No, you do not NEED a flashed RX 580. Standard RX 580's work out of the box with Mojave and are recommended by Apple, specifically the Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208898

These specific third-party graphics cards are Metal-capable and compatible with macOS Mojave on Mac Pro (Mid 2010) and Mac Pro (Mid 2012):
  • MSI Gaming Radeon RX 560 128-bit 4GB GDRR5
  • SAPPHIRE Radeon PULSE RX 580 8GB GDDR5
  • SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition
  • NVIDIA Quadro K5000 for Mac
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition

Does it have boot screen?

See the FIRST POST in this same thread:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/gpu-compatibility-list-for-cmp.2174600/

"No GPU besides original Apple Mac Pro GPUs from 2008 to 2012 (HD 2600XT, 8800GT, Quadro FX 5600, GT120, HD 4870/5770/5870) or 3rd party Mac EFI cards like Sapphire HD 7950 Mac Edition, eVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, NVIDIA Quadro 4000/K5000 or self-flashed/MVC flashed cards have what are usually called boot screens - this is not the correct term and the correct denomination is pre-boot configuration support."

I've just received two Mac Pro 3.1's with 8800 GT's. reading the list here, the GTX 680 is most recommended, so I'm on the hunt, but want to check and see if there would be any problems if I install Catalina using the tools from dosdude?

also, can anyone advise what the cons of running a GPU that doesn't allow for boot screen? I have a Gigabyte 970 I could try...says the PC models work with no boot screen. does that mean I see no post but will see the OS logo and then sign in? I'm fairly new to Mac OS', so if someone can break down what that means exactly, it would be appreciated.

@Friendly i have not had boot screen for maybe 5 years and have not needed it for 5 years.
keep the old GPU's for backups (i still have my original GT120 and have used it once or twice for trouble shooting )

have used a GTX660 (from when that was new) GTX 770 and a RX 580 all PC cards with no boot display.

for a GTX 970 you will need to install the NVIDIA web drivers i think & wont work on every version of osx

I Have a asus GTX660-TI-DC2-2GD5 with the gk104 procesor. I read that this card with this procesor can work with Mojave as egpu and catalina . I tried with High Sierra and Mojave and always show glitches. I'm using a mcp 3.1 with dosdude hacks. My question is if there are any form to get it working with high sierra or later in my mcp 3.1. Thanks
Are you seeing little black boxes from time to time in finder? If so that’s normal. That’s just how compatible Nvidia is these days.

Hi there, at the end I have buy a pc evga gtx 680 ( the same shape that the mac edition ). But I continue with glitches with High sierra, like the gtx 660ti.
If I plug the pc 8800 gts or the og mac gt120 the glitches dissapear, but if I plug the 680 the glitches come back.
My question is if the gtx 680 need to have installed the nvidia and cuda drivers, or not?

Has anyone used or successfully tested a Quadro M2000 or a Quadro M4000? Both are single slot, Maxwell architecture and I understand that they will not work in MOJAVE but is there any reason they wouldn't work in earlier builds when 'webdrivers' are installed..?

M2000 works fine with webdrivers

I saw that in the first post of this tread there's some info that I thing it's not correct.

I have a mac pro 3.1 and one mac pro 1 who are working with the pc 8800gts ootb without flash.
They work with mac pro 1.1 el capitan and before sistems.
And they work with mac pro 3.1 el capitan, high sierra and mojave.

They give me better stability than the gtx 660 and 680 at the moment

7. Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512 Mb
Performance: 44% RPI.
Power consumption: 6 pins, very hot.
Outs: two DL-DVI.
Compatibility: DirectX 10.0, OpenGL 3.3, CUDA 1.0. MACos 10.5.2 - 10.11.x.
Other: 32 bit or 64 bit EFI, occupies 1 slot. The first in time mac card that support CUDA. There is "mac edition" of cards.
Unflashed (PC version): doesn't work; can be flashed.

hay your having problems with your GTX 680, can you give some more info?
do you have all the power cables plugged in?
have you tested the card in a second computer?
have you given the card a visual check, is it clean and dust free, fan spins freely?
do you have windows installed on the MP or a second computer you can test it with?

what kind of glitches do you have?

is the card new to you? did it always glitch or is it a new problem?

At the end it works perfect! I just made a zero high sierra and mojave install and it works perfect with both mac os. I have a very bad internet conection so I think that the past hs install was damaged.

I can confirm that the gtx 660ti does glitches, and the pc 8800 gts works perfect.

in the past there has been problems with the GTX 660 TI but it may also just be age of the card from needing to be cleaned or re pasted to random damage.

you can try the nvidia drivers

what are the glitches?

Hi, the gtx 660ti it's very clean and recently pasted, right now is working in my mac pro 1 with el capitan very well.
I think that all this thread from another website about the 660 problems in high sierra it's true. They said that the gtx 660 will not work on hs or newest mac os.
Right now I have the gtx 680 without nvidia drivers in the cmp 3.1 + 32gb ram + hs ( thinking to install mojave ), and the gtx 660ti without nvidia drivers in the cmp 1 + 8gb ram + el capitan. Everything working.
Thanks to everybody from this forum :)

Hello,

Which VGA is the cheapest one offering Mojave support and 4K encoding for use with final cut pro and premiere?

Thanks in advance?

None that are native OOTB. You'll need to modify to enable SOME 4K/HEVC options with hardware acceleration.
