The latest version of the Google Maps app for the iPhone includes hidden code-level references to Live Activities, according to MacRumors contributor Steve Moser. The feature remains in development and it is not yet functional in the app.

Live Activities will allow Google Maps users to view turn-by-turn directions and the ETA in a single live-updating Lock Screen notification, and in the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple is expected to expand the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 models, which should be unveiled on September 12.

Apple has allowed third-party iPhone apps to offer the feature since the release of iOS 16.1. In February, the Google Maps team announced that it would roll out Live Activities support "in the coming months," but the feature is still not available.

Too bad it’s been so slow. No brainers like pizza seem like extremely obvious but completely non existent use cases. Starbucks still hasn’t gotten theirs out despite showing a mockup at WWDC over 14 months ago. I also wish Apple would steal basic versions of Flighty and Carrot‘s live activities. The Carrot rain one is far less annoying than getting a notification it’s about to rain that you later have to go clear because it is only contextually relevant.

The ones that do exist like Lyft are brilliant. They actually wrote an interesting article outlining how the design process was carried out. Link for those interested.

Adaption of new iOS features is getting slower and slower. I still have not come across a single AppClip here for example

It doesn’t help that app clips don’t do a lot that you couldn’t just do with a website, plus them coming out during a period where they were practically useless. (Covid) I kind of expected them to be DOA and never recover, I think live activities have a lot of potential. Especially if they make them use continuity like widgets in a future iOS release, and doubly so if they put out a smart display to go along with that.

What does this mean? Turn by turn navigation in iOS 16 is not offered as a live activity. The navigation UI consumes the entire Lock Screen and relegates notifications and other Lock Screen functionality.
Yea, but if you go to your home screen — this goes into the dynamic island. At least that's how it is on ios17, was it not doing this in ios16?

Dynamic Island has been out for almost over a year. What's Google been doing all this time?
Google can’t do anything on a reasonable timescale. Automatic light/dark mode matching system theme in the YouTube app was in A/B testing for over 2 years before it came out, and even now it’s extremely buggy. I’ll get white text on white backgrounds or only part of it changing color scheme.

I’m genuinely shocked this only took them 11 months. This sluggishness and lack of QA is one of the reasons I ditched Android for iOS.

I never understood how so many people complained about a notch that’s nearly hidden on the top of an phone, but yet not a peep about the “massive” dynamic island sticking out even worse than a notch. Literally, folks were asking for all screen, no intrusion, and yet here we are with a blob in the way.

Dynamic Island has to be one of the best marketing tricks Apple has pulled off. Literally, silenced a world of notch haters with an even bigger notch.

Cutting jobs

and working on their A.I. to compete with the likes from OpenAI, Microsoft, etc. because how does Dynamic Island help with Alphabet's bottom line?

I never particularly minded the notch but the bit of screen above the pill makes it look much smaller even if it’s about the same size and extends further down. It’s like how the furniture in a room can make it look bigger or smaller than it really is.

The dynamic island pill doesn’t intrude on the content area any more than the notch did. Yes, the DI is a little taller than the notch, but when the DI came out, Apple increased the height of the overall screen by the same amount so there was no change in the area available for content.

Ah, I had forgotten about this. What’s the big deal then?
