That's one area where reloads happen, but there are others.

16GB of RAM doesn't guarantee iPadOS won't decide to nuke an app running in the background. RAM isn't its only rationale for doing so. I often can go back to apps in the app switcher and see a reload scenario. Maps is another app that ends up in that reality a fair bit.
Maybe it don't guaranteed no more reloads, but if I buy the new iPad pro, especially the 16GB model, I'm expecting app reloads to be something that rarely happens. If like you said it still happens often its very disappointing.

It happens often enough, but I haven’t tried to find reasons. I consider it life on an iPad.

It could be killing them for CPU use or who knows what.

hm.
id hope not… thats quite dissapointing since the only reason for me to go Pro - is less reloads for increased RAM. are you completley sure it really happens as much?

I had a 2018 64GB 11” iPad Pro that I just replaced yesterday with a 256GB M1 11”. I did not really need to make the upgrade, but my wife wanted an iPad and this let me get one with more storage (the 64 was just a little too tight). Other than storage, there is no noticeable difference. The iPad Pro has been ridiculously overpowered since the 2018 models in my opinion. The only thing that would be a notable upgrade could be the mini-LED screen. Even then, it has plenty of people who claim the difference between the 2020 12.9” screen and the 2021 12.9” is not life changing. And it came with a price increase to boot.

Both the iPhone and iPad are mature devices that are not likely to ever really see a massive leap again. They will make small incremental changes that, over the span of several years, will add up to a nice upgrade when the old machine is ready to be handed down or retired.

As for those talking about RAM and reloads. It is my understanding that while Apple did increase the amount of RAM on the M1 iPads, it did not increase a single app’s RAM limit.

wow, thats actually kinda disappointing…. I was hoping the increase of ram will make it reload apps less often…

other than the reloads, I really have got nothing that I would like improving on my iPad Air 4. It’s as perfect as it gets

also I hear that the new iPad is going to have wireless charging and actually I really don’t like that at all I would in fact prefer it not to have wireless charging I’m certainly not going to use it so I don’t really wanted to have a glass back in Salon because I think it’s going to make it more breakable and may be a little bit heavier as well so all of those things are not things that I want,

i’d like to address this as well, what I heard is the increase of RAM memory in the iPad/even though Apple really did not increase a single APP limit, what I heard is that it is going to help with having the less reloads so the iPad can actually keep more things in the memories so this is actually confusing things that we hear right now that in fact compared to the air model we don’t really get a less refreshes dinner with the Air has... I wish I wish that was not really.

Are you really completely sure that your new iPad Pro and one actually reloads abs as much as your air 4 did?

This restriction would actually help reduce reloads since apps won’t be able to hog all the RAM.

Besides, single app RAM limit on iOS 14 was already pretty high (5GB) if you also want to do multitasking. Imagine if you have 2 apps wanting to use 5GB each. On 8GB RAM or less, that’s a guaranteed reload since there’s no swap on iOS.

It is, but iPadOS still cripples it in many ways.

Like is doesn’t allow multiple safari windows to stay around too long. Open a Window with a tab or two and swap to another Safari window then come back to the old window. A few minutes later and the old window will reload. Annoying if you used a private session in the old one as it will close all tabs and start you with a blank window.

On my M1 1TB 16GB IPP where it should be able to handle 4 safari tabs across two windows…

JavaScript, media, etc. playing on the tab?

When I first got my M1 iPP, I left 90 tabs open in Safari for a week (fanfics, forums and a couple of Amazon product pages). Surprisingly, none of the tabs reloaded after a typical week’s usage (ebooks, comics, some Excel and a video or two on Disney+). Mind, Disney+ did reload even when 1-week old Excel didn’t.

I find what you are writing to be more inline to what I was expecting from 8gigs on iPP. Can you please share more of your experience?

RAM is also the only reason why I'd want to upgrade from my 1TB 1018 11' Pro. 6GB RAM was great on iPadOS 14, but not so great on ipadOS 15 with more frequent reloads after a minimal of time doing something else.

With 16GB of RAM I expect no less than being able to hold many Safari Tabs and games in the background for a good amount of time. App reloads is the top iOS/ipadOS problem that Apple need to focus in future updates but until then, 16GB of RAM M1 iPad should reloads apps very rarely.

I don't care if Netflix/Disney+ reload, but Safari tabs or games I really do care.

Please note, that was on 16GB RAM, not 8GB. Going by the free RAM I had, 8GB might have reloaded some stuff. With that said, I bought because I wanted 1TB storage. The extra RAM was just a bonus (albeit one that cost an extra $200).

Mind, I'm keeping my 2021 12.9" on iOS 14. I even upgraded prematurely to the 2021 11" (from 2017 10.5") because I wanted a best-in-class 11" that will run iOS 14.

So, if I understand you correctly - you basically NEVER see reloads, thats what I expected :) and its good to hear

With the websites I visit and apps I use (mostly reading and some minor Excel), reloads are relatively rare on the M1 12.9 1TB running iOS 14. I think video streaming (app and website) tends to be prone to reloading though but that's not a frequent use-case for me. Thus far, I haven't had a reload *knock on wood* while swapping recently used apps/tabs when filling online web forms so that makes me happy (usually Files/Dropbox/Word/Excel+Safari for looking up some info).

I can't really speak for any other usage scenarios.

P.S.
I do tend to micro-manage and force close apps I don't expect to use in a while so I only have my most frequently used apps in app switcher. I don't trust iOS's "intelligent memory management". Also, it gets hard finding the app I need in the app switcher when there's too many open.

heck even 2017 iPad Pro is in ways overkill

iPad got mature I believe since the king of iPads ( Air 2) was released

I love the Air2 and agree it used to be king of ipads. have one myself

but there’s a new king if ipads and its Air4.
Truth be told Air4 is more a computer than an iPad, even thou the change was very gradual

Yes the Air 2 was a great iPad, same goes for the first generation 12.9 Pro. We have both in the house still and both still work fine for our kids for their occasional apps.

How different are the iPad's now that Cook has complicated the hell out of iPad's product line.

I read Apple is releasing new iPads next year but any idea which model is expected to get the change? and is it a significant change similar to the MacBook Pro or is it like the iPhone 13 being an S of the iPhone 12?

I am assuming the Pro is great but what is the strength of it compared to say the iPad Air? And the regular iPad is about $300 but is it good for games like Call of Duty or is it like using a very low end phone where the game lags and it is poor quality?
iPad or iPad mini: just buy it.

iPad Air: wait until the new model.

iPad Pro: you could argue either way.
