Over the past several months I've been getting kernel panics due to the graphics card, resulting in my mid-2010 MBP crashing. It's been getting progressively worse, something several times a day. (I missed the recall/repair program by a week because the d*cks at Apple never notified me that such a program existed, and the Apple service rep wouldn't make an exception).

So, what can I do to stop this? I think I read somewhere that the dGPU can be disabled, but there is so much information out there that I don't want to try 20 different things before something works.

Here is the KP info:
*** Panic Report ***
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f9386dbdb): "GPU Panic: [<None>] 5 3 7f 0 0 0 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x0061002c: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xd2000000 0xffffff812c90b000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P2/4\n"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.10.22/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127

Like you my beloved MBPro, mid 2010, began panicking only recently. It became unusable essentially. Also, like you, I knew nothing about the recall program and Apple would not grant an exception. After about six months of backwards and forwards and being passed through many hands Apple agreed to refund the cost of a new logic board I had installed in 2014 when it failed. The replacement logic board had the same fault but was within the recall period. So Apple paid me $1200.

I bought a new iMac and downgraded the MBPro to the original Snow Leopard (10.6). Since then it's been steady as a rock. Whatever was in subsequent releases was obviously driving the GPU too hard. Apple could fix that with a patch, perhaps, and make a lot of loyal users very happy. I saw threads where someone was trying to get a petition or something together. there would be many 1000's of users affected by this bug. Apple isn't Apple anymore though so the chance of that happening are slim,.

Good luck finding a cure although I can recommend the downgrade. Snow Leopard is a fine OS (IMHO)

Pete

Thank you for your story Pete :)
Well there's 2 great fixes in this thread, so if you do wish to upgrade the OS- the kext fix works.

Happy you received $1200.

They (Apple) owe everyone in this thread the Retail price they paid for this piece of 2010 scam~

Hi @fabioroberto , I'm wondering is there any Kext for 10.7.5 available? I'm using Lion and found there's not 10.7.5 kext here. Thanks!

P. S: tried gfxcardstatus, but it only let me select "dynamic" as pic shown. Can you tell from the distortion, is my integrated chip broken already? BTW mine is 15" early 2011, Model No. A1286.

Contact me if you need the address of the repair shop in Shanghai.

Hi Ka, I'm not around China, yet I can travel to Shanghai for the issue since there's no one here can do the job. Can you let me know how to reach the fixer? Thanks!

Hey there are actually plenty of repair shops in shanghai. If you go to XuJiaHui take metro exit No 9 and make a left turn. Your find yourself in front of a building full of phones and computers. on second floor on the far end left corridor booth 240, there is the guy who fixed it for me.

xujiahui.jpg

good luck!

I've replaced the C9560 with this one:
P1050535.jpg

The length of this MLCC is almost identical with original cap.
I can directly replace it without scrapping the Logic board.
P1050539.jpg

After replacing the cap, no GPU panic and reboots happen anymore~~!!
It also passed the Cinebench test and exported screen to TV without crashing.
I suppose my macbook to be fixed completely. :D
All the information in this thread is very useful. Thanks everyone~~

Just bought a used MBP mid 2010 with the intention of fixing this issue if it arose... was aware before purchasing. Did you install the new capacitor with a standard pencil style soldering iron or did you use the hot air flow station type used in the video? Thanks in advance!

Can you post the part number and where you got it from please? Did you replace yourself? This definitely looks promising.

Expand the image and you will see the details.

It is from the supplier: Digi-Key
Digi-Key part number: 587-3976-1-ND
Item manufacturer's part number: PMK325AC6337MM-T
Description: 30µF ±20% 2.5V Ceramic Capacitor X6S 1210 (3225 Metric)
That is a Taiyo Yuden PMK325AC6337MM-T capacitor.

I presume that you are from the UK, from your profile pic, so I will post the UK Digi-Key link:

https://www.digikey.co.uk/products/en?keywords= 587-3976-1-ND

Good luck!

Thanks! My MBP is working fine since the downgrade to original OS (Snow Leaopard) but I'm thinking I will do this if it's a fix. Yeah from the UK but living in New Zealand..

I replaced the cap with "MURATA - GRM32EC80E337ME05L".

So far so good, Cinebench has run several times without any problems. Also, using an external display works.

I used a 25w soldering iron with a sharp tip and. It did feel like I had to heat for a long time before I was able to remove the original cap.

If anyone in Sweden has a hard time finding the cap at a reasonable price I would recommend www.microkit.se where you can order stuff from Farnell, RS or Elfa in one order and low shipping cost, 49:-.

Big thanks to everyone providing helpful information in this thread!

