Ah congratulations in getting your new MB. The fans are indeed quiet but try doing a hardware test or playing CoD2 on it and the fans will run at full speed (6200RPM).

true, after 30 seconds of yes>/dev/null my temp rose to 75-80 degrees and the fan start blowing at 5800. I've stop both terminal and the temp whent down very rapidly. But without any demanding task, it's running between 50 and 60 and the fan is quiet.

I'm not shure if this rapid increase in temperature is normal on a laptop ?

anyway, right now, I'm really happy with it :D The first day is the best one ;)

Do any of you new mac owners have a slight gap between where the glossy casing meets the off white interior? (when looking from the side)

Finally Back to Mac

It's been about 10 years since I've owned a Mac (last was an 8500!), and I'm eagerly awaiting returning to the fold with my MBP. I've read the posts about display issues, and hope I win the display lottery, but this won't deter me. I'm just excited to finally get back to using a Mac as my primary system!

Not sure what you mean actually. My C2D has a about a millimetre all around - it's more framed by the off white interior - by design - looking from atop.

Now...from the side - I'm not sure what you mean

Does anyone know if I was to purchase a C2D MacBook at an Apple Store, would they be able to configure it with 2GB of ram for me? Or are only stock MacBooks sold in store?

Thanks!

Store RAM Upgrade Is Twice The Price Of An Online Order

Does anyone know if I was to purchase a C2D MacBook at an Apple Store, would they be able to configure it with 2GB of ram for me? Or are only stock MacBooks sold in store?
Problem is at the store they charge twice that of the mail order price. So you're much better off ordering it with 2GB installed at the factory. It's gonna come fast with free shipping. You'll still have it in a only few days. DO NOT pay for expedited shipping. It will not get to you any faster than the free kind. ;)

Uneven brightness

So having a gradient on your screen (instead of a solid color) is okay according to apple?

I bought my macbook c2d last week, i got it tuesday, and today i went to the apple store to get it looked at.

The top of the screen is normal, but the bottom 50-55% is lighter than the top, so light that the taskbar is washed out. you can still see it and use it but i expected better from apple.

I thought i had a bad screen, so i took it in to get it looked at, but then they showed me two other macbooks and they have the same "problem".

I know apple can use great screens on their products, I own a 23" ACD and love it! I checked over 30 other monitors and it was the ONLY ONE that had even brightness. (i did not check the dell or samsunf 24" ers, but if i was gonna spend 800+ dollars i might as well get the best looking one.)

This is my very first mac computer and am very disheartened.

Are your guys'/gals' mbs the same?

--------------------

P.S. - on the brightside (or slightly dim side) my macbook is quiet and cool, the only time i was able to hear the fan was wednesday night at school when i was working the hell out of it in photoshop.

Gap Between Screen And Keys Is The Correct Thing Nick

Do any of you new mac owners have a slight gap between where the glossy casing meets the off white interior? (when looking from the side)
That would be a good thing. You don't want the screen bumping up against the keys nick. If it did, the keys would leave scratches/imprints on the screen.

I think the problem is that the screen is very sensitive to viewing angles. I've taken pictures of my screen, and it's very hard to get it evenly exposed. Compare, for example, the startup picture and the desktop pictures (the desktop with the gray background is solid, not a gradient).

Ahh .. well that about the seals the deal for me! I was heavily considering just ordering it online, but I don't like the idea of my brand new MacBook sitting on my front porch all day in plain view of my neighbors (apartment life, sheesh). But from what I've read, Fedex will require me to sign for it, so I'll just have to swing by the Fedex location and pick it up.

Thanks for the suggestion and your help! Been a PC nerd for a quite awhile and I'm finally taking the jump to Mac. It'll be nice for have small yet powerful laptop when I go back for the masters degree.

Call 1800-Go-FedEx And Ask Them To Hold For PickUp Instead Of Deliver

You can also call FedEx in advance of the day it is to be delivered, give them your tracking number, and they will hold it for you at the depot and never put it on the truck. One person here disputed this, but then someone else verified my experience that FedEx has also done this for them. So it must be an inconsistent policy. It always works for me. So I don't understand why someone here said a first attempt at delivery must precede Hold For PickUp. I do not believe that is the case.

Call 1800-Go-FedEx and ask them for this service and I think you will most likely get it. Simply tell them the truth, that you do not want a package delivered to your apartment building when you know you will not be there and would they please simply hold for pickup at the depot. I am 99% sure they will be glad to accomidate you.

That's Not A Gap. It's A Manufacturing DEFECT. Should Never Have Passed Inspection

here is a link to the type of gap i'm talking about. mine is not to this extreme. prob only a milimeter if that. not sure how widespread this is.

That's completely different than what I thought you meant. I would phone Applecare to arrange for a repair or exchange. That is not a Gap it's a manufacturing DEFECT that shouldn't have gotten past the inspector.

stop analyzing everything so much and just enjoy!

honestly, people should just chill out and enjoy their apple's for what they are. yes, there will be flaws (that is just the case now that apple is so poplular and their quantities have increased 3 fold) but i think of the alternative (PC's) and i am willing to deal w/ them.

they are great machines. ;)

Im a newbie and this is my first mac.

I placed my order last night for the Black Macbook 120gb/1gb ram (no upgrades)

Just checked apple and noticed my data has been transimtted to fedex this morning at 9:42am. Barely even 12 hours after I placed my order! My expected delivery when i placed the order was 11/20 - 11/24.

Looks like it is on time, im pumped to get it. I have played around with a few of my co-workers macs but cant wait to have my OWN!

Any idea how long after the data is transmitted I will get a definate date?

Thank you.

Did you pre-sign or have a release?

If you dont they will leave a failed attempt, you can call and have it be held at the depot. But if you want to get it quicker def call fedex anf have them hold it. Like someone replied, just tell them you will not be homw and do not feel comfortable with someone either leaving or delyaing the shipment any longer. They are pretty flexible.

hmmm, apparently this shipment is going from Alaska to Memphis TN, then either Toronto or Winnipeg to clear customs, and then back to western Canada... WTF?!

Apple saves money by doing this those cheap bastards!

:( I was hoping it'll come straight to Vancouver.....
