This worked for me as well! Thank you rskattum!

Same combination of hardware/sofware as you: MBP mid 2015, Monterey 12.6 and Safari 16.0. I wonder if it will work for everyone else having this issue.
Thanks for that. Have done same. Now all OK.

I just updated to Monterey 12.6 (MacBook Pro mid 2015) and I am experiencing a funny problem with Google Maps on Safari. The site loads normally, but as soon as I start zooming in or out I see this:

View attachment 2060327

On other browsers, Google Maps seems to work fine.

Anybody?
Same problem; works with Firefox on the same machine. Tried fix above; now works fine.

I can confirm that this fixed my Google maps display. I had also noticed a glitch on the United.com website where 3D image navigation wasn't displaying properly. Unchecking 'Web GL via Metal' fixed that as well. Mid-2015 MacBook Pro.
I'm glad i came back here to check. This fixed my issue as well. Thanks!

This bug appears to be affecting older Macbooks with dual graphics. The problem occurs with the integrated graphics (Intel Iris). Gmaps works normally with the discrete graphics (AMD Radeon). I've sent feedback to Apple & Google, already. Lets hope they fix this one.

Settings > Battery > Automatic Graphics Switching unchecked. Gmaps becomes functional on Safari 16.0, but with considerably more heat.

In general on my old '15 Macbook Pro, I use Firefox for Gmaps because of responsiveness and lower heat production (less fan). Safari is my default browser, but it is sadly lacking in performance for Gmaps.

Do the current Apple Silicon Mac's that use Safari get good performance with the use of 3D Gmaps? Any discernible fan?? Probably time for a new computer!!
"Settings > Battery > Automatic Graphics Switching unchecked. Gmaps becomes functional on Safari 16.0"

This worked, thanks!

Hi all.
I had the same problem on my 2014 MacMini. Obviously no ability to change the battery settings. What worked for me was the one below from @Sven G . This seems to be a little more precise that the battery setting and less invasive than whole-of-system changes.
Disabling WebGL via Metal works, for the Google Maps in Safari glitch; in Safari, go to: Develop menu (enable it, if it’s not there) —> Experimental Features —> WebGL via Metal (untick).

My work around is using Chrome. I am running Safari version 16 on a Mac mini (Late 2014) using a Intel Iris 1536 MB graphics card and I get the blacked out screen with a jibberish line running through the middle whenusing Safari. Someone in the thread mentioned Chrome so I tried it and Google Maps is working for me there.

Problem has now emerged for me in Safari on a 2021 M1Max MacBook Pro. Working like it should in Chrome though.

The 3D view seems to have disappeared today. Works fine in Firefox.

It does work, but the better fix is to leave Auto Graphics Switching ON and switch off WebGL via Metal instead.

Disabling an experimental browser feature is surely preferable to switching off an important energy management function?

I'm on an M1 MacBook Pro and Google Maps won't go 3D for me since the update in Safari. I have to keep going to Google Chrome to get 3D, which is a pain because it's such a resource hog.

Hi
Discovered today that sometimes the Google Maps site reverts the page to the 2D version
Tried the link here 'Open maps in 3D mode' and it takes you to the 3D version so I just had to save that version instead. No idea why it defaulted to 2D must be something in picked up in Safari thinking it can't handle it?
Globe view is also available in this version.
Hope it works for you.

I posted a link that solves this for me. And you're right about the zooming it fixed that too.
Hi ! Thanks a lot for the link to force maps in 3d (webgl). It fixes the choppy zoom in/out on my Mac mini m1.
It seems that the "2d" version of google maps does not work properly (very bad performance on "street view" / "zoom in/out" and maps moving). Strange as it should require less GPU/CPU ressources.

Note that disabling "webgl via metal" did nothing, at least on M1 Mac :)

Hi, I wasn't able to get google street working on 3d map until I enabled option " GPU process: WebGL " in experimental features. Hope this helps. (Webgl via metal disabled)

ps: opening Maps in 3D Mode on safari used to prompt a warning : only light version can be used on this browser from Google map. All sorted out now, hope this helps someone !

Looks like the link to force maps in 3D mode works for me too. I do have to switch off automatic graphics switching or it gives the glitch problem, but I can live with that.
Alternatively, switch on Auto Switching, WebGL via Metal off and GPU Process WebGL on also works.
Thanks.
