Sigh, I just noticed they nerfed editing options. Why does Google do that? They nerfed options in Google Camera app as well (and most of it hasn't been added back yet).

That does indeed seem to be a common trend

It feels like they rebuild things from scratch, and since it's starting Over, don't implement all the features again, until later... Hopefully

You can actually upload original files but it will use your google drive storage, which has 15gb of free storage, 1tb of $9.99 a month, etc...

Just your normal smartphone photos. Considering next year's phones will all have 20MP+ cameras, 16MP is a bad limitation.

Download GeoSetter, it is by far the most powerful Image metadata tool there is.

Thanks, but that seems to be windows only, I'm on a mac. Know of any good mac apps?

I read you guys, but what if I want to store DSLR images there? I was hoping for a real photo storage solution, without restrictions. If images are modified, then that's a restriction. That is why I never upload images to instagram, pinterest and other nonsense services that modify images. I want my pictures in original as they came from the camera, with the same EXIF data, binary same.

I'm hoping that they will eventually take away that 16MP limit and will allow users to upload images without modifying them.

Here's another question. Is there a way to retrieve your images in mass? Or do you have to download them one by one? There also seems to be no map view of images... i.e. where the image was taken.

Choose original resolution and pay for the storage?

So I've never used google's photos app. On both iOS & Android are the pics saved to your device (thus taking up more storage) or are they stored on googles servers only and just there when you open the app and load them?

Google's servers and just there when you open the app. All it downloads initially are thumbnails. You have to choose to save to device if you want a picture that is on the server that is from another device.

So far, this is the best step forward by Google when it comes to photos.
Probably because it is a near clone of Apples photo app (but the api is more robust with animations)... And that isn't a bad thing. Photos needed to be disconnected from G+!

I downloaded the Google Photo app and the pics i took afterwards still go in G+ and i have it turned off. That is the biggest thing i dont like about G+. I dont want every picture i take to go in there automatically. I just finally disabled G+ since i dont use it and the Photos app still works without it.

G+ and Photo's app are just links to servers. They will likely turn off the G+ script links when they finally shut off G+ photos.

Ok guys. If you lament the loss of some editing functionality. Install Google SnapSeed and those missing editing features are back alongside some better ones.

Why did they abandon chromecast support? It was great to show slideshows from my Moto X.

??? I haven't looked into this. Can someone confirm this? Because this doesn't make any sense on Google's part?
I don't have a Chromecast to verify but I believe if you cast screen from device settings then it will display everything on your device so that would include photos.

Even if my photos are less than 16MP, do I have to use my Google Drive quota if I want to avoid compression?

I believe so. When I set up the Photos app on iOS, I was given 2 choices...either original, unaltered format that will utilize my allotment of Drive storage, or the altered format (if needed--photos less than 16MP or 1080 video will not be compressed or altered) with unlimited storage. If you want to unsure none of your photos are compressed, you have to choose the option that utilizes your quota, even if most of it won't actually be compressed.

I really like this but is there a way to edit the date on photos? I have some I uploaded that were taken on a camera with the date not set up correctly.

Edit the photos that are already uploaded?

I can only assume that if they are on the device (as well as cloud) once modified on the device the change would sync up to the cloud - however that could potentially mean duplicates. I think it may be worth a try and see if it works or doesn't - but there is no way of changing the exif data in the photos app itself or via the web view photos.google.com

This app is really pretty amazing. I can flip through every photo I've ever taken on my phone and it's as if it's stored on my phone, no lag. Also love the layout, very user-friendly.

I do have one question if anyone knows... I can text an image just fine but when I try to share an image to Facebook it gives a link like...

file:///var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application...

Will that actually post the image for someone else to see/click? I guess I could just try it but thought someone here might know.

Strange, when I share to Facebook it posts the image properly not just a link like that.

I've tried probably 15 different photos from different time frames and all give that sort of link. Weird. I'll maybe search around a bit and see if I can find out anything more.
