get what you get. Either deal with it, or move on to something else. The standard has already been lowered.

As far as the iPhone and iPad being the focus of Apple's energy....you are right. Sad, but true. Mobile is the future. The desktop is a dying breed.

Chill out guys, #3 poster was mocking the video Apple played at the antennagate conference.

But yes, I would be POed if any of these happened to my iMac. It's just luck, I guess?

And Apple changing their focus? Sad, but true. A company built upon being different is dedicating themselves to the same 100 million iOS users.

I received a perfect 21.5" 3.2 model yesterday. Its screen is good, its HDD is good, its fan noise is good, its many controls seem to work, etc. etc. Wife & Kids say "its a keeper". Perhaps I'm just lucky? Don't know. But I can vouch that acceptable iMacs are being recieved by some folks.

Can you really blame them though?

I feel the OP's pain. I think it's unacceptable. I am worried for the defects I will come across when I get my new iMac this Friday. I'm in no way justifying Apple for overlooking their desktops, but really, can you blame them for focusing more on their mobile devices?

Just look at their stock. Look at how much more the company is worth. Accordingly, look at how many more desktops and notebook they're selling thanks to the publicity that the iPhone an iPad has brought them. Not to mention, look at how they're changing the future of mobility! I for one thank them for all the attention they're giving their mobile line. It's made my life better and easier since I now have an iPhone, and sure enough this innovation will work it's way to the OS X software, no doubt about it.

I think these few years in between, as the old desktop formula dies away, as Apple gears towards getting the next step of desktop computing ready for us consumers, we need to pay the price of them shifting some focus.

We will get replacements, we will end up with perfect machines, and in a few years time we'll have new computers that can do things that will make our lives and daily computing better.

Should we still get pissed? Of course.

OP, I hope you get your perfect iMac. And while you're at it, I would demand they upgrade it, for free.

Tell them to throw in an SSD.

And if you're really pissed, start a class action. Those are really popular nowadays.

Your post made me incredibly jealous.

Ugh...

I feel your pain. I bought my 27" Corei7 on June 26th. Even though it's not the "super new Corei7 27" at least it has a perfect screen, no banding or yellowing or whistling or whatnot.

That doesn't mean that it's not happening and I've seen evidence that it has. I wonder if the increased marketshare and demand has made QC spotty?

As much as I feel your pain, you are not special. You're not the only one who have problematic iMacs. If you really want to let off some steam, there's already a 5-6 page long thread discussing the problem. 8 paragraphs doesn't entitle you to make a new thread.

Not that this problem is new, but you really have two options. Deal with it and exchange till you get one that's problem-free or get a refund.

Know that, there are a lot of threads discussing possibly how to avoid or at least to lessen the risk of a bad unit.

And the consensus is, don't get a stock iMac.
BTO it, to avoid noisy Seagate HDD. 27" i7 owners have reported Western Digital HDD in theirs, and overall lower screen issues. 21" owners are reporting higher screen issues, BTO or not.

Yes, you have to BTO an iMac or get a higher spec 27" model (hence paying more) to lessen the risk of a bad unit. Yes you shouldn't have to, but that's the reality.

My 27" i7 survived the long trip from China to Singapore. And it came problem-free and damage-free. So a lot of people are receiving good units. You are one of the unlucky ones.

I stand by my post.

It is the exact same response Apple and Steve Jobs gave to people who don't like it issues with their iPhone 4s so why not apply it here.

If you guys hate iMacs so much then why keep buying one? Get your money back. There are other alternatives and solutions as listed by posters above.

But if you really just want to come on these forums and gripe and commiserate instead of actually doing something constructive then.....by all means carry on.

Personally, I think the tune is catchy!

I think some of you are missing the point, I am in no way trying to start a flame war. I am simply giving my opinion on the current iMac situation, I am very happy for you that have received a perfect iMac...which is why I made sure to say MOST in my sentences, not ALL. It is a problem, I think they should do a better job...honestly how can any of you disagree? Just because you have received a good one?

