We always get these guys saying, get a MacPro with separate monitor, etc,
well Im a professional photographer using Eizo monitors, iMac-27, etc.
Let me tell you the iMac is faster, better looking and if calibrated with a good external calibrator you would hardly see any differance at all between the iMac27 screen and the Eizo monitors.
Some people will have it that its world of differance but intruth its not.

best.

For a "Professional Photographer" you sure have low standards. You would compare a glossy screen iMac to a matte screen Eizo? OK. :p Most good Eizo monitors cost as much or a lot more than the top iMac.

This is nonsense. The ones I've seen on display in the Apple Store do not have this problem. .

Once again...I said MOST. Second, I keep hearing "well the one at the apple store are fine." Well guess what? If they put an iMac on display and it has a problem, they go upstairs grab one from the pile of 100, and replace it. So of course the one's at the apple store are better. Third, the iMac's at my store actually do have the yellow tint, so once again MOST do.

I am sure after this whole yellow tint problem, apple employees check most the computers they put on display to make sure they are good.

Also for people that keep coming in this thread saying we are either making this up, or are crazy because YOU got one that is good...well that is simply not fair. Let go of your apple teddy bear, nobody here is trying to take him away from you. We are simply expressing our frustration, in a simple internet forum civil type of way. Once again, I am entitled to make my own thread. Why you ask? Because I signed up for this site and have an opinion, there is no rule that says I have to follow any other thread. I am trying to be honest, and detailed. These types of threads do exist, but this is not to report a yellow issue. This is simply for those who have gone through a lot, who can share their frustrations.

I will blame the iphone for the shift of attention on their computer line.
I wouldn't. Going back to the early 2000s, Apple has a pretty solid track record of occasionally releasing some buggy Macs.

Below is just one example, a snippet from a review MacWorld did back in 2003 of a 15" PowerBook. That predates the iPhone by four years. There are many other examples of Macs with inexcuable QC issues before 2007.

I don't necessarily disagree with your thought that "there is no excuse", but with Apple's long history of QC issues, I wouldn't try to spin it as something new, or caused by the iPhone/iPad.

Quality-Control Issues

We can't check the vital signs of every computer Apple ships. We can, however, report on the quality of the PowerBooks we've received, and that report is not encouraging. Of six 15-inch PowerBooks Macworld ordered from a non-Apple retailer, three had to be returned. One repeatedly locked up and experienced kernel panics after being unplugged from an external monitor, another's fan ran constantly, and another displayed only the magenta video channel when plugged into an external display. So if you absolutely must have this PowerBook now, be prepared for potential problems.

The screen on the 1.25GHz 15-inch PowerBook used for this review exhibited a white blotch about the size of a dime when we put a white background (such as a blank Microsoft Word document) on the desktop. And the latch on this PowerBook locked inconsistently -- the lid occasionally popped up after it had been closed for a couple of seconds. Reports of such latch problems are widespread on the Discussions area of Apple's Web site and on other Mac-related sites.

I will blame the iphone for the shift of attention on their computer line. This is a joke. I have had 2 imacs sent to me, I paid 2600 for this computer and both have been defected.

I know most of you will say this is rare, but that is not true at all. Most of these computers have the yellow tint, most of these computer have the backlight bleed (ips glow), most of them have the grey band running across the bottom.

I just returned my first imac (the new 2010 one), because of the yellow tint, grey band, back light glow and received a new one with dust particles, and 3 pieces of hair underneath the glass, backlight bleed and the dog whistle noise. Are you kidding me? This computer is almost $3,000, how is the quality assurance this bad?

The first argument from people will be "then don't buy an imac". Easier said then done, when all of your programs are for apple, and you have used a mac operating system your whole life, you don't have many choices. I want a desktop with an i7 processor, and I can't afford a mac pro with a monitor. So because apple is consistently sending out defected imacs, I have to get a PC, keep calling tech support and sending my computer back, or settle for a product that is defected. No it's no my eyes, these problems are defects...not normal.

The second argument will be that "since this is a mac forum, the problem is exposed more". Once again this is not true. Most people just turn on their computer with the stock desktop wallpaper and don't notice these problems. If you look at thread after thread, on this forum and others you will notice how bad the problem is. One call to apple support and you can hear how used to these phone calls apple support is. Today when I called apple, the tech support agent was finishing my sentences about the problems before I even got to finish, because he knew what they were already.

