Thank you for your response.

I will order the right capacitor and replace the wrong one.

I actually have TWO Macbook Pro 6,2 with the same problem.
One is "fixed" with the kext, I did not replace the capacitor yet.
As for the other one (capacitor replaced), the "kext fix" works partially : the MBP works better than before, but still crashes when I open a photo in Photos, for example.
Did you edit the kext or used one my already edited (https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...010-whats-the-best-fix.1890097/#post-23312990)?
If you edited, try to use one of mine..
Check: About this Mac -> System report -> (Software) Extensions, if AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext was loaded. This is very important, only work if is loaded.. If not, check step by step and repeat all process again.
like this:

I edited the kext myself (disabled the SIP, edited the kext in TextWrangler, then installed it with Kext Drop).

Yes the kext is in the list. It says : version 110.23.11, loaded : YES.

Also could you please confirm this one is ok :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAPACITOR...543806?hash=item5af270edbe:g:7BsAAOxyM89Sa79q
mystery, if the values are same into plist, should was working correctly. If you want, can try one my edited.
Well, this capacitor is right!
good luck.
:)

I am happy to of found this thread!!! it has brightened MY DAYS TO COME!!!:) will most certainly also go for the permanent fix with cap change, but should try the soft fix that GURU FABIOROBERTO first as suggested to reconfirm (what I suppose doesn't need confirmations, but what the heck)... just to check, as I didn't find a specific version of the altered kext in the post where in the end you have a bunch of them, what version should I use for the OSX 10.10.5 that I am on now.. ?how is the file system specific.. if its a simple add/delete row in the kext, can do that myself, just a little pointer needed.. thanks in advance..

UPD1 or... "just update to Sierra..." and go from there option..))
UPD2 ohh well.. I am impatient.. no replies.. will go for UPD1 option...)))
UPD3.. no... stop!!... but.. if I wont be able to change the kext because of immediate reboots..brrrr.. stuck ((( will wait for a reply on the "kext for 10.10.5"...and dance from there..

Read my old posts to know how to install.

Grazie mile!! :) will try it asap.. one of my friends has the same 6.2 MBP, same issue.. obviously.. :) but.. he is on Sierra already.. and it seems he is not the only one having problems FINDING TERMINAL in Recovery mode!! its just not there, all other options besides language.. and the window with different other options.. has tried starting Disk Utility.. quitting it.. moving the cursor around.. rebooting several times.. still.. top menu stays unchanged.. but..luckily.. still on Yose here..so.. its not my issue..:) and prob not his.. just Sierras.. he is trying diff USB installs now to start up to get terminal working with any of them...but as said, its just a note here.. that if someone has that issue, he isn't the only one.. upon googling the issue, theres many more with same luck..

Yes it is a big problem, you can't have a Terminal when booting in Recovery mode with this model of Macbook Pro.

All is stuck to Language Chooser.

The solution is to create an install bootable USB stick and boot up from it.

Also for all you who will use the edited kext fix, remember that ANY Apple software update (for example, iTunes) will reactivate the SIP, thus preventing the edited kext to load.
That means you need to disable the SIP after any Apple software update...

TX Bruno, also a good reminder to put in the first post imho! :)
so best to switch the Auto updates off.. there was an option for it somewhere I think ...

P.S just talked to him, he got through the process with Captain install.. and so far so good.. "normal flight" he said.. ))
but for me, I just need to test the "evidence".. and get welding ))))) well.. order the microcapa first.. 3-5wks wait here stated..

after restarting with Cmd + R like 10 times now , seems that I am out of lucky strikes.. csrutil disable.. csrutil status.. all results in : command not found in terminal.. upon googling, tried also holding Option on reboot to get to Recovery HD, its not listed either.. although in terminal Diskutil list - lists also a Recovery HD .. I am stumped.. (( got a fresh Sierra, created a USB stick with the install, and now theres no Terminal.. ))))) like a crow on a hot bitumen roof.. trying to get free.. nose stuck, tail free, tail free, nose stuck.. (( seems that I need to do a backup, and make a clean install of smth.. ((((and then play from there.. (( or is there another option..

update.. google google.. trying the Recovery Partition Creator 4.0 script first now.. redownloading Yosemite to use it for the creation..
update.. upon running the script, Creation Successful.. yet , reboot with Option key - Recovery HD not there, also CMD + R --->Terminal---> csrutil disable - command not found.. bugger..
so decided just to try to "drop the kext" anyways.. message "success".. and now there are two of the kext in Extensions.. the latter of course with 2 attached to it.. Console says State set from 2 to 2.. and computer is not restarting upon the "usual maneuvers".. hmmm.. what now..? just forget abt all this, wait for the capacitor and do the soldering? :)

Hi,

You are using Yosemite, right ?

There is no SIP in Yosemite, it came with El Capitan.

That's why csrutil says command not found.

Don't care about the SIP, you don't have it...

aaaaa.. bugger.. yes, 10.10.5, Yosemite!)) NOONE TOLD me abt missing SIP))) and I have lost all my hair!! ))))) so.. for me then, to do what? delete the original now from Extensions.. and rename the new one to original- now its with a 2 to it.. ?

update.. deleted the original from Extensions (will keep it safe, because I need to put it back once the new capacitor has been soldered.. CORRECT?!?), now just one kext in list.. rebooted.. loaded ok, NO REBOOTING.. will try now the "usual suspects of kernel panics"..
-console shows nothing about gfx at all

Copy the 2 kext from Extensions to a folder, to keep them just in case.

Delete the 2 from Extensions.

Use Kextdrop to install the edited kext.
You NEED to use it, copying the kext manually would NOT work because the kext would not have the right permissions.

Restart the machine.

Launch System Report, go to Software / Extensions, check that the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement is loaded.

Done exactly that.. result:

so ... error code.. -67030... but.. all is working.. no restarts.. no panics.. gfxCardstatus is on dynamic switching, before, at this option, it was just restarting randomly.. so I suppose thats it? done for now..? :)

"Signature Validation Errors: Kext signature validation error code -67030" is normal (the kext has been modified and is no longer signed by Apple).

Done ? Hopefully yes.....:)

P.S if you see fabioroberto before me, tell him, that the part about "no need for SIP manipulations in Terminal" could really be added to the 1st page for those who are still also on Yosemite :) could of spared a lot of time...

This forum provided the answers I wanted! I ordered the new capacitor; while in the online ordering mode ... I upgraded my olds tools! :D Replaced the faulty cap and now ... I am enjoying my MacbookPro6,2 again! Thanks to Louis and his videos. Since I had everything removed from the laptop enclosures ... I also cleaned all the original thermal paste mess Apple created. :)

Thanks guys for the parts information from Digikey!

Which replacement cap did you use ?

I ordered:
both were mentioned in this forum. I didn't know which way I was leaning towards (Tantalum or Aluminum Poly). So like some folks on this forum, I ordered both types. I did end up using the Aluminum Polymer Cap. Someone on this forum mentioned a part that was the same size as the original but Ceramic based. Digikey didn't have any inventory.
