The key here is the price point. It's at such a low price that if it isn't great, it's not a big deal if it's not perfect.

I mean, it costs the same as a lightning to 30-pin adapter, and if the pious ones in the forums above can say that's a reasonable price to pay, then $35 for a Chromecast looks an absolute steal, especially if you got 3 months worth of netflix included.

Agreed that its a fair price but you also have to take into account functionality. If someone is looking for more than streaming of a couple apps, the extra cost of a Roku or Apple TV may actually make it a better value.

And what may not be a big deal to some can certainly be an issue for others. An exposed power cable sticking out the side of the TV for everyone to see wouldn't fly with my wife (or me for that matter). :D

I agree as well but we'll both know soon enough, not worth the aggravation of debating it any longer.

----------

Well that didn't last long, from Engadget:

Not sure why you are so aggraviated; its a discussion, when adults talk they do not always agree, but they discuss each others POV. Being able to discuss something with someone without getting upset or "aggravated" is a sign of maturity....as is being able to admit when you are wrong.

As in this case; I have my Chromecast and it does need the same wifi network, I was incorrect. See, no aggravation, no big deal. Next discussion, when someone does not agree with you (and it will happen more often than not), relax, do not get aggravated, it is just a discussion.

Do they both need to be on WiFi though? If so, back to the original question, what benefit is there to being on two different networks?

Let me help you with that--a sign of maturity is being able to admit you're wrong without including a snarky wise-a$$ comment and defensive diatribe.

Pot, I'd like you to meet kettle. ;)

Buddy, you started this entire thing, first by commenting on a reply I didn't even make to you, then defensively replying 4 days later with aforementioned snark and continuing it with your last reply. I'm sorry you're so butt-hurt that that you were mistaken with your previous assertion but no need to take it out on me.

You know how this would've gone had you displayed a even a remote sense of maturity? (your choice of word, not mine)

You: Well, looks like I was mistaken and it appears both the device and the Chromecast need to be on the same wifi network.

Me: Hey, thanks for the clarification, appreciate the update.

I have no axe to grind with you or anyone else on these forums so turning this into a pissing match is all on you.

With that said, I'm moving on. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Now that the Chromecast has been out for a while, how are people liking it?
I love it - for Play content. I don't have a Google TV device, so the Chromecast fits that niche very nicely. Netflix is cooler via the Chromecast, even though I've got several other devices attached to the same TV that also do Netflix. I enjoy just being able to start it up on the phone and cast it and having the TV switch to that HDMI port automatically. It's not magic - it's just that all my other stuff is on an HDMI switch and so the auto-switching bit doesn't work reliably for them.

The other streaming features (YouTube, etc) aren't used by me, as I use the ATV or the Roku 3 for those. Chrome tab streaming is cool, but not useful to me (nor do I use AirPlay streaming from the Mac). However, it does a good job with those things... I just don't tend to use them.

It runs hot, but doesn't seem to be affected by it. WiFi reception is OK but not excellent, so you definitely need a strong signal. I ordered a 90º HDMI adapter to make it reside vertically behind the TV, so now it doesn't go right to the edge.
