exactly....I think Google implemented face unlocking tech better than Apple has....just MHO

I’ll agree once they fix the attention awareness, or lack thereof. That being said, all of demos I’ve seen show the Face Unlock to be super quick.

Do you have the option to not have it automatically bypass the lock screen? I actually like being able to wake my iPhone to see notifications and directly open the app from there.

So it's nearly bed time for me now and the Pixel battery has been pretty much as expected.
Bear in mind I've had no sim card in this phone all day (it's still in my iPhone) but it has been used to take loads of photos, direct me to a destination via Google maps (pre routed via WiFi) and for social media purposes.

Kinda expected but kinda disappointing.
Not sure how much id get out of 18% but don't think it would be huge amounts. Another hour?

I will pop my sim in and do a day at work with it at some point this week, but can't be bothered with the faff tonight.

I think all the buzz attention awareness has received to be quite amusing! I mean they replaced Fingerprint unlock with Face Unlock. Then all of a sudden unlocking your phone with your eyes closed became an thing! I mean you can unlock last years Pixel (fingerprint) with your eyes closed as well. Or someone could do it when you were sleeping.....
It is just something for people on internet forums to complain about.....
Google will issue a software update soon to fix attention awareness.

That's for the Pixel 4 right, not XL?

3,700mAh battery vs 2,800mAh, is a massive difference, yeah I get that the 4 has a lower res screen, but everything else is pretty much the same on both phones.

My 4 XL is actually giving me respectable battery life.

But Google really should have put a 3,500mAh battery in the Pixel 4, and a 4,300mAh in the 4 XL, sort of like what Samsung did this year on the Galaxy line. Really scratch my head on why they didn't?

I'm certainly not a logistics expert, but I wonder if that size wasn't available to Google. Maybe Samsung has some type of agreement with the battery maker. Any other reason just doesn't make sense to me.

Is it possible to get the battery/WiFi icon style on a phone other than the pixel? I love the look of them and wonder if that’s an option on nova?

Gotta say, the lift to wake, combined with Face Unlock is very cool, very fast, and to the home screen immediately.

Plus the smoothness of forced 90hz is so fluid and buttery.

And lastly the punchy deeper colors on this OLED screen look great.

Yes I'm really liking this Pixel 4 XL now.

I didn't thought about that, lift to wake plus face unlock, i just tried it and it works exactly like my Xs max but without the extra swipe! I guess I was too deep in this soli radar thing haha. But you need to turn off some sense motion features to get this working.

Good to see people enjoying their new Pixels. I'm having a fantastic time back on Snowball whose Playground photo app is a huge hit with the little ones! My husband had done some tech maintenance on Snowball (pixel 2) and I am once again getting really good battery life. There had been something gone awry before that had me thinking my battery was shot. But no it's fine. And updated on 10 it feels like a new phone.

The point of my little babble is I feel very comfortable now with the idea of trading the 3XL in for a 4 or 4XL some time from now when prices are in my comfort zone.

If you get a good one out of the batch at a comfortable price these little dudes are nice little phones.

I'm not sure the 4's deserve to go head to head with an iPhone 11 Pro or Pro max though. I'll leave that to you actual owners to tell me!

I’d definitely like your opinion about the 4/4 XL since I’m considering buying it when it’s heavily discounted. I’m hoping it won’t be a disappointment for you.

I disagree. Whether you or I personally are or aren’t concerned about someone else having the ability to unlock your phone, there are people who value the extra level of security the attention awareness provides. I’m pretty certain you’ve long advocated it’s better to have the feature/function and choose not to use it than not have it at all, no?

The flaws of a previous generation don’t justify the same flaws in this generation of phones. The implementation of attention aware secure FaceID on the iPhone removed those very flaws compared to previous iPhones. And I think that’s the basis of comparison people are making, not vs. last years Pixel but vs. other phones that also utilize a face unlock. Heck, even Flossy showed that Samsung’s admittedly less secure version on the latest Galaxy phones can require open eyes to work.

For Pixel 4 owners i recommend you watching this 3 min video on your Pixel's screen! Incredible how the screen gets bright when playing HDR content!
Make sure you choose 1080P/60/HDR resolution!