The third argument is that these problems are normal. No they are not. Some one decided to write an article about how ips glow or back light bleed is normal, and others followed. The argument "my t.v has it as well!" doesn't work, that means your t.v is defected as well. Back light bleed and/or glow on these computers is partially due to the border of the screen having a small gap between it, causing light to pass through. This is mostly (not always) a problem on BTO iMacs because the screen is removed and put back on for the 2nd time, causing the corners to sometimes have a small gap letting light pass through. Just because it is LED backlit, does not mean that light won't bleed through on the corners.

There simply is no excuse for this, but the problem is apple is so focused on the iPad and iPhone, that it seems that their computer line is 3rd in importance now. People have made such a big deal about the iphone which is 200 bucks, and its antenna issue. The antenna issue is solved with a case. The iphone is 200 dollars. The imac is almost 12 times the price of 1 single iphone. The only fix for these imac issues is just to pretend it doesn't exist. I really want one of these, and yes I can just settle for one and I can just get used to the yellow tint, grey band, back light bleed, and high pitched noise. But I was raised that if you work hard, you deserve good things. I have worked my ass off to get the money for this iMac... and now because of either quality control or bad build quality, I am going through way more hassle then I should to get one that is good. At this point my fingers are just crossed that my 3rd one is good.

P.S. If you are going to tell me to read the Gizmodo article about how the yellow tint happens after apple makes the computer and its the shippers fault, I don't buy it. Even if this is true, Apple should build these computers so that they can make the standard shipping stage and be OK. That is the whole point, if they can't make it to the hands of their customers and be in good condition, then they are not building them well.

First, I am sorry you are having a difficult time with your new imac. I do agree that Apple QC has slipped a little, but currently (for me) they are making up any downfall in QC with a tremendous increase in outstanding customer service. I don't know where I read this, but I believe Apple is #1 in CS and customer satisfaction (I believe that was on the front page of MR at one point this year).

With that being said, I will have to disagree with you. I don't feel like the imac problems are as wide spread as you think. Without any offical data, we are just going to have to make our own assumptions, but here is my experience.

I was in charge of ordering all of the current imacs for my office. I believe our complex has now ~15 first revision 27 inch imac of which none of them have any problems you (or other people on the forums) have describe. Now... I don't do photography/video work... but the obvious yellow/grey banding, and bleeding I would easily be able to identify. Also, other than 1 imac at a local bestbuy, I have never even seen this issue. So my personal data leads me to that this isn't as wide spread as ppl make it out to be.

I was wondering... what kind of work do you do that is so mac specific and requires you to have a i7? You might have to reinvest a little money into re-purchasing software, but then again you can buy a i7 pc with monitor for what... maybe 1k? I think you do have a choice, it might not be the easiest, but everyone has a choice.

Personally, I think the tune is catchy!

If you don't understand what the OP wrote....read it back!
If you read it and you still don't understand it, don't write!
:D
Sorry...had to do that!! The words might be a bit off..but still!
And yeah...the tune is catchy!

I agree with the OP though....we must not be made to undergo this crap because we all love Apple and expect it to match our expectations!

OP...did you consider getting a 17 MBP or a 13MBP with a Apple (or Dell) display ?

Can you actually calibrate a screen with the color gradient?

Tom B.

Why you can calibrate any screen with just about anything, Question is: will it match the final print, everything in digital-photographt and monitors is about matching the printout.

colormunki is without doubt the best calibrator

For a "Professional Photographer" you sure have low standards. You would compare a glossy screen iMac to a matte screen Eizo? OK. :p Most good Eizo monitors cost as much or a lot more than the top iMac.

Think so? well I shoot Advertising photography and stock for the Getty Corp. I work with a 24 inch and a 30 inch Eizos and the iMac 27.
I got a massive printer standing on the floor and if I do an identical printout, A3 size from either of the Eizos or the iMac 27, they are 99% identical!

This is ofcourse providing the Post-Processing from RAW is done to perfection, as the external calibration of all three monitors.
Sure the Eizos gives a slight better, matt picture but as you know, all that counts in our business is the final monitor matching printout. What you see on tthe screen is what you should get out of your printer.

Not low standards just being good at your job is enough.

best.

