According to a new report Samsung is going to introduce the UHD display with theGalaxy Note 5*which will arrive later this year, in the fall to be precise. Production of the UHD panels is expected to start by August which would make sense as Galaxy Note handsets are traditionally unveiled at IFA in September. Galaxy Note 5 is said to have a 5.89-inch display with 748 pixels per inch. the battery will be bigger but i bet the buid quailty will be like the S6 and S6 edge..why would they go with metal and glass on the S6 and not the note line?

748 PPI? Holy crap. I would think the only purpose for that would be VR, otherwise I couldn't see my Note 4 display being anybetter, it's incredible as it is but I didn't see a huge jump in quality from my Note 3 subjectively.

I hope it is thinner, glass backed, etc. Don't care about removable battery, that seems kind of antiquated in these times of fast charging, ultra power saving mode and overall the stellar batterylife the Note series has. The loss of MicroSD will sting a bit, but I think I can live without it.

That pixel density would totally be for VR. Hands on with the Gear VR and the S6 showed noticeable improvement over the VR with the Note 4. This higher ppi would make it even better. I myself welcome this as I know the screen will be even be more efficient at such a high pixel density. And I plan on getting the Gear VR with the Note 6. I won't be upgrading every year anymore. BTW, watch YouTube in 1440P. I myself can absolutely see the difference over 1080P. Bring on 4K, I got unlimited data.

Well, as long as performance doesn't take a hit with that high resolution, I say bring it. Sounds great. If they don't offer an SD card, then I hope it starts at 64gb. Would be very disappointed if it still starts at 32gb. As for removable battery, I don't care.

my thoughts as well. Please keep the SD card for the N5.

I still think they might make a N5 edge that is unibody. Then a regular N5 with premium materials but with a removable back and battery.

They'll obviously go pentile again, which means that this display will be only slightly better than a full RGB stripe 2560x1440 while using way more system resources. I expect lag from a CPU bottleneck (same issue as rMBP UI frame rates). The Snapdragon 810 is not impressing anyone so I don't expect much help there.

Full RGB 2560x1440 would be a much better upgrade, but impossible to spec war with something like that (it involves admitting your previous 2560x1440 panel was technically quite a bit lower res on R/B).

Would be nice if we could settle on a PPI for a bit and bring the performance up to match... Display tech is moving forward way faster than CPU/GPU power right now.

Agreed. I understand how VR tech benefits from the higher display resolution but I don't understand why something that a comparably infinitesimal small percentage of Note owners will purchase and use is the driving force on this element of the phone. The benefits of having such a high resolution display for typical everyday use vs. the cost of pushing so many pixels--battery, CPU, GPU. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Why not make a specialized edition geared (sorry, pun not intended) towards those interested in VR (makes more sense to me than the curved display) yet dial back the pixels for the standard model?

100% with you. I wish they held back on the resolution for the S6. They've said as much that the higher resolution is mainly for the VR headset. Imagine the battery life that could've been if it was still 1080p.

The Battery might be bigger, yes. But a phone with over 700 PPI would require much more power- the batter life would drain pretty quickly. I can't see it happening: not until battery technology catches up.

As much as they push VR it will be like trying to physically push a bus up a hill. VR is even less likely to take off than 3DTV has with the masses.

It will remain a niche segment and devoting so much of your new phones resources to cater for such a small segment is utterly moribund.


If they are so willing to push VR at the expense of user experience for everyone else, then there is even greater chance SD Card & Removable Battery will say goodbye on the Note 5. Any rationale argument you could put forward why they would keep them becomes null avoid if you believe they would gimp a device so much by saddling it with such a hires screen just to cater for a small VR contingent.

I don't really care about any percievefed performance deficit caused by a larger high resolution screen. My 1440 note screen seems sweet battery wise.
I love that someone put there keeps moving the goalposts phone tech wise, and it's mainly Samsung doing the hard yards for phone hardware.

I can see a difference between 1080 and 1440, make OMLED better, keep making the best screens.
Battery life, while not exactly leaping ahead, isn't getting worse considering how much more use our phones are getting.

There is some interesting battery tech out there, I don't think it'll be too long before a shift in battery tech happens.

In the mean time, keep improving on your already class leading screen Sammy.

LCD displays are going to go the way of CRT, imo.

It is probably a part of a bigger picture - by giving the Note 5 super high resolution they can also use that same screen for dedicated VR-devices instead of making something separate. This would also give VR-developers access to reasonably cheap hardware.

As long as the Note 5 does not perform worse in daily tasks than the 3 or 4, I see no problems with such a screen at all. The Note 5 is in a small upper end of the market- any games and such will always have to be developed to run well on way slower hardware to reach the masses and will thus run great on the Note 5 even with a very high resolution.

Samsung has always been at the top of their game specs/hardware wise for the most part IMO with great cameras and beautiful screens. Not so much in design until lately with the new S models.

I wish they would work more on their software as it is the worst in the business IMO and yes they may have made some small strides with TW this version but it is still ugly as hell and needs an overhaul.

People seem to forget that Samsung use Super AMOLED, these displays are being developed at such a rapid pace to be super efficient, if I'm not mistaken there was an article published some while ago showing the Note 4's 2K display to being more efficient than the HD1080P in a Note 3.

I'm curious how efficient a monochrome screen might be. Seriously I have a very hard time running my Note 4 down. The ultra power mode provides supposedly up to 24 hours on 10 % battery life, that's nuts. If function over form is truly a concern just put ultra power mode on and you are good to go for a week. Heck just plug the phone into your car charger and go get a donut, you will probably charge half of it in that time.
