Oh hey, would you look at that? Yet ANOTHER thread derailed by someone's pointless fanboy comments. I'm not sure why I even try contributing on MR any more, as basically every thread just turns into a bunch of mindless fanboy headbutting. It's like an elementary school playground around here. "My team is better!!" "No, MY team is better".

A lot of people just take *LTD* Comments and pass over them. Only reason I keep removing him from my ignore list is it is sometimes funny to see what the thoughts that go on in apple fanboy and to know which arguments to consider complete invalided.

To get back on topic. I though Google IO had a lot of good things this year and I am glad they finally got the part together to help push updates to the android phones. The most important part of that being the carriers. In my book 3 months is enough time for an updates to be pushed out after the code is released.

They will. As PCs start to look more like tablets, and tablets become much more powerful. The writing's on the wall.

I agree. Even when you have that one Asus Slider who actually won? Tableters will scream "Look, tablets have replaced PCs!" while PCers will shout "Haha, look tablets have become PCs!".

The simple matter is that computing is going mobile and personalized. Eventually there will be a computing solution that caters to every lifestyle, whether you prefer something strapped to your wrist, in the dash of your car, or even at your desk.

(PS, keyboards work on tablets. I have always thought they were useless in laptops as when take it with me I don't need the bulk and when I'm home I attach an external keyboard anyway)

EDIT: That said, Chromebooks aren't PCs. They're mobile cloud computers. Never have to worry about viruses, defragging, bad partitions, etc. Only issue I have with them is what happens if Google kills something I use like they did with Wave? I wish I could settup a Chrome "server" on a server I have and administrate it from there for my parents. Build it with open services that I can host myself incase Google goes down in 10 years.

You must not do a lot of typing

I find it hard to edit a large document on a tablet. For one, tablet word processing software currently sucks. It's either a crippled version of Word, or in Apple's case, a $10 version of Wordpad. There's also no mouse so I have to lift my finger and tap the screen every 20 seconds.

What TV do you use? He rents stuff from iTunes

What watch do you use? The clock on his iPhone

What camera do you use? The camera on his iPhone

What speakers do you use? The ones built into his Mac

What DVD/Blu-Ray player do you use? You're joking, right? Steve says Blu-ray is a bag of hurt. He buys movies from iTunes and watches them on his Apple TV

I bet those are the answers :p

Most non-Apple tech out there just SUCKS.

What TV do you use?

What watch do you use?

What camera do you use?

What speakers do you use?

What DVD/Blu-Ray player do you use?

TV - Sony Bravia 40" LCD, one of the very few good Sony products.

Watch - The clock on my iPhone 4, iPad 2, or Mac - whichever I'm near at the moment.

Camera - The one on my iPhone 4. Hugely impressed with the results. I do use a Canon point-and-shoot from time to time, but my iPhone 4 has nearly replaced it. The quality and breadth of photography apps are astounding.

Speakers - iPhone 4 + Premium Apple in-ear headphones. And whatever is attached to my Mac. In the car I use what came stock with it.

Blu Ray/DVD Player - What is this, three years ago? I stream everything I can. No discs and such, thank you. I also use a WD HD media player, but the interface is garbage. I'm seriously considering an AppleTV, though its inability to do 1080p is a bit of a deal-breaker.

So yes, there are exceptions, as I said. But most of these are in areas where Apple doesn't offer anything. The Apple TV is one thing I'd like to see improved, but there is some evidence to suggest Apple has something very big in store when it comes to that.

So you're basing your opinion that the Zune, Kin, Pre, and Xoom all suck based on the fact that Apple doesn't make them. Not any actual experience using them. Again, I ask, how much does Apple pay you to post this garbage?

As for the Xoom . . . it's made by MOTOROLA (box-maker), using a universally licensed OS, open source. This has to compete against a closed, controlled platform that is based upon a fully realized, proven ecosystem, with proven interface technologies.

Motorola, using a free OS, with little to no oversight by Google, competing against Apple; an Apple of 2011 that has already revolutionized several tech sectors in almost the blink of an eye.

Now YOU tell ME wtf my motivation is to even take a sideward glance at a Xoom. Already one foot in the grave because it's Motorola (generic box-maker), and the other foot in the grave because to top it off they're using a free, open source OS. So what are the odds it should work exactly as it should upon release?

Open Source + generic box maker = irresponsible. And it shows. When you don't control every aspect of what is done with the OS that you put your branding on, guess what happens?

Consumers pay money to be guinea pigs, and are told to be patient while the OS maker (that has little or nothing to do with the hardware makers) "gets it right." No thanks.

That's just one example.

On the other hand, use an iPad for any length of time, and the differences become immediately apparent. Seamless. Smooth. A delight to use. Because the company that makes it has enough respect for its product to see the process through - from OS to hardware. That kind of attention to detail pays off.