Photo of not only Yellow tint problem

There seems to be more wrong with just an Yellow Screen Problem. The right version is the first replacement and the second replacement on is the left.
I would have agreed with the first replacement if there was no Yellow tint to it...but after comparing it with the second replacement...Holy ****

The second replacement had little yellow tint and I was about to agree to it, but the longer the iMac was on the more noticeable the yellow tint became.

If you don't want an iMac....don't buy one...if you bought one and you don't like it.....bring it back!

That's just not good enough for a £2k computer. No wonder Apple can get away with such quality issues if consumers will so readily accept it.

Just out of curiosity, how did you get 2 replacements at once? I am about to send back my 2nd iMac because of a yellow tint + gray bar screen. It'd be nice if I could convince them to send out a replacement before I send this one back.

BTW, I could live with a little yellow tint but the gray bar along the bottom is just atrocious.

I agree, though my yellow tint was kind of bad... the gray bar at the bottom was horrible. They Gray bar is what really forced me to send it back.

The iPhone/gadget obsession is very off-putting if you only love Macs.

It's been almost 20 years of frustration for anyone who knows exactly what they want in a computer. If it wasn't the Windows nerds making fun of me, it was Apple acting like we had nothing to complain about.

One silver lining is that I save lots of money by not buying computers that cost too much or don't even exist.

Wow, just wow. Some of the responses are way off the charts. How thick is the koolaid that Apple is feeding you? Lol.

It must be your fault, don't like it get something else, I have no experiences with your problems so it must not be happening, etc. Yadda yadda yadda.

Is it normal to 'hope' to get a good machine and considered "lucky' if you get one? That is crazy. Do people just say' it is what it is, and just that is good enough? Should we be scared to buy an new one and hope for the best? Is this normal? No it isn't and we shouldn't have to put with it.

I have never dealt with such issues, from Dell, HP or any such PC manufacturer. Never five bad machines in a row. With no apologies of any kind.

So what he made a new thread. Isn't most posts in the larger thread getting just washed over? He should be angry, upset and disappointed. Not chastised for it. Got a perfect imac, that is good for you, but there are plenty who have not. No reason to harp on them or say there is nothing wrong when there clearly is.

It is a widespread issue, and yes Apple is aware of it.

I have bought 27 imac's for my marketing department, with 13 or them having some kind of issue. Yellow screen, banding, pixels etc. So the issue is wide spread in my experiences. They have all been fixed over the last year but that doesn't take away from the fact that missed hours of work, or man power was lost, thousands of dollars wasted and deadlines missed all because of Apples low QC.

Personally for my home I just went through five machines, and no I don't have OCD.

First: Cracked screen, chipped glass.
Second:Yellow screen
Third: Crushed Box. Shattered screen, box was hit with such force the foam piece was cracked almost in half!
Fourth: LCD leak, big black blob on screen
Fifth:eek:ver 22 dead or stuck pixels. There were more but I stopped counting after 22.

I had just taken it back for a refund a 21.5 with Core i3 3.2.
They took it to the back and then came out and the manager said that was the worst screen he has seen is the 13 years he has been with apple.

After that was said, I told him why should I stay with Apple after five imacs? He said he can exchange it for a new one. That's it. Wow, thanks.

After a month and a half, not one 'sorry about that' how about a gift certificate to perkins? Nothing. Not one apology. Just we will send you another one.

Is that excellent customer service. No it's not.

After a month and a half, and five imacs they showed no interest to keep me as a customer. Never crossed their mind that I would look elsewhere for a all in one or a PC. Never. Not once did they try to keep me. And I spend countless thousands on their products. Thousands.

Will I still purchase them for my work. Sure they work well when they don't have problems. I bought a Mac Book Pro for work use to use at home.

Will I purchase a imac for my home, no. Never. Not again anytime soon.

Look at these pics, do I suffer from OCD, or am just complaining. Or paranoid?

There are better alternatives out there for a all in one PC with better entertainment options. I am looking for a AIO without screen issues or may go with a tower with more power. I can get a TV tuner, Blue Ray player, six-core processor and WM Center is better than front row for entertainment every day of the week.

No I still like apple, still like their products. But this was a blessing in disguise for me for a home PC I want a media center eccentric PC, and a "PC' is better at entertainment than a Mac.

