Seems bit messy to setup, also genuine question with most smart TV's having DNLA - what benefit is there to having this. My Samsung & LG TV's can do ths from both my iPad, iPhone, BB Z10 & HTC One without a dongle. So is this just for TV's without buit-in Wifi & DNLA?

YouTube: video

It's mostly for people without smart tvs. I wonder how Google ending the Netflix promo will affect sales.

There are many. But even in the Google presentation you can see where they say the stream comes from the cloud and you can turn your device off once you send the stream command. So that there tells you it is not a peer to peer Wi-Fi connection.

I think you are wrong. You have to have both devices on wifi. Otherwise someone walking by my house could throw content up.

Always a day away
The Chromecast seems to me just like Google+ - a great idea from Google that's bound to fail over the long-term because it's way too late to the party.

I think you need to go back and read my posts before calling me wrong.

I did and have seen nothing that supports what you are saying. It just says once you start a video it works over the cloud so you can multi task. I think you have to be on wifi to start the process.

This is what I'm referring to:

I know that the lag issue isn't much of a problem on newer devices, But it's still an issue that will probably make this device get a mix reaction once it gets into enough people's hands. Especially since a majority probably have 512MB RAM devices. Easy enough to do Netflix, but might be an issue to both stream and have it play on the device at the same time depending on how it works.

I have devices running Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, AND Jelly Bean. I really don't know HOW you could just force something like that to work with just an app update when on iOS it's a firmware thing.

It is called the OS (Android) had the ablility to stream stuff out from day one. It is not as lock down as iOS. iOS can not access other apps to handle load. Android a back ground app can be running and another app just trys to hooks into it.

I agree as well but we'll both know soon enough, not worth the aggravation of debating it any longer.

Well that didn't last long, from Engadget:

Google drops free Netflix Chromecast promotion a day after launch HD

Three free months of Netflix with the purchase of Google's $35 Chromecast dongle sure sounded too good to be true. Turns out it was -- or at least too good to last longer than a day. Google's pulling the plug on the promotion, telling The Los Angeles Times that it couldn't keep things going, "due to overwhelming demand." So good on those folks who got in early, and while the streaming plug-in still has a pretty sweet price point, it's not quite the $11 post-subscription deal it was yesterday.

If this eventually gets support to mirror your laptop screen, it will sell even better then it already is selling.

It will only show up when it detects a Chromecast on the same wifi network (at least that is what I read)

Yeah it shows up when it detects a DNLA connected device. I can see my TV directly on it, when I press it - it actually loads up the TV's YouTube app and the gives me remote controls on the iPad. It doesn't actually play through the iPad like it would if you were using Airplay on AppleTV.

I assume these will ship early. My play store receipt said ships by August 2, but I just got a shipping notification.

When it detects a chromecast on the same network it will show. When you then select chromecast it will instruct the chromecast to fetch the media from the net and pump it into the TV. It doesn't use any "apps" on the TV itself which is why it can be used on any "dumb" tv with a hdmi port.

So Chromecast button will show up on Youtube App or Youtube webpage?

both. The youtube app is already supported and anything in a chrome browser will have the option if you are using a Mac/PC. The only apps that are supported right now are youtube, netflix, google music/video. If you are using a tablet or phone, you cannot use chrome browser to "airplay"

Can the Chromecast work without the USB power cable? Is the USB cable just to charge it?

I sure hope so..

Nope. It doesn't have an onboard battery, needs power, either from a powered USB port on your TV or the old fashioned way via wall outlet.

That's... that's horrible. No?

Probably not a big deal unless you have a wall mounted TV or are using a spare HDMI port on the side of the TV.

Also, reviews seem to be less than glowing, though much of it has to do with the current lack of supporting apps and the lackluster mirroring experience from Chrome--two things bound to improve over time.

The key here is the price point. It's at such a low price that if it isn't great, it's not a big deal if it's not perfect.

I mean, it costs the same as a lightning to 30-pin adapter, and if the pious ones in the forums above can say that's a reasonable price to pay, then $35 for a Chromecast looks an absolute steal, especially if you got 3 months worth of netflix included.
