Very interesting. Something different that I didn't expect other than the normal Note 4 announcement. This Edge is very unique like the LG G Flex last year which had self-healing properties.

Perhaps gimmicks now but eventually refining standards someday. But baby steps to the right direction. Beta stages for those Sammy YOUM displays. This is really better for those flip cover fans.

Kudos, Samsung.

I agree. I like the idea for some reason. Not sure how it will actually function in my day to day use but as you said, it's perhaps a test stage for what they may do in the future...or not. Either it will sell or the regular Note will Prevail.

Not getting the Edge, but I'm glad it's finally out. Pics of the prototype have been out for years. Now I can at least go to the store and play around with it.

Not sure I like it 100% but I think it could be refined in both hardware and software over time to be useful to some people.

I would personally use the edge part as a ticker and notification area only, I think. This would allow incoming messages and notifications to be seen whilst the phone is laid flat and do away with buying a standalone desk dock or having to pick up the phone to see what the notoification is. Not sure another dock-type area with icons is the way to go on the edge part.

Early days for sure but, nonetheless, im interested to try it and see where it ends up in a year or two.

You know back in 2011, the first Galaxy Note was a bit too niche. Now the phablet segment has grown up so well that 5.3-5.5 is no longer labeled as phablet territory but the norm. Lines have been blurred. Just 15 min ago, I saw a girl in her 20's using an Oppo Find 7a. The 5.5 inch screens doesn't scare the Asian population with generally smaller hands. Phablets are now the norm.

Give it time. Usually the first gen, manufacturers are still trying to figure it out. It usually takes 3rd gen or after once they start figuring out and refining the concept. This concept of the Edge is quite fascinating. It started with the Galaxy Round and LG G Flex. The next stages is no longer curved or bent screens but foldable. The form factors of flip phones might actually start making a comeback. The Galaxy Golden was one of the coolest touchscreen flip phones I saw while on a Hawaiian trip. This is when I admire Samsung the most. Experimenting. Daring. Trying out new concepts. Looking back, it is those same reasons why I love Sega more than Nintendo now even though I bought every Nintendo console up to the Wii. Sega was just more creative even though it failed alot in hardware.

I handle my Note 3 with my right hand and mostly one-handed. I can imagine hitting 'the edge' constantly with the inside of my hand. Wonder if that will be an issue.

I agree, but I have to believe there is software to detect and ignore it. I still would be interested in seeing people's reviews on how this works in real life.

This might be a concern. In all of the videos I saw it seemed like there was no software to ignore input. I regularly saw people handling it swiping and having the wrong screen register it. I'll be curious to see the reviews and if this is an issue.

Well the Note 3 got palm detection when using the S-Pen so I'd be surprised to not see something similar.

I seriously am considering it just for this reason...I hate picking up the phone just to find out if my notification is something of little or no urgency from say Twitter or something more important from friends/family..not knowing means I have to check every time.

The whole Edge idea seems like it could be so handy, but than so clumsy and awkward at the same time...I look forward to trying one out in a store when it releases.

If only the Gear VR worked with the Edge. Shame it doesn't and maybe down the road it will.

The few hands-on reviews I saw mentioned the same thing--accidental touches seemed to be a problem.

Some of it's uses like the camera, video and music controls seem very nice and seamless. Other uses like shortcuts for apps and time/weather, I'm just asking myself .... Why would I need that over there(edge screen).

I agree - I rarely respond to notifications like messages, tweets or emails right away anyway (yep, I am one of those....). So just getting a quick heads up when at work (especially in a meeting) or at home when watching a movie or playing games without actually having to pick up the phone and can be a nice feature indeed.

I am quite sure that the next S-series (S6) will come in both regular and Edge-versions - it might even be more popular there than in the Note series.

I don't think the Edge is meant to sell as well as the 4, but I highly doubt it will sell poorly.

The Edge is a concept device with the public as the testers. Just like the Galaxy Mega 5.7 and 6.3 last year. The more popular of these 2 were destined to become the size of the Galaxy Note 3 and it's obvious which size won. The Note series is a huge hit, so why take a gamble with its flagship device with an idea like the edge that may or may not take off?

Looks an interesting phone. However it shouldn't be priced higher than a Note 4 as the Note 4 will be too high already.

I can see this phone dropping in price very quickly due to its niche status. I hope it doesnt feel too cheap given it will mostly be plastic rather than having some metal as per Note 4.

When is it getting released.

What gamble?

They're two completely separate devices..just like the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy S.

Someone mentioned that there should only be one Note device and that it should be the edge. There's definitely a gamble in making the Edge the one Note device.

Just to show how fickle I am, I've looked at a few more videos and it's really started to grow on me. I think as long as the edge bit doesn't get in the way and actually is worth using, I'm sold. Especially as (I'm hoping)it's a niche device which means maybe I can pick it up cheap on the 2nd hand market somewhere down the line..
