So..you're saying if they want to put up a link to Gmail (Google's product, not at all related to search engine), they should also put up a link to Yahoo! Mail?

Google should NOT put a link to its own product/service at all.

So how is Google going to promote its own products if they are never allowed to promote them?

So should Apple be banned from selling their own software on the front page and have a link for Adobe instead?

companies advertise on Google's search engine/ad network.

Okay, that is after you search. Not before. There are no ads on the main google homepage.

Also, why can't we just say that "Okay, Google charges itself for the services they 'advertise' on their home page"? The money in their bank will still be the same...that's like writing a check to yourself. Just say you did it, and get it over with.

Does anybody actually agree with this kid?

I'd wait for the actual outcome before jumping up and down.

Apple has been investigated by the FTC as well. Many have.

Hell, I'VE been investigated by them. :D

Apple is not a search engine.

What the hell does that have to do with anything? The fact that Google is a search engine doesn't mean they can't advertise their own products? Keep in mind that Google does not have ads on the home page, so they're not unfairly preempting other paid advertisers to display their own ad.

If I search for "Nexus S", the first result is Google's Nexus S site, which makes sense as it's obviously the most relevant. Then there's the Wikipedia article, Engadget, Android Central, Gizmodo, and other reviews. On the right in the ads, there's ads for the Nexus S on eBay, Amazon, a charity auction for a Nexus S, and Wirefly.

If I search for "iPhone", I get Apple's site, Wikipedia, AT&T, MacRumors, Amazon and other related iPhone search results. Ads are for buying the iPhone on AT&T, Verizon and Wal-Mart. Nexus S and Android are nowhere to be found on the iPhone search result page.

Google is doing nothing wrong here. There's no anti-trust issue at all. You're just letting your blind hatred for Google get in the way of the facts.

How do you know they didn't? Granted, the idea of a company paying themselves to advertise their own products on their own website is ludicrous

ROFL ok how old are you?

The fact that Google is a Search engine is THE WHOLE gist of the argument.

@Macnut,

So? what's that got to do with anything? if the FTC can prove that Google used its dominant market position to FAVOR its own products/service then that's all that matters. it doesn't matter if Search/advertising is their primary biz (which it is) or not.

So you are saying that Google should not sell a phone or have a email client because they are only a search engine? That would really screw with Yahoo's business model.
So? what's that got to do with anything? if the FTC can prove that Google used its dominant market position to FAVOR its own products/service then that's all that matters. it doesn't matter if Search/advertising is their primary biz (which it is) or not.
And I don't think they can prove that.

You know, if you want to be the Apple poster boy here (and I think LTD may have something to say about that), you're going to have to learn some facts.

THis one os on the house. Google derives over 95% of its revenue from its search business. Google it.

What is your fascination with defending Google in every thread?

I never really even defended google here other than pointing out that the screen shot was not valided. Frozen just has been posting anything antigoogle he can find and full of hate and refuses to answer the basic question.

To be fair, 1) there is a lot of anti-Google news to choose from. Google is the one making it, and 2) posting here is just parroting it, regardless of Frozen's opinion.

Tell Google to quit their underhanded ways and maybe there will be less negative press about them, and thus less fodder to post.

In this particular case, however, it's just an investigation and really shouldn't be used to cast aspersions on Google until we know the outcome. These days FTC investigations are relatively common.
