My 10.5 was cellular and while it was nice when I needed it, I found that I maybe only used it twice per year. I also changed my cell phone plan so I get 5GB high speed hotspot with unlimited 3G hotspot and it didn't change the price of my plan, so if I need to connect to cellular I'll just go that route. Connecting to a hotspot is literally only like 2 clicks away and it means I don't need to have a whole separate plan or spend a bunch of extra money for a wifi+cellular iPad, so my new 11-inch is wifi only.
and you can always when you need it connect true your iPhone

I always go for cellular to get the GPS support. If you don’t need that or separate data from your phone then you’re best off with standard.

I have gotten every iPad (except for the original), and alternated back and forth between Wi-Fi and Cellular. My 2018 11" iPP is LTE, and my 2020 12.9" iPP is Wi-Fi only. Assuming I pull the trigger on a 2021 12.9", I'm leaning towards 5G.

Yes, I can tether, but it is really liberating to just take the iPad, open it up and go!

I have been using cellular version since the iPad 2. Yeah my office has wifi but do you want your company to see what you do all the time? Tethering sounds good but doesn’t work as good in person, it sometimes disconnects and also drains the battery of your phone.

VPN will solve that.

I have always had cellular iPads, this time got the 12.9 wifi only, will tether to my 12 pro max when needed, saving $300AUD a year.

The only reason I go with the cellular iPad is because I can easily pop my Work phone SIM card after I clock out/the weekend Or even my personal iPhone sim card and get unlimited 5G data at no additional cost or plans, and I can even text and make phone calls via FaceTime with the SIM card popped in its great.

Sure, buy an international SIM. I personally haven't traveled overseas with my LTE iPads, but I'm sure others have. All iPads are unlocked, unless you get them on a payment plan buying directly from AT&T.

Anyone know how to setup T-Mobile account with iPad if they have no existing lines with t mobile?
Looking to get that $200 gift card reward for buying a cellular 2021 model.

I currently have unlimited cellular for $20 a month. Since I don't use my iPad as much as I used to (before getting the M1 and MacBook) I am thinking of getting T-Mobile's 5GB / 150 days for $10.

I’ve always bought the cellular version, but this time I may skip and get wifi only. I barely, if ever, use the cellular option now.

Same here. Every single iPad I’ve ever bought was always cellular. Until this one. Tethering is so much easier now than it used to be. Plus, unlimited plans are much more doable than 5 years ago. AND, tethering used to kill your iPhone battery. But now these gigantic Max phones just laugh at tethering.

I recently bought a used cellular iPad Pro because where I work doesn’t let personal devices on their network for “security“ reasons. Either use a chromebook, shoot me now, or buy my own device. Best decision I’ve made it the tech department. No blocked sites, or issues with outages. It makes me a million times more productive. Of course, cellular is not for everyone. However, I’m using it five days a week.

Is there any mechanism by which a wifi iPad can exploit the GPS in an iPhone?

The obvious alternatives of getting an iPad with cellular (hence including GPS) or an external GPS device both being noticeable cost bumps.

In reality, I think this would be a relatively rare requirement as I am mostly happy with phone GPS. But it seems a bit of a shame to have a nice big screen and not be able to use it. I expect partner to be the person actually using it, as passenger, and the bigger screen would be an advanatge for her.
