I've tried probably 15 different photos from different time frames and all give that sort of link. Weird. I'll maybe search around a bit and see if I can find out anything more.

Tried rebooting my phone, same thing. Can't find anything on Google. Will just have to use stock Photos app for FB sharing for now.

What device are you using?

I press share and select image and it instantly loads Facebook post

You can however delete the file:/ text and post to Facebook. It's clearly a bug in iOS version.

Yeah, iOS8 / 6 Plus here too. Don't know why I didn't think to just delete the link, duh! Thanks! :)

I'm hoping for some guidance. I installed this on my iPad and on my Android phone. On the Android phone, the app doesn't take up hardly any space and respects that the local photos are stored on the SD card. The app itself is reporting only like 90mb of storage space used on internal storage and a couple hundred on the sd card. However, on my iPad the app and data are using 2.2gb of storage and I really didn't have many photos on my iPad to begin with. I tried to look through all of the settings to see if there was something I could change, but no dice. I had to delete it because it extinguished all of my empty space on my iPad. Am I missing something? Is anyone else having similar issues?

I'll say this... I went ahead and backed up our external HD of all our family photos and videos onto my wife' Google account and she has been rediscovering things from our children when they were babies. She was in total awe how easy it was find everything and got so emotional seeing them that she wants to have another.

Google knocked it out of the park on this one.

Just read that they "wanted Photos to be what Gmail was to email."

That comparison makes such perfect sense. Google have absolutely SMASHED it.

Before I can compare it to gmail (which is excellent from an organisation point of view), I'd like to have some manual tagging ability and ability to edit photo metadata. But it does seem the one I'm most likely to stick with long term.

The faces feature is not available in my country yet. Are you able to assign a name to a face grouping?

No you can't assign names to faces, though I am reading reports that that capability is like one of the most requested feature for Google Photos.

I do think the search feature is clever, i was showing my elderly ladnlord yesterday this app as their icloud was full and they like the unlimited aspect, we synced some photos and amongst a hundred of them was this image of their family member with funky sunglasses on. So i typed sunglasses into the search box and bang, that picture came straight up. Thats some clever recognition going on in the background

If you let it create a collage or any of the other effects, will you still have an original copy of the pic/pictures?

Can anyone recommend a good photo metadata editor for Chrome? If I'm going to be using Google Photos, I want to be able to do this from Chrome rather than a local copy on my computer.

I checked the unlimited box but it gave me the 15 GB option for some reason. Same thing with teh Wifes phone. I dont know how it determined that.

I don't quite understand what you mean. Is it that you are surprised you were given a 15gb option in addition to unlimited, or is it that Google Photos forcing you onto the 15gb option even though you choose the unlimited one?

I went unlimited even though I have 200gb of google drive storage.

So presumably you are satisfied that the compression that Google is doing on the unlimited tier is only having a negligible impact on quality? Or maybe you have more than 200gb of photos.

Simply because most of my photos were already uploaded when it was part of Google +. So likely not going to re-upload and the compression doesn't seem to do too much damage for me. Indeed photos I've uploaded from my Lumia 930 which are 20mp - don't seem vastly different when they are scaled back to 16mp.

As for other devices - if they are under 16mp then there doesn't appear to be any additional compression - file size on my device and in the cloud seems same when I re-download the image from the cloud.

So yeah = I have no issue with it. The convenience of having all your photos in one place - out does any compression. I am not intending to upload RAW images from our Hasselblad (where each of its 50mp shots are around 100-150mb in size) and I doubt many professional users will be jumping at this service to share their images - they likely already have a service they use to do that anyway.

As a consumer service ..... its currently the easiest cross platform mac - pc - linux - android - iOS solution with decent multiplatfrom front end.

Surprised I was given 15 GB when I chose unlimited.

This does not happen for me (and is not the way Google describe it). For example just looked at a 13mp image that was originally 3 MB. After uploading to Google Photos it was compressed to 1.3 MB. The quality does not look any worse on a 24" monitor (to my untrained eye). But my slight concern is that certain types of photo might not stand up well to compression. I guess it's just something I will test on sample of different types before I upload all my photos.

I agree

Surprised I was given 15 GB when I chose unlimited.

It seems to me that the upload setting is on a per-uploader basis rather than per-account level.

So, if you wish, you can have your Android device & desktop client set to upload at high-quality (unlimited) whilst having your iOS device and web app to set to upload at original quality (15gb). Is it possible this explains what you are experiencing?

Same for me but not to the extent you experienced. I checked a handful of older images from my Photos library and Google seemed to be compressing 20-30% (ie. 1MB photo was 723KB in Google photos).

I had a 20MB photo compressed down to 2.2MB so who knows how their compression works.

Jeez that's massive difference?

Yeah it's about 20% tops for me too

Anyone figure out a way to detect/delete duplicate photos yet?

Also - do you know if it's possible to back up more than one iPhoto lib (need Photos library straight up don't work)? I have iPhoto library's on externals but don't want to have to copy master folders out of it fall of them
