Too late, already bought at the Mac App Store.

But since I’m also looking forward to XCOM, I’ll try the download from Feral's own store next time. So thanks for the hint.

Better off buying it from the Feral web site, partly because I would imagine they will get a bigger share of the £17.50,

We do, you can choose any store you prefer :) but buying directly from our own store does give Feral more of the proceeds of the sale.

If you have any feedback on what we could improve with our store or support just send us an email or send me a PM directly.

plus, and most importantly, if/when there is a patch, you will get the delta, and not have to re-download the whole 8Gb from MAS.

The MAS *should* now have automatic delta updates like we have always had on our own versions. However we can't test the Apple system ourselves as it is automated by Apple. However we have altered how the data is laid out in our games (in collaboration from Apple) to improve the reliability of the system for MAS users.

Bought it!

I don't mind using the MAS. It's a good "backup" of my purchases :p

If you buy from us direct and loose a backup you can send us an email. We can usually get you sorted with a new copy pronto. :)

Fans Spin out of Control

Hi Guy`s ,

GRID is a great game except for one issue :

I was playing it for about 20 minutes , and then closed the app , and I thought I still heard the engines running from the game.

So I re-started my MBP-R , and as it turns out it was the fans that i heard.

They had spun up over 5K :(

I wrote an e-mail to Gerard @ Feral , and I hope to hear back from him , asking if there was any kind of software patch , so I could play the game
without the apparent heat issue.

I realize that it is a very graphic intense game that is going to put push the GPU to the max , however I never thought it would cause the fans to spin up over 5K.

So that is it , I guess if you own a MPB-R and want to play games , it is probably best to stick with the simulation games and app`s.

I do have other games , that should stress the GPU , like AirAttack / HD Pinball / Sky Gamblers - Storm Raiders , and none of those spin my fans up.

O__well , I guess you can`t have it all , I should have realized there might be a heat issue , I was just wanting to play a really good driving game.

GRID , is a great driving game , just not for the MBP-R.

Later , and as always , all replies are welcome :D

Take care :)

If you play the game on max settings the fans will kick in that is what they are designed to do! Their is nothing wrong with them going on full bore while playing as you are pushing the Mac to the maximum.

If you close your lid and the Laptop is still warm the fans keep running for a while until the ambient temp is reduced.

We tested this game for weeks on a Retina MBP without any major issues (I am in fact am using a rMBP right now) as long as you make sure you are well vented the temperature will not be an issue. Also the Mac will clock itself down if the heat gets too high so I would not worry, your fans are doing what they are supposed to do.

None of those games stress the MacBookPro at all compared to GRID. The reason GRID gets the fans going is it is threaded and also takes advantage of as much of the GPU performance as we can get. With a complex game you will always start pushing the limits of the hardware.

That said if you turn down your settings in GRID the load is lower and you will get less fans. That said the fans are not a sign of anything going wrong so I wouldn't worry personally.

O__well , I guess you can`t have it all , I should have realized there might be a heat issue , I was just wanting to play a really good driving game.

There should not be any real heat issue, in testing when we ran these games for 2 or 3 DAYS! without quitting 24/7 on loop! None of our Macs (all types) shutdown due to heat although a few had speedy fans :)

If you are the kind of person who dislikes high fans because you worry about thermal temps then just play on lower settings, lower load = lower temps.

Edwin, I've never patched one of your titles on MAS, but I have never seen a delta update from MAS - ever!
It's one of the reasons I look to other sources for my purchases.
I'll buy GRID from your site later today, or at least over the weekend.

Thanks, as for MAS I have seen it work with Tweetbot before :) So I know it does actually exist :)

Will GRID be available for purchase through Steam? Also, guess even if it is available from Steam you won't be supporting dual platform as different software publishers i.e. buy it for OSX also available on Windows.

It was a very good surprise to see it running on my iMac 2010 27" on native resolution without any framerate issues at all. It loads fast, it runs perfectly smooth, it looks great. I just felt I have to say a "thanks" and a "good job" to the guys at Feral. These guys seem to be able to get the best out of the Mac platform.

On a side note, having played with several Windows racing games during past years (mostly on the arcade side, though, rather than strict simulators), it was odd that I couldn't even finish at the initial race. I'm going from the one side of the wall to the other. I'm sure it's lack of skill and practice, but I just have to ask: is this normal ? (I'm using keyboard) Is GRID considerably more realistic/unforgiving in comparison with NFS series and all the other arcade-oriented racing games ?

Again, good job.

Do not worry, I am a Sim Racing Fanatic since the early 90's (can you tell I am very proud of that fact?) and can have trouble winning in Grid at times. Grid is more of an arcade racer with a great damage model. But it does definitely take some getting used to. I have found that after I am finished playing my own game, it takes me quite a while to get back into the swing of driving the cars in Grid as they are bit harder to handle and also the cars are VERY fast! Lightning quick would best describe the cars in Grid. But when you are "dialed in", the handling of the cars becomes second nature and the game is a lot of fun.

I think it just takes time to get used to the game. The game was praised when it came out by a lot of critics and players, but was also criticized by a lot of sim enthusiasts for the physics being a bit too "unrealistic" when pertaining to speed and grip. But I just think it is a lot of fun and a great departure from developing and playing racing sims all day.

