Apple would be foolish to release just a larger iPhone. It'd sort of be like they didn't learn anything.

I'm happy there's a focus on making smaller, mid-range devices more spec-ed out. I think the HTC One Mini, for example, is a great thing. The specs aren't bad and they're offering 16GB storage (I love what HTC is doing with storage; love that the One's minimum storage is 32GB. Kudos). Most mid-rangers of this sort are 8GB. Isn't the S4 Mini 8GB, if I'm not mistaken? Won't that essentially take up everything considering how much space TouchWiz needs?

I don't know much as I'm not very interested in mid-rangers, but I'm glad they're available for Android users. Choice, baby. Motorola X Phone seems to be a nice mid-ranger, too.

It's really really time for Apple to offer a choice. "Time" being 2014, I guess.
I actually think if they released a 4.5-4.7 inch screened iPhone it would be a massive success. Even if they kept iOS 6 on it, I'd probably hop right on that. I love the iPhone 5 but just hate the small screen on it which is my main reason for owning one. My 4.7" HTC One is perfect. Doesn't overwhelm when I hold it and I don't feel like I'm straining my eyes when I use it either.

S4 hardware flaws.. when compaired to Iphone
-Phone (androids) get HOT when doing anything on them
-"cheap" usb connection when compared to the lightning connector
-Takes for ever to charge

Are you charging with the official charger it came with? If not, that might explain the long charging.

I actually prefer micro usb. It is more universal and the cables are more reasonably priced.

agreed, after using my s3 for 8 months when i went back to my iphone 5, i could't even think of going to another mobile, iphone is really compact, fast(fast enough for me), no lags, etc. and that's why i've decided that only iphone 5s will be my next phone.

Agreed.

Wasn't it Jobs that said no one wants to use a smaller tablet? Now the Mini is outpacing the larger iPad in sales, isn't it?

2014* - the year iFans will suddenly learn their hands and pockets were more capable than they thought. ;)

*Maybe.

Here's a point where I agree with you Couch - Apple needs to and WILL move into larger screens on the iPhone.

I think people make too much of the Jobs line about smaller tablets. Markets change and Jobs knew that - there are even emails in which he acknowledged the usefulness of a smaller tablet.

I also think you blow the number of Apple users who think larger is bad out of proportion. Its true, many aren't CLAMORING for them, but most of us would welcome the options and there are some who desperately want it.

My only concern is keeping the supply lines and product lines relatively concise. The last time Apple tried to cater to everyone, they almost went under. I think the merging of the iPod and iPhone presents an opportunity to "consolidate" the two lines into one (somewhat - FaceTime audio and iMessage can mean an almost "phone-like" iPod touch) and in doing so offer more iPhone options.

They need to do it right though - annual updates on each phone in the line (3-4 sizes/devices). Sell out the older stock and forget about them. None of this "iPad 2" nonsense where an outdated product somehow clings to the product line.

I'm hoping, with the advent of the iPad mini 2 (with retina) that Apple will "kill" the iPad 2 and go with the mini and regular in the iPad lines.

It'll be a welcome addition when Apple expands the iPhone lineup - but additions I hope they have well planned for the future - none of this "iPad 3 because the chip wasn't ready and we wanted to change release timetables" nonsense.....if 2013 is the year we have to wait a little longer for something so they can iron out their timetables for the next 5-10 years, I'm all for it.

Consistency and efficiency. If Apple sticks with these two principles, new iPhones and products will be wildly successful for them.

Small screens are okay but then if you want to watch videos or read an ebook they can be annoying. Both of which I do on my commute.

However, part of the reason is also lack of initiative from the "web" to cater to mobile. Mobile sites designed for a mobile handset so look and function great even on a 4inch screen. I think my macrumors mobile site experience has been pretty good even on an iPhone. Never even felt the need to use an app to access it. Can't say the same for every other site though (looking at you, verge forums).

I would also like a 4/4.3/4.5 inch top specs android phone that can run the OS like a nexus 4 does. While a small screen is one reason I may not want to keep an iPhone, the tightness is the biggest reason for me.

And I want a future where a 4 inch screen can turn into 7 inch or 10 inch on demand. Either like a padfone concept or some other way, but that is the best solution IMO. I like what Asus tried but they are limited to Asia. If every ORM gave this a chance it would be great. I feel no need to carry another expensive tablet device to run the same mobile OS that my phone runs, I would rather take an "accessory" that simply activates the "tablet" mode of the OS.

