Just fitted a Sapphire Radeon RX 590 8GB Pulse Graphics Card into my MacPro5,1

2 x 2.4 E5645
96GB RAM
1TB HDD

(Pre upgrade specs).

Currently seeing the following benchmark scores and I wanted to check with posters here if they're inline with what is expected, if the first page Wiki had benchmark scores from each GPU with the same app this might help, or, suggestions on which tools to best get the most accurate results.

Just wanted to note that a Gigabit RX 560 purchased by a friend required a 6-pin power connection to function. My earlier, but similar Gigabyte RX 460 does not require power other than that provided by PCIe.

This wiki info (unreadable in dark mode) about RX 4x0 cards is not correct:

The card can be flashed with RX 5x0 firmware to support Metal 2.

I use RX 470 (4 GB Sapphire Platinum edition, 3x DP, 1x HDMI) and Metal 2 is supported OOTB in Mojave. No flash needed, so most probably for 460 and 480 cards.

For info, openCL test

I apologize for not reading through all 10 pages, so maybe this has been answered.

The first post states that the RX 580 and 590 cards come in 2 8pin and 8pin + 6pin configurations and that additional power is recommended. But now there are single 8 Pin versions of the Saphire Pulse 580 and 590.

Would additional power still be recommended or would a dual 6 Pin to 8Pin adapter and/or an EVGA Powerlink be enough?

Thanks!

AFAIK, the Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB has been single 8-PIN on the GPU since release. Have never personally seen any version of the Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB with another configuration. The majority of RX 580 GPUs are also single 8-PIN on the GPU.

Single 8-PIN can easily be powered internally in MP5,1/MP4,1 by using DUAL MINI 6-PIN to standard single 8-PIN cables.

Been using this one with an RX 580 (and GTX 1080):

But they are much more widely available on Amazon now.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good DVD bay power supply? Or for a viable external secondary power supply?

I currently have an nVidia GTX 1070 8GB from MVC in my cMP5,1 and I love this card, but of course I cannot run Mojave. I am considering a new AMD card of equal or better performance, but any such card will need additional power.

I'm trying to find a reasonably plug and play solution that doesn't require modifying the Mac, so a DVD bay power supply would be ideal. All of my searches for these have found only older equipment that is no longer for sale.

Many thanks!

An RX580 pulse will not need additional power, just dual mini 6 pin to 8 pin on the gpu.

For MacOS use, the RX580 is not anywhere near the performance hit vs. GTX10XX series that many claim. Add in the fact it requires NVIDIA Web Drivers and is High Sierra limited, and it’s even less of a hit.

I’ve run the same video test benchmarks in Mojave with RX580 and GTX 1080 FE with High Sierra with several software apps and it’s the same, if not better with RX580. The Metal performance alone is worth it, if your apps can use it. Metal performance has improved in latest versions of Mojave.

CUDA is an entirely different story. You’re stuck on High Sierra at max anyway.

Do I wish I could use the GTX 1080 in Mojave? Yes, but the RX580 is a suitable (Apple approved) replacement.

If you’re primarily in Windows, that changes your options.

Okay, I'm persuaded! These cards are so inexpensive that I can easily pick one up to test in my setup. I do run Windows natively on this machine, but Windows graphics performance is less important for me.

I will report back.

Thanks, guys. :)

I can confirm that the RX 580 in macOS with metal is better than a GTX Titan X: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-2019-and-gaming.2185465/page-3#post-27468661

For anyone experiencing issues with Catalina, read through this report. They speculate an issue with Polaris drivers. If that's the case, it would impact more than eGPU. There's been a recent string of reports of GPUs with "issues" that cannot easily be troubleshooted with recent updates.

Amazing list! Any chance of adding the Radeon Pro WX series to the list? I'm having trouble finding this information but supposedly they're compatible.

I just experimented with installing Catalina on a cMP 5,1 with a MVC-flashed GTX 780 and the display port does not seem to work.

What's surprising is that I am now seeing a boot screen whilst connected via the HDMI port on the GPU to a "4K" monitor. The 4K monitor is a 27" LG 27UK850 but is recognized in Catalina as a 30.5"

Guess I'll have to live with 30 hertz until either MVC launches the Vega 56 or I get a good deal on the 5700XT.

Can someone confirm if they are seeing the boot screen on a MVC-flashed Nvidia card connected using HDMI to a "4K" display?

I am really surprised that I have such support and am able to see the boot screen on a 4K display. I thought this was only possible on a non-4K display.

Has anyone tried Radeon Pro Duo 32 GB? I mean this one:
I'm think I would like to buy one, but not sure if it works in cMP.

Dual GPU cards were always poorly supported with macOS, maybe after MP7,1 arrives this will improve. Power usage will be an issue, 250W TDP.

Thank you. So maybe Radeon VII would be a better solution? I'm aware of power consumption and already did the PIXLAS mod ;)
Radeon VII is the king of compute usage with MP5,1, scores a lot better than RX 5700XT when used for rendering/encoding. Since you already have Pixla's mod, it's just a factor of cost/benefit.

Btw, even Vega 64 have better compute scores than RX 5700XT, so this one you can forget.