Hello guys I am on Yosemite and I have replaced the capacitor with this one: Taiyo Yuden PMK325AC6337MM-T https://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=587-3976-1-ND. The laptop passes the Cinebench test but when I try to open downloads from the dock several times (it makes a short animation before open) it crashes again! I made SMC reset and PRAM reset but nothing! I am dissapointed and now I am trying with the kext fix but it cannot be loaded, I tried as a root user to copy the kext, fixxed the permissions using disk utility but it wont get loaded.. what I am missing? can you help? I spent 80euros for the capacitor replacement but without any luck :S

Also in the Console app I search for gfx0 but no results come up......

Sorry to hear your issue George~ but that could happen for a number of reasons- but hardware-wise...

Usually if it was poorly soldered or if the solder was contaminated or oxidized this can occur. Lots of flux and a clean isopropyl alcohol clean is essential.

The Cinebench GPU test finished successfuly, with fps around 15-16?
If yes, probably the problem is your OSX.
Consider reinstall the OSX again and test it.

Can anyone here hook me up with the original discs that came with this model? Ideally just a disc image I can download and burn... I just installed the capacitor and I'm itching to try out the hardware test to confirm that I did indeed fix the problem (I'm currently using the machine and it's going well so far).

I bought the machine via an online auction and it did not come with the original discs... I can provide proof of purchase if you'd like. (I did not steal it :)

This is what I ordered...

Just finished putting the macbook back together a half hour ago. So far so good... make sure you read the manual on how to disassemble everything. The soldering went relatively easy with a standard pen style soldering iron... just make sure you have one with a really fine tip. I think mine is a 30W. I also used some desolder braid to remove the excess solder after I had the old capacitor removed... I think this made things easier.

I had the same issue trying to get a hold of the installation disc when I had to do a reinstall years ago- but I may have an image on one of my hdds I think, so I'll check for you :)

Damn... just got this in a report... after replacing the cap... :(

*** Panic Report ***
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f853f980b): "GPU Panic: mux-regs 5 3 7f 0 0 0 severity 3 switch-state 0 EG power-state 0 3D 0 HDA 0 : \n"@/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.14.41/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:143

Another update... just redid the fix again... it goes a lot faster the second time... I bought 3 capacitors so I had a couple of spares. It's possible I may not have cleaned up the flux well enough the first time. Made sure the clean the area well. I just ran cinebench 4 times in a row and it completed successfully each time between 15 and 16 fps. Hopefully this is a final fix this time... I hope it's not some secondary component near the capacitor that's getting heated up and starts working.

Just to Confirm I recently gota MacBook Pro 2010 i7 2.66 as a trade and it has the kernel panic everytime the graphics would switch to NVidia it would black screen and restart so I bought this cap to replace it with
http://ru.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=0virtualkey0virtualkey2TPE330MAFB
I can Confirm that this cap works great as a replacement for the c9560 cap that failed causeing the gpu to loose power and panic.
A Very Easy fix for me atleast took me about 10 mins. I just ripd off the old cap with a needle nose plyer and solderd in the new cap very easy. used some great solder with flux and fired right up.

Great to see this old 7 year old MacBook up and running again free of kernel panics.

Cinebench test finished successfuly with fps 12.68.. The second time I repeated the process with cinebench it crashed.. I passed yosemite over snow leopard, I didn't do a fresh install, I don't know if this could result any problems.. The only solution I have right now is to use gfxcardstatus 1.8.1, only with that way it doesn't crash. I have a lot of plugins for ableton so for me to make a clean install and install all the plugins again it take a whole day and I am not in the mood to do this right now.. Maybe in the future I ll try it.. I think I am ok with gfxcardstatus at the moment.. I dont know why this is happening after replacement of the capacitor, the guy that did the job is a profesional, why its happening this?

Maybe the guy used a faulty cap or a used one. i recommend buying the one i previously mentions in the post above. but yea its a problem with the cap maybe the guy you took it to used a used one or he just heated it up. it shouldn't be crashing i recommend buying one and fixing it urself and get some good solder and flux make sure its on there tight
http://ru.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=0virtualkey0virtualkey2TPE330MAFB
thats the one i used on my MBP 2010 15 i7 2.66 w 8gb ram and make sure you get hwsensor make sure your cpu or gpu isn't overheating causing the restart or crash when i pu the map back together i used thermal grizzly its great paste i just ran cinibench 5 times in a row and no crash cores getup to about 80-85 c and the gpu gets about 70-75c those are normal temps its good to open it up and do it urself you save alot of $$ too. good for experience if you ever need to do it again.

Probably this capacitor is faulty. Buy a new one, and preferably the not tantalum.
