The iPad product range is littered with product variants like it‘s 1996 all over again. Didn’t they learn this lesson last time?

Apple should get rid of all iPads except the Air 3 and the Mini. Reinvest the tech of the others into those two. Dump the dud Pro range as those are outliers to gouge people with plenty of money to lose.

Just because you can't think of or muster any decent way to make use of the power and refinement of the iPad Pro line doesn't mean Apple should discontinue it... Especially when it sells like hot cakes.

I personally would love to stick with the Air 3, but the risk of bright spots, especially showing up after apple care expires is just too great. With the power under the hood of these newer model ipads, keeping them beyond 2 years is no problem at all, so I don't want to be forced into upgrading because of a screen defect.

Apple normally looks after its customers, even after warranty sometimes. Tell them how great your experience has been and how disappointed you are that it went wrong, reasonably expecting it to have lasted a little bit longer than it did due to Apple's build quality and design and how you were just about to consider buying a new Pro before this happened - and they'll go have a chat with the store manager about going the extra mile for you.

I returned the iPad Pro 11” last week because of dark corners. Went to my Apple store today and looked at 3 more and they all had dark corners. In every case both on the same side of the iPad when holding it in landscape. I don’t mean the subtle transition to darker corners like a direct array LCD TV, but a very pronounced step darker about 1” out from the corner. Absolutely ridiculous and I’m glad I didn’t buy another.

Camera (and home button) placement suggests otherwise.

Granted, I almost always use mine in landscape as well.
Yeah and the face id doesnt work as well in landscape mode. I dont think people will use the camera given they have a better options though...
I guess it isnt official so it wasnt well thought out but somebody in the development must be envisioning it as a landscape device, sooner or later... Pro 12.9 is really awkward to use in portrait as if it wasnt the intended use. Besides the recent pros dont have a home button...

Because the case I have is very bulky and heavy and I don’t want to use the iPad naked, today I got a Chinese replica of the old smart cases that Apple used to make for the air 1 and air 2.

It is not a perfect case in regard to fit and finish, but the price was 10 euros, so I was not expecting Apple quality.

Anyway, it is slim and light, fits good and all the holes line up good.

Now I’ll test it over the weekend to see if it improves the usage for me.

What site did you get this from?

By camera, I meant the front facing ones. We tend to prefer the iPad for FaceTime/Skype/Facebook video chat.

I can see the attraction of a Mini. My son-in-law has a similar-sized Kindle Fire. But the Mini would function too close to the size of my phone. I have a XR and never have desired a Mini, even when I had 4.7” iPhones. A XS Max is even closer to the Mini.

My 10.5” iPad Pro is about perfect tablet-wise for me, and the 11” would be even better, a nice size in between my XR and 15” MBP.

And you’re right about the size of the case. A nice thin one makes using a regular-sized iPad easier, though I usually use my 10.5 with the Smart Keyboard, handier than my MBP when I don’t need to do heavier computing.

As you give the 11” more time, gdourado, I suspect you’ll grow more attached to it. Hope you the best with it.

My phone is a XS Max and the mini is night and day difference in usability.
The Max is 6.5 diagonal, but the aspect ratio is 19.5:9.
The iPad mini is 7.9 but with a proportion of 4:3.
That makes a huge difference in display area.

Here is a picture I took of my XS Max on top of my mini:

I loved the mini 4 so much I managed to sell it for a really good price and got a mini 5.
Now with the mini 5, the pro 11 is just collecting dust.
The mini is the perfect size and weight tablet!

Hello,
So yesterday I got an iPad Pro 11.
The iPad is a beast! Performance is fast as hell, Face ID is just as great as on my XS Max and I love it.
Pro motion is a whole new revelation and a game changer for browsing. Also, the speakers are pretty sick!
So what is the problem? It’s the formfactor...
I am just not feeling it as comfortable and practical as my old mini 4.
The mini 4 is great to carry around the house, tomou-se while standing, to thumb type on forums and reddit.
The Pro not so much.
I don’t find myself reaching for it as much as I reach for my mini.
Granted I still have a bulky case on the pro, as it was the only one that was in stock and I really didn’t want to bring it home without a case, but still...
The mini has a screen protector and the silicone case and Smart Cover combo and while at home I never use the Smart Cover. Just the silicone case to be able to place the iPad on any surface without worry.
I might get a similar tpu back cover for the pro to try it out.

Another thing... is the pro a different aspect ratio? I am not feeling it as comfortable to browse in portrait orientation as the mini.

Anyway, this is my first impressions on the pro.
Here are them both:

My take is the bigger the screen, the better. But I’m also over 50 and my vision isn’t what it was in the past. I find browsing, typing and other tasks like playing boardgames, are far more enjoyable on the 12.9” iPad.

I believe that's why Apple could possibly be selling multiple sizes! I know, shocking, but people have different needs and preferences :)

For my use the Mini makes no sense as I have a large phone that I can use for all instances where I would use the Mini, and I enjoy my 12.9. If you like the Mini form factor, by all means, stick with that, no reason to be spending $$ on something that will sit on a shelf most of the time. My brother swears by his iPhone SE and Mini and takes them everywhere.

Same. Portrait on a tablet feels wrong.

I think the iPad aspect ratio is actually perfect for portrait. I do a ton of book and PDF reading on mine, and it's always portrait. Surfing the web in portrait can be great too, depending on the site. It's wide enough to show the whole content easily but you can see a lot more vertically.

Every iPad I have owned I have held in portrait orientation. Landscape just feels awkward for me. Now I own the 12.9 pro and I am slowly and reluctantly finding landscape is the more convenient with this size. I still find it awkward & irritating. It’s not comfortable for me as I’m so used to portrait on the 10.5 or 9.7. It was so easy laying in bed to hold one handed and flinging my hand out to the side if something on TV caught my attention or someone speaking to me etc. It’s the little things that make life less complicated and the 12.9 was probably an impulsive afterthought and likely the wrong choice for my needs.

For anyone who does any amount of reading they are likely going to want to hold the iPad in portrait. The aspect ratio resembles a book. Ever read a book on its side?

Fiction, I always read in 2-column landscape mode on iPad 9.7" or bigger. In that orientation, it's similar to two 6" Kindles side by side.

I just traded back down to the 11in. It’s the perfect form factor for me. The 12.9 was gorgeous but too big to carry around for my use case

Always read books and mags in portrait, everything else in landscape.
I read epubs in portrait but pdf (textbooks and magazines) in landscape and scroll all the way down. It's way too awkward for me to read pdfs in portrait since the fonts are too tiny. I'd say about 99% of my iPad usage is in landscape. I'm using iPad 2018 though.

I do think if I get a 12.9, I'd still use it mostly in landscape because if I have a choice, I'd rather have two-page spread for reading just like a real novel.

Man this hits the nail on the head in some ways

Returned my
11” iPad Pro. Didn’t like no headphone jack, Face ID on a tablet, or usb-c even I have tons of lighting cables. Won’t be ready to seriously transition until iPhones are usb-c standard then I’ll be forced to start phasing out my usb-c to Lightning’s

LOVE my mini5, headphone jack, Touch ID gen2, p3 screen, bezels to hold onto, and such a condensed form factor

The on screen keyboard is awkward too. I can’t deal with more than 9.7

Even 10.5 in a light trial run was awkward to me in landscape

The value is incredible too. Half the price of the base 11” iPad Pro for mini5