Windows 7 comparisons aside, isn't this better for entertainment purposes? Either one of these. With a short keyboard or touch mouse would fit the bill nicely.

Lenovo build quality is as good as or superior to Apples.

To the OP, stop drinking the cool aid. Apple is not the end all of PC products. There are alternatives out there.

I'll say that you can't blame apple for the crushed box during shipping...that would be fedex's fault ;)

Really.

Shouldn't apple sent the computer in a better box with better packaging? The handle broke when the driver was getting out of the truck and it fell to the ground from five feet up. How is a faulty box the shippers fault?

Not one sorry about that, no gift certificate, no nothing.

I have read this thread with interest. In 2007 I bought the new 24" iMac when it first came out with the glossy screen and it had many of the problems mentioned in this thread. So did the next two replacements. In the end I paid some more for the Mac Pro and an ACD.

I am just amazed that Apple knowing that MANY people have these problems still churn out poor quality machines. I also suspect that many more customers have these problems but they either just accept them or deny that their perfect machine has any gradient or yellow tint on the screen.

It is difficult to see many of these flaws in the Apple store, since the lighting tends to be so bright.

My theory is that Apple just accept that they churn out some poor machines and they are rich enough to keep replacing them as many times as the customer likes.
I was told I could have a fourth iMac but they couldn't guarantee that it would be any better. I remember reading some of the threads at the time some people were on their 10th machine.

Apple Customer Service is amazing, they even gave me adequate compensation for my troubles, but production wise they really should have got their act together by now.

I reckon I have another happy 2 years with my Mac Pro before it will be time to get a new computer. Hopefully Apple will have fixed the iMac problem before then or come out with a brand new machine, but I am not holding my breath.

Mac Pros are amazing machines and I love mine, but it is overkill for what I use it for.

I am sure your experience is 1 in 100 or 1 in 1000 or something...for the most part people have been receiving their imacs fine from the threads I been reading. In fact from my recent research your the first to complain about shipping (and this is going through hundreds of posts). I mean there is some rumors going around about shipping causing the yellow tint issue but that has been unsubstantiated.

Maybe you should have gotten an iMac and an external monitor! :D I think it is cheaper and you would be bypassing all the monitor issues. jk!

Win.
Sacrifice the screen real estate for a Mac Pro and decent monitor (absolutely love mine and I own a design studio and stare at it all day). So it isn't 27". Get a Mac Pro and win!

Look at these pics...

you got yours straight from apple, yeah? my brother just got his early saturday and the apple box was inside another box, coming straight from apple. we usually buy used macs so i don't know what their standard packaging is.

peapody, what you think the chances of it happening to two different people having this problem twice in a row? I get my replacement imac tomorrow. Will report my findings

In anticipation, I have been looking at mac pro / macbook pro / external monitors.

I think "compromises" for people that require OS X seam to be:

  1. Baseline mac pro and pay an extra $1000 to get a monitor of some sort.. dell 27"?
  2. mac mini + dell 30" (new one out in October model number u3011)
  3. 17" Antiglare MacBook pro i7 with 128GB SSD

Of course all these options (bar MP) loose out on RAM and GFX card. But seams the price Steve wants us to pay for color uniformity.

Im leaning towards the Macbook pro… saw the antiglare screen at Apple store and very impressed.

So, people fed up with poor screen quality on 2010 iMacs, whats your next move?

I'd buy a Mini if it weren't still Core 2 Duo, and I'd buy any Mac if it had faster ports (FW1600 or USB3).

My plan is to buy absolutely nothing unless my 2006 iMac dies and can't be repaired for under $500.

Really, one in a thousand. I don't think so buddy.

You must have not looked that hard. I found two in two minutes. Same thing happened to my box happened to the guy below.

yes a refurb straight from Apple.

Most people are missing the point here.

We shouldn't have to put up with this. This is not normal. Just hope and cross your fingers? This is a joke. I personally will not be buying another imac. Buy a mac pro? Spend more money because they cannot provide a consistent product.

For my needs the Lenovo A700 beats the imac on hardware and media features. It runs W7 but that is not as big a let down as receiving five bad computers in a row. Win 7 is on par with OSX as far as I am concerned. For media features it beats it. I still love OSX and will be very happy with my Mac book pro. Another imac no way.

Apple can kiss my #ss.