I bet iPhone sales would shoot up and ipad sales shoot down if apple introduced an "ipad adapter" for iPhones and iPods that you can plug the phone into (or connect through a wire/wireless connection) and be able to use it as a tablet. Cheaper too.

Agreed. As an iPad 3 owner, I was none too thrilled about the sudden introduction of the iPad 4. I got over it, though.

All Apple needs to do is add one more size to the iPhone. Keep the 4" screen, then give us maybe a 4.7 incher. I may be making this up, but I thought I read over in the Verge forums that someone figured out that around the 4.6 or 4.7 inch mark is where Apple can create a larger iPhone screen and still have apps scale up correctly (just like they figured it out for the iPad Mini size for apps to scale down correctly). Not positive, but if true...

Boom. You have your choices.

My only other concern is what specs the 4" version will suddenly be. Will it be comparable to the larger iPhone? Will the "cheaper iPhone" be the lower spec-ed one? Or will the 4" iPhone become the "cheaper" iPhone? Don't know. Apple's not exactly spec-friendly when it comes to their cheaper lineups. Look at the iPad Mini. Granted, the Mini was an addition whereas the 4" will have existed before.

Time will tell. Either way, anytime you're ready, Apple...

Ya that iPad 3 was a placeholder, the stepchild. Hopefully Apple is taking their time with this iPhone line expansion as to not release any "placeholder" products.

I think you are right about the 4.7" size.....I figure, if they move to that size they (if they wanted) could double the iP5 (4") resolution to hit 1080p and everything would easily translate while allowing for a higher resolution for apps/devs to take advantage of.

I'm hoping the cheap iPhone will fill the role of the current iPhone 4. Free on contract, probably around $400 unsubsidized. They could bump up storage for the $99 price point and keep the current 4" device in the $199 range with top of the line specs (I'd imagine the cheaper iPhone will have the retina display, but be bulkier and have the same chipset as the iPod touch - that is a year behind).

They they could do some interesting things with the larger iPhone - make it $299 (higher pricepoint) and add something like higher storage points and the "X" version of the chipset for higher graphics power.

Dunno if the current "X" chips would fit in an iPhone that size though.....who knows.

As for the mini, its actually not that crippled IMO. Save for the retina display, the CPU is every bit as fast as the 3rd gen iPad. Battery life is off the charts (I just plugged mine in last night after 7 days of standby and 12 hours of usage - streaming TV, games and browsing) and things like the wifi chip and LTE are top of the line.

Once they add the retina display, it'll be even more successful than it is now.....

And if Apple's changes to the iPad 5 look like the leaks (and they somehow get it under a pound), I think the iPad will further cement its dominance in the tablet market. There just isn't another tablet out there with the combination of sleek design, function (as far as form factor) and hardware. And hopefully, the delay of iOS 7 on the iPad means we'll be seeing some iPad-specific tweaks to take more advantage of the larger displays.

All-in-all, I think we're on the cusp of a huge time for Apple....lots of exciting things on the horizon. The time between now and the end of 2014 could see Apple re-asserting itself as "king of the mountain" so to speak.

It's seriously a damn shame people are forced to make a decision between iOS and a larger screen.

If Apple offered up a larger iPhone, it would eliminate that difficult decision for so many people.

You give people that choice in every single one of your other lineups with a screen; why not the iPhone, too, Apple? It's time. It's really really time.
I could not agree more!

And I'm posting this from my Galaxy S4.

One of my favorite phones, yet I'm an Apple guy that would be thrilled if Apple would get off it's duff and give us a five inch screen and a SwiftKey keyboard!

That's all it would take to make it the best iPhone ever.

Just wish Apple would give us an option of a larger screen - 4.7 inches would be sweet.

They did it with the iPad so it stands to reason they'll do the same with the iPhone. I just hope they do the same by not eliminating the larger iPad and selling the mini solely. That way people who want a 4" screen can get that and whoever wants a bigger screen can get that.

If you hate the small screen and lack of openness, the 5S and iOS 7 aren't going to help.

If he thought the S3 was "meh", well he may not be blown away by the S4, since it's mostly just an S3 with updated specs.

