Note that its in rough initial implementation meaning that you may have to manually set the track in the audio tab. but it works fine and the channels layout accordingly. I just did a source of Avatar with a DTS soundtrack and encoded it to aac + ac3 for the atv. works and sounds great

Excellent, Handbrake is becoming the ultimate app, soon there will be no need to use any other Apps.

I stopped using HandBrake for MKVs when I realized MKVTools could split the file and re-encode audio (without re-encoding video) if necessary. I'm not sure if the latest rev of HandBrake can do this, but if so, then it will be much closer to the "ultimate app".

Mkvtools i had been using to convert dts to AC3 now that handbrake does that i no longer have any need for it.

The problem with passing through the video from MV to Mp4 is that 99% of MKV videos are in a profile the Apple Tv wont play so a re encode is a must.

I had a bunch of Anime in MKV when i got my new Apple TV that was the first thing i tried with Mkvtools and none played.

Also handbrake is the only app i know of that can burn in SSA subtitles from MKV's keeping the original fonts colours and positions.

I just want to clear up the misuse of MKV to mean a video codec.

MKV is a container that can house virtually any audio or video extension. It is not a codec.

The video file contained with an MKV can be of many different file formats. It is not necessary to re-encode any video files that be played natively in iTunes. While iTunes cannot process the MKV media container, it can often handle the video housed within the container (x264 is popular).

MKVTools can split the audio and video files from the MKV container file. By analyzing the audio and video files, the program can re-encode audio if it's not AAC and simply output the video without touching it.

In other words, it's very useful to know the source codec because it can save you a lot of CPU time and frustration.

Like i said i have a bunch of anime in MKV the h264 profile used is not supported on the apple tv so splitting these files into a MP4 container wont do any good. Unfortunately most MKV are with h264 profile 5 which Apple TV hates.

Hi BlackMangoTree,
When MKVtools passes through video, it also changes the avc profile level to a value appropriate for the device you selected. So you shouldn't have to re-encode the video, which is a nice time saver :). Which version of MKVtools are you using? The newest beta does a much better job of changing the avc profile level so you might want to give that a try. I don't have an apple tv yet to test it on, but video passthru works fine for my iPad. Shoot me an e-mail if the beta is not working for you.

Yes the latest beta i have used and the latest stable release.

Passing through the video has not worked on 20 + MKV videos i have.

If it did id be over the moon.

The Jap Anime ones id have to re encode anyway since there is no way to get the subtitles working other than burning them in.

If you can somehow get me a sample video that won't passthru, I'll see if I can track down the problem. You can PM me if you want or e-mail via emmgunn.com.

I think I see the issue. When MKVtools changes the profile level, it only changes the metadata, not how the video was encoded. So if you run the new video through mediainfo, you should see 3.1 as the avc level, but none of the other properties of the video have changed. In a sense, MKVtools tires to fool hardware into playing videos of an undesirable profile level. It looks like your video has some specific high profile settings, which the Apple TV must be unhappy with and it can't be "fooled". So a passthru of the video won't work. I'm a bit surprised since, though the specs call for Main Profile level 3.1, I've gotten the impression that the new ATV is actually much more forgiving of high profile settings. It would be interesting so see what is OK and what is not. Perhaps the handbrake group will have some ideas in that regard as they work on a preset for ATV2.

BTW, I'd be happy to continue this conversation, but it's getting a little off-topic, so lets do so via e-mail.

aac 5.1 to ac3 encoder will be in the the next hb nightly. Also note that ssa subs can now be burned in (ssa very common in anime).

Great news.

I been converting many Anime the last 2 days burning in Subs, so far its working great. Finally a solution to get real subs on the Apple TV.

This sounds awesome! What are the HandBrakeCLI Options for DTS to AC3? Does it just happen automagically if you set for ac3 passthrough? I've been outta the loop for a while :(

Has the DTS->AC3 converter in the handbrake nightly builds been working for everyone? I encoded one movie using the nightly build, and in the audio tab the first row I have DTS to DPLII. Then on the second row I have DTS to AC3 (6 channel discrete). Is that what I want?

The reason I ask is when I play the movie back in AT2, it plays back the DPLII file and not the AC3 track. I tried holding down the play button to switch audio tracks or something but there's nothing there.

Am I doing something wrong?

After some trial and error of converting DTS to AC3, I've learned that you need to put the AC3 track as the first track and the DPLII as the second track to get ATV to play AC3. I don't know if this is true with the new ATV, but that's what I had to do for the old ATV and I've just kept doing it for the new ATV.

Huh....I still can't get this to work. I put the DTS->AC3->6 channel discrete track as the first track, and my receiver still picks it up as DPLII. I'm not sure what the issue is. My receiver is a high end receiver, albeit an older one, so it shouldn't have an issue. I guess I'll have to continue converting DTS->AC3 using Popcorn Time or whatever in Windows...I was really hoping to get rid of that step! Bummer.
