So I did it, went ahead and purchased a 256GB IPP 12.9 5th Gen! I think I’ll be happy with the 8GB RAM in the model I’ve purchased. Probably…by the time I need to have 16GB RAM, will be a few years away! It will be arriving this week. Just in time for my holiday break!
I have a feeling it will be a more then a few years away. The Air 4 just came out this year with 4gb of ram, the 9th gen with 3gb of ram and both get atleast 5 years of updates. The fact the pros start with 8gb of ram is great sign they will be pretty future proof

If one believes the new rumors, of the M# chips running on a 18 months cycle which seems likely, an updated iPad Pro is still 10 months away.

Given iOS has no swap, I think one is able to benefit from 16GB RAM right away for multitasking.

I have the 7th gen (A10/3GB) for beta testing and it’s been reloads galore after updating to iOS 15. Same goes for the recently released mini 6 (granted, not as bad).

With that said, 8GB is pretty decent and it’s definitely not worth the hefty cost to go up to 16GB if one doesn’t need 1TB+ storage. The fast M1 chip also makes the occasional reload finish much faster.

Enjoy in good health ??
Thank you! It arrived earlier today. I’ve been exploring, browsing, watching video (after setting up the iPad) for the last few hours. This lovely machine is really fast! I’m very happy. I also got the Magic Keyboard, which is working exactly like I hoped it would in terms of positioning the screen at the perfect height and angle for reading and watching video. Also, the key movement is great—I wouldn’t even think this was a ‘case’ rather than a real keyboard attached to a laptop! And so glad that I chose the 12.9 screen…it’s excellent.

Yes, I’m happy with the 8GB RAM on this model. I don’t need more storage than 256 on the iPad. I have external drives full of space. And, when I want to use/access something on my phone or iPad, I usually just Airdrop or Dropbox it over to the device. Likewise in terms of moving stuff off-device.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement! 😀 I do usually replace my iPads within 3-4 years or so, though I do still have a 7 year old iPad Air (v1) hanging around.

I give myself a Christmas present and upgrade my 11' 2018 iPad pro 1TB Cellular to the 11' M1 2TB Cellular version and wow, so far I'm very impress with the RAM (Most reason why I upgraded) So far, no apps or Safari tabs loaded and I have 2 games in the background, 10+ Safari tabs and many other apps open since yesterday. Normally, my 2 games automatically reload if I just make a more extensive Safari browsing/or Safari tabs automatically reloaded if I play games for more than 15-20 mins. For everyday usage like overall speed for browsing or open apps I honestly notice almost no difference between this and my 2018 one, but for those like me who use their iPad more than casually and need multi-tasking, the RAM boost is definitively worth the upgrade cost, at least for me.

And for those wondering why I didn't buy the 12,9 for the Mini-LED, I tried to love the 12,9 in the past because I'm a big screen lover guy, but for my usage, the 12,9 is just uncomfortable to use (I use ny iPad 95% of the time in hand) and the 11' is the perfect size/portability/weight for me. If I really need to use a keyboard, I have my iMac for that.

Considering chip shortages and the fact that most iPads but especially the (M1) iPads Pro are so incredibly fast and ahead of the competition, I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple pulls an "Apple Watch 7" on the entire iPad line-up and just give them some minor bumps in specs or aesthetics, like different color options and slightly improved displays, more internal storage, more RAM, etc., while keeping the M1 chips for the iPads Pro and maybe just getting the iPad up to A14 and the iPads Air to A15.

Or, perhaps even more likely, they'll just stall on new iterations until late 22 or early 23.

iPads are still selling amazingly well and are sold out in many regions. There's hardly any need for Apple to add to the lineup right now.

I'd get an M1 Pro now and not worry about the next model.

And as apps like Final Cut, Logic, etc., may not ever get ported to iPads, the current iPads Pro are way over powered for the apps they support.

Most of the apps have not rewrite codes for M1, so most of the apps would not be fast with M1 and has all kinds of problems like reloading.

The reason Apple is not putting Final Cut and Logic on iPads is not technical but monetary.

All of Apple’s current pro apps run well on every Mac released in the last five years, including the entry-level M1 mini and MacBooks Air.

Suggesting that these Pro apps can’t run on iPads Pro is ridiculous.

Apple knows most iPad owners gladly buy a Mac, and most Mac owners happily buy an iPad eventually. So, from a monetary perspective, it would be incredibly stupid of them to implement all Mac features and apps onto iPads.

Why sell one product that does everything if the consumer has accepted that it needs to buy two?

Pro apps like Final Cut are never coming to iPads no matter how powerful iPads become.

It will require consumers deciding they don’t like getting fleeced for more than double the money, needing to own both devices, and leaving the ecosystem entirely in disgust at the rapacious tactics, to move Apple off their course.

I don't want the iPad to be like macOS. I think the iPad need to stay as easy and intuitive to use as a touch device . However, I think iPadOS (And iOS) still have some big irritations stoping me to use like even a real laptop replacement like :

-Swap memory. Yes the new iPad pro have more ram, but I think swap memory would definitively resolve the annoying refresh apps issues people facing like forever. And just for that alone, its hard to use the iPad more than casually because you can't really multi-tasking without a constant fear your works will be lost because the app just refresh out of nowhere. Yes the M1 iPad almost solve this issue, but the majority of people don't have those devices.

-Independant sound control per apps. I cab't believe after all these years if I listen music or radio and just want to see a video on Facebook, youtube or even just browse the web and an ad pop up and my current music or radio listening will just stop. This is a really annoying problem and its even worse, especially when browsing the web lately when sometimes the music stop for no real reason. This reason alone stop me listening music on my iPad or iPhone while using it and just go on my iMac if I want to do this while doing other computer related things.

But other than that, I don't really need anything else and the iPad could be a nice laptop alternative for most people.

I also would like the OS to support simultaneous audio/video apps. On my Mac I can watch something muted on Youtube while playing audio from a different source; this is impossible to do on my iPad.

You can do that with iPad by running two apps side by side, but not iPhone. iPad will never let you run YouTube in background, cannot do that in android too.

I can play Youtube in Safari in the background, but not when another audio app is playing. I can't have two media apps playing at the same time.

I just tested it and no, even if you run 2 apps side by side, the audio will stop if you start another media on another app.