I do think you guys are right, yes I do have to bite the bullet eventually. It just really sucks when you are the one actually in the situation. Which anyone who has actually had a defected one can relate to. The process is in getting a new one is easier then most companies, but still a pain.

People buy iMacs and go through everything they do because they want iMacs. Thought that was obvious. It is not that they hate them...they hate that there are good machines out there and they got the bad ones. What's wrong with wanting a good machine like..you?

Actually its the same for happy/unhappy customers, I think new threads are dumb, especially there's already a long thread discussing the same problem you're having. You're essentially pulling focus away from the main thread with your 8 paragraph rant. We know you're frustrated, we've been in your shoes, even us lucky ones that received good units. We did worry a lot while waiting for it to be delivered. We did worry and read about all these problems on the forums.

I know you're not trying to start a flame war, and has good intentions to find out this root of the problem and resolve it. No amount of thread starting and ranting will affect Apple's QC / production, there is nothing we can do. Just persevere till you get a good unit.

So, yes, really, you're not entitled to start a new thread.

In my humble opinion this is again a wrong way to look at the problem. Spend more and do not get problems.
Every iMac should be good. R&D should do there work better.
Sure, the technology is better and more fragile. In the past Apple products were less mass production and the hardware was a few years behind PC makers.
I think we have to choose. Older hardware but OK or recent hardware with the possibility that something is wrong. And make use of Apple's excellent customer service and replace your iMac. No other PC maker is so easy in that.

This is nonsense. The ones I've seen on display in the Apple Store do not have this problem. Neither do any of the reviews of the new iMacs that I've read mention that this is an issue. In fact, many of the reviews praise the quality of the screen. The T3 reviewer comments:

One thing that hasn’t changed is the screen. It’s still a gorgeous 16:9-ratio, 21.5-inch IPS display with excellent viewing angles and beautiful, rich colours. Most Mac users will love its glossy finish too, though those that prefer an anti-glare screen are once again out of luck...

This is not to say that there aren't some iMacs with problems. But your suggestion appears to be that the majority of iMacs are defective and that people are either too lazy or too ignorant to notice - including the majority of reviewers in the tech press. This is just as absurd as somebody claiming that the majority of people who claim they have a defective screen are all paranoid and seeing things that don't exist.

The reality is that, in all likelihood, a small proportion of machines are defective. Some people are also no doubt returning machines that are perfectly fine because they are paranoid.

Whatever your reason, Apple will exchange it for you if you are unhappy. If you are unlucky enough to keep receiving a defective unit then you are probably jinxed and it's best to look elsewhere.

Macpro is no answer!

We always get these guys saying, get a MacPro with separate monitor, etc,
well Im a professional photographer using Eizo monitors, iMac-27, etc.
Let me tell you the iMac is faster, better looking and if calibrated with a good external calibrator you would hardly see any differance at all between the iMac27 screen and the Eizo monitors.
Some people will have it that its world of differance but intruth its not.

best.

Frustrated. Dissapointed. Fingers Crossed.
......

Sorry for jumping in late, but I am with you, you described all the iMac situation so very well.
It is sad to watch a good company going under the second time. No, it is not going to happen overnight, but betting the farm on the telephone handset is kind of sad.

Can you actually calibrate a screen with the color gradient?

The OP was fine starting this thread.

I don't see any of you naysayers complain in any of the SSD threads that get started...... asking basically the same thing. No, you are just Fanboys trying to protect your precious Apple.

If you guys are so sick of hearing of the yellowing tint issue, the gray bar issue, well...... stop looking in these damn threads.

Do you really believe that someone would return a $2500 machine for no reason. Because they are afraid it has issues? Because they are seeing things? Hell no....... There are many more people who have an iMac on their desk that has the yellowing issue, they just do not see it, or it does not bother them. Good for them.

Are there perfect iMac displays out there? I would think so, and I hope I get one soon. Because the first one that Apple provided me was really a terrible display.