And we don't know anything about the 5S to be able to speculate. It could have a larger screen.

Well.. I pulled out the windows PC and rooted this Galaxy s4. Installed some Liquidsmooth AOSP on it and bam! I feel at home again.

I know they are completely different however I get the same clean feel using vanilla android & IOS. Installed all my google apps and sync w Chrome on my OSX computer and currently restoring itunes via iSyncr.

Screen is huge.. I am happy. Can't wait for my Tpu case to come in so it gives me something to actually hold on too, this phone is razor thin.

As someone stated on here, it is a shame that one has to choose between large screen and ios. 1st world problems right? Whatever..

In response to the slow charging, I am using the samsung charger from the Galaxy nexus Which is..... 1.0 amp! Stock s4 charger (which i dont have) is 2.1 amp so it looks like I will be purchasing a new charger or the wireless one.

And every android I have owned has became hot to the touch when watching a movie/game/application (Incredible, thunderbolt, moto razor, g-Nexus, S3, and S4). The iphone is not effected what so ever and my I5 never got hot.

Bike race was a huge one for the s3/s4 & I5

Anyone have input on the samsung wireless charger??

Mine just arrived. I'll need some time to test it. It feels great in the hand but you can tell the difference in weight with the modified battery cover and I don't like it. The charging mat feels premium too but it doesn't come with a USB cable which is BS.

It looks awesome and is convenient!

I ordered an oem samsung s4 charger and Was going to pick up the samsung wireless components but read wireless charging only provides 650milliamp rate.

May look into it in the future. Or possibly a knockoff/mod for cheaper

Just hopped in the shower and checked the battery before and after and it went up by 2% in 10 minutes.

Not the fastest........ haha Thanks for the input I may skip the wireless bandwagon.

Something else I picked up on..

Headphone output quality Iphone>s4

Only download in HQ and use quality cans... the iphone/apple ios/ipod produces a much better sound then this android.

Tested between
-Galaxy s4
-Iphone5
-Galaxy Nexus
-Ipad mini
-Ipod shuffle

Tested with
-Stock iphone 5 ear buds
-Audiotechnica m50
-Meelecktronics ceramic ear buds (forget the model number)

Every apple device sounds 30% better then the samsung phones on audiotech/MEE. Sound about the same thru the cheaper apple buds

I thought I would miss my S3 more than I have.

I started at the end of 2009 with an iPhone 3Gs. I had that until the end of 2011 when I switched to the Galaxy S2. I was drawn by the larger screen since I'm addicted for Flipboard and I was terribly bored with iOS.

Flash to 30 days later: I returned the S2 and reactivated my 3Gs. I had been having dreams about my iPhone so it was time to switch back, haha.

Unfortunately that didn't solve my problem of wanting more from my iPhone. Come September 2012 I decided to upgrade to the Galaxy S3. This time is stuck..for awhile. I enjoyed having the larger screen, I enjoyed it being more open and customizable, and I enjoyed having something that wasn't the blandness of iOS, however my dislikes kept gnawing at me. It was laggy, it restarted randomly on occasion though not terribly often, the text messaging app was CRAZY SLOW. And the battery was appallingly bad. I read so much about the great battery life, but I thought it was awful. It was worse than my 3Gs.

After nine months I switched two weeks ago to the iPhone 5. I had been thinking about it since I'm going overseas for a year and the iPhones just seem more reliable, but when I watched the iOS7 intro at WWDC I was sold. I know a bunch of people don't like it but I am very much looking forward to it.

The Galaxy S3 was a good experience that I don't necessarily regret, but I also have zero regrets about getting rid of it. I will miss certain things: (SwiftKey), easier sharing to ALL apps... but it's nice having that solid iPhone in my pocket.

Don't even get me started on the awful Android OS upgrade cycles and splintered and often year+ long carrier rollout delays of those. Nightmare.

I personally do not see the point of a "wireless" charger for me. It still has a wire and something bulky, it takes me a second to plug a usb cable to my phone

Really? I would love the convenience of just sitting down at my desk and laying my phone down next to my computer as i normally would and have it change vs messing with a cable.

The pad wouldn't be for someone that is moving the charger with them, more of a stationary deal.

My last blackberry bold had a dock on my desk and it was one of the features i loved. no fussing with usb and having wires in the way.
