Thanks @fabioroberto for the kext fix. I was planning to upgrade to 2016 15" but this allows me to wait for next update. Ideally i want to have the hardware fix but I have no experience with soldering. Does anyone know of a repair shop in London that would be able to do this for a reasonable price?

Thanks

Thank you very much! The exchange of this capacitor solved the problem of my MacBook Pro 15 inch Mid 2010. Now I have again the external 24 inch display working! Great!!!

Had the same issues with my 15-inch Mid 2010 machine. The repair extension program had since expired and because the machine had entered vintage status, replacement parts were no longer available.

I'd already bought soldering tools to repair a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro, so I decided to have a shot at changing the troubled capacitor. Problem solved. Not the easiest repair in the world but it would be a straightforward job for an electronics repairer or anyone skilled with a soldering iron.

This would be the better solution for anyone that isn't content with a temporary software fix, boots between multiple operating systems or needs the use of the higher powered graphics hardware.

I had tried the newer version and couldn't get it to use just the Intel GPU, this older version seems to be the ticket—thanks for that info. I had talked to Apple and a recommended Seattle area repair shop, both had suggested throwing in the towel. This may give my old MBP enough life that I can better plan to replace it.

Only way to fix Mac Book Pro 15 Mid 2010 by software is older

gfxCardStatus1.8.1(download site: https://software.com/mac/apps/gfxcardstatus/1.8.1 or whenever you find it)
don't try newer versions !!!! it will no work. Then install gfxCardStatus1.8.1. in menu check mark: Intel Only. in preferences, check mark:Load gfx.. at startup. and. Restore last used mode at startup
It will never shutdown but it will never use nvidia graphic card

I applied the kext fix a week ago and have not had a GPU panic since. This is great news!

Although I have noticed an increase in bootup time now, that's acceptable over the GPU kernel panics. At this point, I think a memory increase and an ssd upgrade will keep my MBP humming along for another year or two, until Apple can provide us more inspiring MBP options over their disappointing 2016 iteration.

Thank you @fabioroberto for your solution!

Great!:)

Like a bozo i allowed my MBP to update to 10.12.2 and now i'm having kernel panics again. Does it need a new Kext file or do i need to reapply the previous one?
thanks for the help Fabio..you've been invaluable!

First check if SIP is disabled (terminal -> csrutil status). If enabled, disable again. After, delete the .kext (Extensions folder), install the new edited kext using the app (like the Kext Drop for exemple), reboot. Check if the kext is loaded and test. Reset PRAM to invalidate previous cache, is recommended.

Hi,

This is normal if you made a NVRAM reset.

Go to System Preferences / Startup Disk, and select your hard drive as startup disk again.

Gentlemen, would this work on MBP's from 2011-12-13 ?!
The KEXT fix or the capacitor ?

Hi guys! i'm writing from Italy, recently i've bought this macbook: 15" 2.4GHz i5 with nvidia gt330m with 256 mb vram id 0x0a29.
I've bought from second hand, for now i'm using it with gfxCardStatus always putted on integrated only and with that everything is ok.
But reading this thread i've decided to replace that capacitor.
So can anyone tell me for my laptop which is the best capacitor that i can find to replace that one who failed?
I mean what kind of capacitor can i use, ceramic, electrolytic, polymer..? or is it indifferent and the only spec requested are 330µF on 2V ?

I was thinking to buy this one http://it.farnell.com/rubycon/2swz3...smd/dp/2346112?MER=bn_browse_3TP_LastViewed_1
is it good in your expert opinion?

Thank you, fabioroberto and imacC2c i think that you both will save a lot of macbook pro!

Ciao,
I'm from italy too... i fixed the problem of my mac with the "hardware solution" by my own!
i bought this capacitor:
http://www.mouser.it/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=2TPF330M6virtualkey66720000virtualkey667-2TPF330M6

while i was disassembling the motherboard, I even changed the paste with the artic5 one but if you don't disassemble the cooling system it's not necessary.

it's working great !!!

Solved with less than 30 euro

So, I too have been having the troubled gpu panic attacks for a year or more in my 15"er. I've relied on using the software to keep it running on integrated only but just as of last night while running Aperture (I know) the laptop crashes and I havent' been able to log back in because it keeps crashing while I try typing my password, or just pressing my id picture, or even crashes/restarts while it is restarting from another crash. I think it's a goner. I might try some of the other fixes here but I don't have that skill for soldering stuff. I also know it was long overdue for a past change.

So the computer starts up just fine under Safe Mode. If I want to use the kext fix how should I start up the computer (in safe mode or recovery, etc)

Well, It looks promising. I did all the kext fixes that was needed and it started up with no problems so far. I'm still nervous about using the dedicated gpu. Should I leave it at dynamic/automatic switching?

btw, how does all this work to fix it? Just wondering as I know nothing about any of this. It worked but I don't know how.

Automatic switching. The problem in the use of the nvidia is not the gpu, but the stabilization of the voltage when the gpu changes from g-state 2 to 0 (or 2 to 1). When framebuffer circuit change voltage from 1.05v to 1.806v, cause the known crash.

hello fabioroberto,

i did all with your instruction with kex fix but my applegraphicspowermanagement.kext dont want be loaded, 'write no'' not ''yes'' please help, thanks

okay.
Check if SIP is disabled really (Terminal: csrutil status), if the OS X is El Capitan or later;
Download the edited kext from first page (https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...010-whats-the-best-fix.1890097/#post-23312990);
Delete old kext from Extensions folder;
Using app like Kext Drop, install new edited kext;
Reboot;
Reset PRAM;
After, check if loaded.

Automatic Switch is recommend.

macOS Sierra?
SIP is disabled?

Try this: Delete the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement from Extensions folder.
Install the new edited kext,
Reboot,
Reset PRAM,
Boot into Safe Mode, log in into your account, after loaded, turn off macbook,
Reset SMC,
Turn on and load normally.

If the kext version is correct to the OS, this steps will be successful.
If do not loaded, some step is wrong, check carefully and starts again.

good luck!