LTD, I've barely put my Xoom down since buying it for casual computing. It has singlehandedly changed the way I consume my media, communicate with friends and how I browse the internet.

What exactly am I missing by not using an iPad over the Xoom in my hands now?

You're making assumptions, that's all. You haven't used those products, you have no standing to criticize them. Just like the old saying goes, you know what happens when you assume.....

Unless the input problem with tablets is solved, they won't replace regular laptops. Typing for an extended period on a tablet is simply painful and horribly slow. Physical keyboards aren't going anywhere and a tablet with physical KB would be a laptop with touchscreen.

Ok, then let *someone else* tell you how bad they are. LOL it doesn't matter. When no one wants a non-Apple product made by Motorola using a whored-out OS, it's probably safe bet that the 1/2 hour I'll spend trying out one of these things would be better spent getting an ice cream cone.

We already know Google isn't focused on end-user experience. We know that the Xoom is nothing like an iPad. We already know it isn't selling. So why be a sucker and try one out to simply CONFIRM WHAT EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS?

You don't need to actually go to Central-Liberty In Cincinnati to know the place is a friggin dump, do you?

We're in the tablet, post-PC era,

LTD - you are Apple's wet dream since you eat and chew out word-for-word their PR nonsense.

Predictable post by predictable posters.

I bet when he's walking down the street tomorrow he'll get picked up by an Apple wagon and taken to Steve's secret fortress under the sea to work out a multi-million dollar deal.

Actually, there's nothing unique about the situation Apple is in right now, as it's almost a parallel to what happened back in the 80s at Apple. They were huge, and there were Apple II clones everywhere, and the Mac had a bit of popularity.

Problem was, it was super expensive and didn't have the luck of becoming a fashion icon like the ipad has. The Amiga was arguably a far better alternative, and so was NeXTStep (a far more EXPENSIVE alternative), but yea.. Windows won lol..

Only Android is more of an Amiga OS, not a Windows 3.1.

Ironically, iOS is based on NeXTStep as its older brother Mac OS X is, lol.

it beyond that. He has complete refused to look at Android at any more than bash it. I bet he has done nothing more than maybe and I mean MAYBE played with one in a store or with a friend to look for reasons to hate it. Not hard to find them in anything if you are looking.

I can go down a long list of things to bash on his precision iOS that are much more valid than most of his android bashing. Hell add to the fact I do own an iPod touch and have for nearly 1.5 years now and there are many things I think are crap about it in terms of the OS.
1. The Notification system on it is beyond piss poor and sucks.
2. Multitasking to this day is still a hack job and at best wanna be
3. It sucks at information at a glance
4. limited options for customing it and options on something is hard too.
5. On button navigation is annoying as well since always force to go back to the home screen. No way to just easily go back or pull up in app menus.

I try to look at new things as what in there looks promising and looks like I will like.
I ask are there any positional red flag and things that will annoy me like crazy and generally those need to be look at closer.

Take for example a week ago I got an Atrix. I knew going in that it was a software keyboard only and after a week I really miss my old blackberry keyboard. I miss a hardware keyboard plan and simple. But the trade off is a much better web browser, better apps, widgets and a little easy navigation around the system. Notifications are not as good but still very nice. I like the pull down set up on android.

When looking at the phone I got a chance to play with one of the windows phone 7. There were things about the OS that I though were really pretty cool and I love the info at a glance set up. Now there were something that bugged the hell out of me and it was a surprise thing and I know most people what drove me crazy it would not bother them. It was how it jumped between apps when hit one of the tiles. Just annoyed me. A good friend of mine in the 5 mins I played with it I knew she would love it and it is a very good set up for her. Fairly simple info at a glance. iOS she hates for many of the same reasons I do and add in the iTunes issues and she REALLY hates iTunes as it a overly bloated heavy slow piece of software that kills a computer more than a few years old when multiple other modern and newer media players work great and hell even fly on older computers.

Back on my Atrix getting it set up took me some time to get it exactly how I wanted it. Stock SMS cliniet is ok but I dumped that and got SMSPro (free no ads in the market) and love it and allows for a lot of other little settings. Bought another keyboard (swiftkey) and switch between swiftkey and swype depending on what I am doing. Got a few widgets set up that I wanted and am very happy with it. Longer I have it the more I like it. Just took some time to get everything set up. Worse part was my contact list of **** to high heaven when I first got it but that was more a side effect of the store transfering everything off my blackberry. I did not want them to copy the contact list as I was going to pull it off Google any how so I had to deal with doubles of everything but solved that with a factory reset and just imported in the contacts and everything was great.

Biggest thing I had to do was root the phone and then allowed side loading due to AT&T blocking it. Rooted, side loading turn on followed quickly by getting the Amazon App store and it has been great.