I disagree......no one including you were complaining about being able to unlock your Pixel while you were sleeping. It was never an issue for you before that you could unlock your Pixel 3 with your eyes closed. Where was this outrage from you this whole time about being able to unlock your Pixel 3 with your fingerprints while you were sleeping? It was never an issue until youtubers made it one.
It got them a LOT of clicks and views on their youtube channels and made them a lot of money.

Flaws of the previous version were never an issue until a new phone came out. Then as we all have seen in this thread....people love to complain about the new phones. They complain just to complain about a phone they were never going to get in the first place.

Then FaceID isn't that secure...the internet is full of people that beat it. Those examples have been posted here in the Alt Section and all over MR. You have seen them. Did you complain?

The whole Face Unlock issue is lot BS for nothing......the same issue exist on all phones that rely on fingerprint authentication. Google has a software enhancement coming soon and people can move onto something else to complain about.....

EDIT: How does this affect you? Are you going to turn off fingerprint authentication on your Pixel you have now? Are you going to go to PIN authentication only? I mean someone could use your fingerprint to unlock your phone at night while you are sleeping......

I get what you’re saying, but Face Unlock could provide an added layer of security that fingerprint biometrics never could. That’s the benefit of Face ID that Apple recognized and provided to their users. Why wouldn’t Google do the same? Speed/beating Apple matters more to Google than adding extra security. It speaks volumes about the company, and I say this as someone who is considering getting a Pixel. It’s okay to say that Google messed up. I do it all the time with Apple.

You’re missing the entire point. Why are you comparing this to a previous generation of phone—has absolutely nothing to do with older Pixels. The ability to unlock my Pixel with my fingerprint when I was sleeping was a ubiquitous problem to ALL smartphones that used fingerprint readers. I couldn’t buy another smartphone with a fingerprint reader that didn’t suffer from this issue. Everyone had to deal with this issue.

Thats not true for the Pixel 4. The current Face Unlock on the Pixel is less secure than Face Unlock in other devices I can buy right now because it lacks this awareness feature. And that’s objectively why the Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 is less secure to other Face Unlock on competing devices.

If I was concerned about someone being able to scan my face when I’m asleep (which I’m not), I wouldn’t get a Pixel 4 yet. If I was worried about access to a fp reader on my phone while I’m asleep or being forced to use it to unlock my phone, yes, I wouldn’t use fp authentication. If I was someone who traveled with any regularity to or lived in a country where I might be concerned about privacy, I absolutely wouldn’t use a Pixel 4. But I could consider using a Galaxy or iPhone because they provide an extra layer of protection.

Hope that helps clarify why this isn’t necessarily a trivial issue for some people.

sorry...i fail to see how it is relevant THIS year but not last year. Objectively no one has to use has to use any kind of face unlock or fingerprint authentication. There is always the PIN.......which seems pretty secure to me.

So you are not concerned about someone unlocking your Pixel 3 while you are sleeping using your fingerprint.BUT if you had Face Unlock.....it becomes an issue? Got it....

But somehow face unlock is less secure because it has the same limitation for NOW.

But will soon be remediated.....while your Pixel 3 will ALWAYS have this security flaw......

Seems like you should be advocating for everyone to switch to Face Unlock as it it will soon be a more secure way of protecting and authenticating to your phone.

Like i said.....just another thing for people to complain about that really is much ado about nothing.....
no one cares except internet forums like this or YouTubers looking for hits to their channel.....

Anyone switch from, or also have an iPhone 11 pro max that owns a Pixel 4 XL? I’m basically seeing the objective downsides would be battery life, video capabilities, and screen brightness in comparisons between the two. Your thoughts? Despite the lukewarm reviews, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Pixel lineup and I’m thinking of trying one out this year after skipping the 3 last year. 5-7 hours SOT is more than enough for me, still-photography is 90% of my camera use, and I still just like the “pixel look” for those shots... some of my favorite pictures came from a Pixel 2.

I enjoy both operating systems and I’d like to see what other improvements google made this year. I guess there’s no harm in trying it and returning it if I don’t like it but just curious what others have thought of it who have owned both phones.
