That's exactly my point. It does what it's supposed to do but in no way is it the killer app that Google Maps is. Maybe GM came first and everything else seems like a cheap imitation but I can't ween myself away from GM. My only complaint about GM is the inability to export and import saved places
And Apple Maps was crap at first. They even recommended using Google Maps at one time...

Can someone here help me not fell so dumb? Why is Waze so much better than Google for traffic rerouting (and the extra perks like police alerts and road obstacles) when they’re owned by Google and Maps is their flagship preinstalled default? Also, Apple Maps advertises traffic rerouting based on road closures and delays but neither hold a candle to Waze in my experience. Am I missing something?
Waze is simply more aggressive about avoiding traffic, and its social features mean it has slightly more realtime information. Google Maps will tend to avoid sending you on detours through neighborhoods for example.

The police thing -- well the police absolutely hate it, and have been agitating to get it out of Waze for ages. It's still in Waze, but I doubt Google is inclined to poke the hornets nest by extending it to Google Maps.

As far as better -- in terms of driving directions to a specific known address with maximum traffic avoidance, Waze is impossible to beat. Google Maps does a vastly better job of knowing place / business names though, is much more useful for searching, and needless to say, Waze is useless for transit, walking, and biking directions.

I use both regularly depending on the situation.

Was visiting families half way across the country.
Used Apple maps to looks for some local delicacy and found some close by.
Used Google maps to find the same name? It pointed to somewhere half way across the globe, which is mind boggling. (Perhaps that place paid to get listed??)
Now, do I trust Google's AI? Not with a 10 foot pole...

Not sure if all of the police absolutely hate Waze - many of them probably like that people are slowing down around speed traps and driving more safely.

When is Apple Maps going to stop sending me to a random town named “Home” instead of my actual Home?

Exactly. And “sic” is generally placed in parentheses, not square brackets, nor does it require a period.

But getting back to the subject at hand, I use Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze. I often find the directions provided by Apple Maps best, though how well each app works is highly dependent on location. Still, I’m pleased to see all three continue to improve.
In Japan, google maps is far more useful, especially for public transport.
Which is a little funny, because iPhone is far and away more popular here.
Japanese locals either don’t need, or use dedicated transportation apps though. So they probably just use Apple Maps for general stuff.

They have ticketing quotas to meet. Public safety is secondary.

Apple Maps will never be as good as Google Maps simply because of the data that feeds google maps is and may always be more vast and rich than what Apple can provide. An Apple skin for gmaps tho. The real question is why is Siri non useable after all these years.

Don't get me started on Google Assistant vs Siri..

So is Google Maps going to read menus from restaurant websites and automatically incorporate it into a menu built into Google Maps?

GM already automatically categorizes users' photos of menus into a subsection of photos. Problem is the photo could be old and menu prices change but at the same time, it can serve as a good record of what an item used to cost

I see you can order through the Google Maps menu on some restaurants, it's very clunky and confusing though. Google could easily muscle in on Uber Eats at any time, probably as soon as the model becomes profitable.

I am getting so sick of “AI” buzzwords. Can this phase be over now, please? Just make things smart and don’t hide features behind AI marketing fluff.
“AI” is coming close to being the abbreviation for Actual Irritations 😁
I understand the potential of course, but yeah… the buzz around “AI, AI, AI, AI” shows similarities with the dotcom bubble of the 2000’s…

At this point, I’m kinda waiting for AI toilet paper.
No idea what that would look like, but with everything that’s just a slightly improved search or something that collects data to make assumptions being labeled “AI” we can’t be that far from it.

It does feel like the dot com bubble - or more recently how NFTs became THE thing to jump at.

Does anyone actually prefer Apple Maps over Google Maps?
I do. After my last two Android phones where the arrow on the map not once pointed where I was looking, I got a bit tired of Google maps.

I reset those phones, updated what could be updated (one of those phones was on its first and last Android version ootb) and it just didn’t work.

Apple Maps on the other hand has never had any issues like that for me. Mind you, I bought my first iPhone in 2020 so maybe I missed the worst of it.

I'm from Europe and I have yet to meet a human being that's using Apple Maps instead of Google Maps 🤣
👋🏻

I honestly think Google - both Maps and search are starting to completely lose their way. Both have been overrun by advertising led data vs useful data. I had to use Google Maps recently for a work project to share sets of saved locations between two accounts and it worked about 50% of the time, their shortened links sent to a browser are still buggy (in Safari) and the interface has become a mess also. Apple Maps is like a breath of fresh air and I hope they never clutter it up like Google has done.

Google Maps Sucks ®️
No, it does not. In my country Apple Maps doesnt have half of the businesses nor locations and as far as I know it's the situation in many countries and Apple Maps often leads you to wrong places. Google Maps doesn't.
I used Apple Maps a few days ago and I ended up in some ghetto. I had to switch to Google Maps and it showed me the directions through the city and with much less walking time.

Yeah it‘s like everywhere nowadays: ads and commercials taking over. But I guess people who use Xiaomis and such with os level baked in ads, just got used to it.
Maps and Youtube are the last remainig google apps on my phone and I hope to at least get rid of maps in the future. Apple could just buy Tom Tom and improve over night.

If Google Maps was a killer app, I would be using it. But it’s not and I’m not.
