Apple Maps never find restaurants that I know are present. Or if it does they are always the tiniest dot on the screen and when I zoom in, the dots seem to get smaller and never show the restaurant's name. Apple's AI for determining what I am interested in or what to prioritize in the UI is terrible. Google is much better here.

I'm guessing that if you are a San Francisco Apple employee clone, you might think Apple Maps is great, but I am not and I don't think Apple Maps is great outside of routing, which I use, but don't trust.

Too bad Apple Maps will never be able to offer this. Here is an AI based recommendation for 5 places to visit… oh wait: they’re all out of business or moved or have a wrong location on the map.

In Japan, google maps is far more useful, especially for public transport.
Which is a little funny, because iPhone is far and away more popular here.
Japanese locals either don’t need, or use dedicated transportation apps though. So they probably just use Apple Maps for general stuff.
In Japan, Google Maps is more used, but I find it's equal to Apple Maps in terms of public transport information. Agreed that a lot of people here turn to other providers for transport info. A lot of people here don't even realise that Apple Maps is a thing, and just add Google Maps, plus other things Google like their mail app and search app, and happily share their signed-in lives away with them....

AI without accurate data or ethical values creates problems. Lots of them. Ditched Google Maps years ago.

Apple Maps gets the job done, sometimes with style. While I was driving from Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery to Reims in northeast France, Apple Maps routed me on a scenic two-lane road through a sunlight speckled forest—efficient, beautiful, almost no other traffic. My map settings contained no restrictions, AFAIK. Apple Maps earlier routed me on larger main highways from Reims to Cierges-sous-Montfaucon and the cemetery.

Who needs intrusive Google Maps?

Actually, it should be in italics too....

For goodness sake..
Sic has no once-and-for-all style. It has many uses, not just grammar or spelling errors. It can be in parenthesis or brackets. Italic is optional. Usage depends on the person or the style guide in use. Sic should probably not have a period.

I have always used apple maps (from 2017 at least), and I'm perfectly happy with it.
I'm not a power user, as I literally only search for directions, and I like apple's simple and bloat-free interface.

Just a wild guess.....US only???? Were still waiting for the Dutch language in "translate "
But hey, it's been only 9 years, can't complain! We CAN choose however between 9 different forms of Chinese!

AI - the most overused term in tech for the past year. Are they just calling algorithims AI now?

I've been on a few MS Copilot presentations - they keep touting the benefits of their GAI, but can't really give a lot of specific real-world examples of how it could actually benefit specific companies. For heavy user input/request tasks yet, but its not like it's doing all your thinking for you (yet).
