Graphical Glitches on Reboot?

Hi all!

Like everyone else, I upgraded to Sierra. I'm running a 5K 27' iMac. Everything is actually perfectly fine for the most part. The only small issue I have is during reboot or shutdown. It'll display an odd graphical glitch for maybe a second, then shutdown or reboot perfectly fine. It only started after upgrading to Sierra...so I'm sure its a software issue.

I simply upgraded from El Cap to Sierra. I then tried a clean install followed by a restore from time machine. Still having same issues. Was wanting to prevent from starting "fresh" completely... blah.

Anybody with a fresh install having this as well?

Same issue after I did a clean install.. This didn't happen when I initially did an upgrade from el-cap to sierra I agree it is a software issue.

Well, this makes me happy in knowing at least I'm not the only one!

I retried reboots serveral times this morning and didn't see the graphical glitch again. When I shutdown it now just get a black screen until it powers off.

No changes made so I suspect it may just resolve itself.

I have a nMP connected via HDMI to HDMI to an Asus 1920x1080 external monitor. I've upgraded the OS to every new version since OS X 10.9 Mavericks with no issues regarding graphical glitches on Startup/Reboot.

I upgraded through the Mac App Store from OS X 10.10.5 to macOS Sierra 10.12 on release day and didn't come across any problems.

I then performed a clean install on my nMP, installing via a USB flash drive. This is when I noticed some strange graphical behaviour during installation where the Apple logo and progress bar would shift to the top left of the screen.

Now I have a graphical glitch in the form of a multicoloured scrambled line going horizontally above the Apple logo on Startup just before being presented with the log in screen. It appears every time, even when restarting.

Since then I have gone back to OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite and no longer have this issue.

Very annoying. Also tried clean install from recovery partition (fully wipe primary partition) not tried USB method, but i guess affect its same.

No worries...I've got the same artifacts on my Late 2014 5K iMac that both you and idome reported. It's software related for sure as reimaging with El Capitan or Yosemite eliminates the problem. I filed a bug report on it during beta testing so I'm sure it will get resolved at some point.

P.S. It occurs with both a Sierra clean install or upgrade here on my 5K iMac and is intermittent during restart or shutdown. It's NOT present at all on my 2014 MBA after upgrading to Sierra. I'm upgrading my mid 2011 iMac to Sierra right now and will report results later.

I had also an issue like this on my 2015 MBPR. On the boot screen, right after i entered my login password. The screen shows a glitch. It happened after I installed macOS Sierra from El Capitan. I don't know what is the problem. Its just annoying to see problems such like this, to think that apple has just released their new flagship OS.

One thought. I upgraded a Mini Server yesterday from 10.11 to 10.12, taking a few screen shots before and after of some system information - I posted them in another thread after noticing two changes to the information shown in the Graphics/Displays section of the System Information app.

First, there's a new data field for "Metal" and a new data field for "Automatically Adjust Brightness", and they're present on my rMBP too. I have an office move this week with no more time to investigate this further, however, I am seeing some artifacts spanning a fraction of a second on boot up of my rMBP's external display in addition to having more resolution options available now on that external display, connected over mDP>DP. I'm suspecting that Apple's reworked its graphics engine...

Well, this makes me happy in knowing at least I'm not the only one!

I noticed some artifacts in the restore animation when restoring FF from minimized if it is playing a YouTube video. I think I've seen a few other glitches but nothing serious. But I would say, agreed, El Capitan is so far a bit smoother in the video department than macOS.

I figure these will get ironed out in the next point release - they're not serious for me - so I'm sticking with macOS for now.

Moreover, some of the glitches of El Capitan are resolved in macOS. A couple issues with the Apple Store have improved for me on macOS.

'And I like some of macOS's features: I like the how I can turn on tabs in the Text application and so on.

Overall, so far so good, and the video issue will probably be resolved shortly.

I had a similar glitch, thought nothing of it really. As long as it doesn't cause any annoying crashes or freezes then I can deal with it until they release a fix.

on the other hand, there is also a glitch regarding the trackpad. as i enter the settings in the trackpad, i checked "ignore built-in track pad when mouse or wireless track pad is present" since i am using a bluetooth mouse. The built-in trackpad still enabled. It ignores the setting selection i prefer.

Same exact issue here. Horizontal line upon boot. I sure hope everyone is reporting these issues to Apple. My oh my, Apple sure is slipping in the QC department.

It was a bit concerning the first time I saw it as it suggested a possible hardware failure on an eighteen month old iMac.

Nope. I've seen the issue all around the web though, so I'm not really worried like I was initially. I'm waiting to see if the next update fixes the issue.

The problem still exist. Maybe upcoming 10.12.1 update will fix it.

I hope too. I'm a bit disappointing because as you see in the comments of these video, these person having the same problem says "If this is a software error why do I get the same glitch when I boot from my backup of El Capitan. PERHAPS this is a hardware error that is caused by software".

I hope they fix this, but I have no problem with staying on Yosemite on my nMP as it works great and has all the features I need.

I have also updated a mid 2015 rMBP which came with OS X 10.11 El Capitan to macOS Sierra 10.12. I wasn't very happy with the performance of El Capitan and for the most part upgrading to macOS Sierra solved a lot of issues for me.

However I now face a new issue when using my rMBP with an external monitor via HDMI to HDMI. Since the upgrade to macOS Sierra there are graphics glitches when starting or restarting my rMBP and also on the log in screen.

I read elsewhere that external monitor graphics issues are fixed in the 10.12.1 update which is still in beta at present. I hope this is the case and was wondering if anyone could confirm this?

These are the sort of things that should never happen, at all. They obviously knew it. Who was forcing them to release Sierra, anyway?

I started thinking if NVRAM reset along of Sierra upgrade has something to do with graphic glitch. How many of us has applied NVRAM reset after Sierra upgrade? I do.

I tried that awhile ago. Didn't do any good for me.

BTW, the graphic glitch disappears when booting in safe mode, but its back after booting in normal mode. So this is definitely software related problem.
