Agreed. As an iPad 3 owner, I was none too thrilled about the sudden introduction of the iPad 4. I got over it, though.
All Apple needs to do is add one more size to the iPhone. Keep the 4" screen, then give us maybe a 4.7 incher. I may be making this up, but I thought I read over in the Verge forums that someone figured out that around the 4.6 or 4.7 inch mark is where Apple can create a larger iPhone screen and still have apps scale up correctly (just like they figured it out for the iPad Mini size for apps to scale down correctly). Not positive, but if true...
Boom. You have your choices.
My only other concern is what specs the 4" version will suddenly be. Will it be comparable to the larger iPhone? Will the "cheaper iPhone" be the lower spec-ed one? Or will the 4" iPhone become the "cheaper" iPhone? Don't know. Apple's not exactly spec-friendly when it comes to their cheaper lineups. Look at the iPad Mini. Granted, the Mini was an addition whereas the 4" will have existed before.
Time will tell. Either way, anytime you're ready, Apple...
Ya that iPad 3 was a placeholder, the stepchild. Hopefully Apple is taking their time with this iPhone line expansion as to not release any "placeholder" products.
I think you are right about the 4.7" size.....I figure, if they move to that size they (if they wanted) could double the iP5 (4") resolution to hit 1080p and everything would easily translate while allowing for a higher resolution for apps/devs to take advantage of.
I'm hoping the cheap iPhone will fill the role of the current iPhone 4. Free on contract, probably around $400 unsubsidized. They could bump up storage for the $99 price point and keep the current 4" device in the $199 range with top of the line specs (I'd imagine the cheaper iPhone will have the retina display, but be bulkier and have the same chipset as the iPod touch - that is a year behind).
They they could do some interesting things with the larger iPhone - make it $299 (higher pricepoint) and add something like higher storage points and the "X" version of the chipset for higher graphics power.
Dunno if the current "X" chips would fit in an iPhone that size though.....who knows.
As for the mini, its actually not that crippled IMO. Save for the retina display, the CPU is every bit as fast as the 3rd gen iPad. Battery life is off the charts (I just plugged mine in last night after 7 days of standby and 12 hours of usage - streaming TV, games and browsing) and things like the wifi chip and LTE are top of the line.
Once they add the retina display, it'll be even more successful than it is now.....
And if Apple's changes to the iPad 5 look like the leaks (and they somehow get it under a pound), I think the iPad will further cement its dominance in the tablet market. There just isn't another tablet out there with the combination of sleek design, function (as far as form factor) and hardware. And hopefully, the delay of iOS 7 on the iPad means we'll be seeing some iPad-specific tweaks to take more advantage of the larger displays.
All-in-all, I think we're on the cusp of a huge time for Apple....lots of exciting things on the horizon. The time between now and the end of 2014 could see Apple re-asserting itself as "king of the mountain" so to speak.