@Edwin
Feral is doing a great job releasing racing titles that are relevant and a lot fun to play. I hope you have plans to keep this up in the future as OSX needs more racing titles and Feral does a great job getting these games to run smoothly on the Mac. It may be a small market when it comes to racers on the Mac, but these titles are not only showing that the Mac can provide a great racing game platform, but that the Mac IS a gaming platform in general along with all the others. I have nothing but praise for Feral. Great optimization and they get absolutely wonderful gameplay out of our beloved Macs.

Here here! Let's hope plans to get GRID 2 onto the Mac are well under way at Feral!

Thanks everyone for the kind words, we never talk about the future but I can tell you we have quite a few racing / sim fans in the offices at Feral towers :)

The GRID multiplayer races get pretty vicious at times! Some people just don't like losing!

Ir really looks like Feral like the EGO engine! What's not to love.

Seriously though, I think they must have a good relationship with Codemasters over the years as they have become a beacon of release for Codemasters racing games. They really do extract the best out of the Mac platform in the way of all around graphics and gameplay. All of this with DLC and extras worked in at times.

Thank you for this analysis, it was exactly what I was wondering for. I can tell your experience in racers by previous posts on other threads, also. I'll keep practicing on this unique handling model that GRID seems to offer. And indeed looks like tons of fun when used to it.

We support about ~100 pads now so if you have a console or an older PC pad it might just work, if not let us know we can usually get even the cheapest pad working if it has enough buttons :)

The support site / FAQ also has a list of known working pads.

Multiplayer?

sadly we have to use gameranger (impossible to make an account cause there is no email of confirmation since 2 days from them) to play online multiplayer!!!

i have no chance to start or join a game ... always alone as a cowboy in the lobby ...

thx and thx for this game

Update:

did it into the game ranger lobby ... there is no GRID!???

Thanks. It's very refreshing to see such a complete, all around, well done job on the mac platform.

Hi Edwin ,

Thank you very much for replying to my post.

So there is no danger at all to my new MacBook Pro / Retina , that is very great news.

You mentioned , if I "am that concerned , to run at a lower setting " , can you please explain how to do this ? Also for someone like myself , what would be considered an out of control fan speed or a damaging fan speed and temp. ?

I don`t mean to high-jack this thread , but , I am also wanting to download Sid Meir`s Railroad and Pirates. My understanding is that where they are more of a simulation type game ( app ) , would I be correct that I could run those at normal ( default ) settings ( if there are any choices ) ? In other words would the 2 games ( apps ) mentioned cause the fans to spin up , as they do in GRID , I say no , but I must ask an expert ;).

Thank you again for your help in understanding that I CAN play "GRID" without destroying my 3 month old MBP-R , that makes me feel a lot better.

Take care , and Happy Easter to you and yours.

Gary  :D

PS:

What about Lego`s LoTR`s , would that be considered a stress game ( app ) or more like I hope Railroad and Pirates to be.

TY , Later :)

Hi Edwin ,

The fans are designed to run when needed so you will be fine. However always make sure your Laptop is well ventilated and if it starts getting to hot to touch perhaps a break is in order. :)

We really hammer our laptops at Feral (they play games all day everyday on the best settings they can run) and we have not had any break. I would perhaps recommend a laptop stand so the bottom of your laptop is off the desk slightly it just helps keep them cooler (and hence slower fans) when playing long sessions.

You mentioned , if I "am that concerned , to run at a lower setting " , can you please explain how to do this ? Also for someone like myself , what would be considered an out of control fan speed or a damaging fan speed and temp. ?

In the in game options their are loads of graphics options and your game resolution. If you turn down the settings the game becomes less graphically complex so needs less power, less power means less heat which means less fans.

If the fans start getting loud I usually check are the vents on the sides as well as the back are not blocked, the laptop is not sat on material or something else that absorbs heat etc. As I mentioned earlier a laptop stand really helps lower temps and lower fan speed.

I don`t mean to high-jack this thread , but , I am also wanting to download Sid Meir`s Railroad and Pirates. They are simpler and should run with lower fans but Railroads as the maps get bigger might push the laptop a little.

However just like grid if you turn down the settings (especially the resolution) you will get longer battery life and lower fans. Just play around until you are happy. These suggestions work for pretty much all games from everyone not just Feral

Thank you again for your help in understanding that I CAN play "GRID" without destroying my 3 month old MBP-R , that makes me feel a lot better.

:) No probs

What about Lego`s LoTR`s , would that be considered a stress game ( app ) or more like I hope Railroad and Pirates to be.

None of those games really stress the rMBP like GRID does playing at retina resolution will be a slight load but they will all run fine.

To lower your settings just hit the options and then graphics, then you can turn down details and stuff.

There is no danger or out of control fans. The temp limit for CPUs is something around 110 degrees celsius, and if this limit is reached, the MBP will shut down automatically. And those 110 degrees are still no danger at all, because CPUs are munfactured at temps over 300 degrees. And thankfully the MBP fans are designed to never let the CPU actually reach 110 degrees under normal circumstances. The sound is normal, you can't expcect such a powerful and at the same time tiny machine to be siltent. Where should all the heat go if there is no space? For that you have two little blowers that can make jet-engine like sound and ramp up over 6000 RPMs. That is all fine, it won't damage anything at all.

Hi El Awesome ,

Thanks for the reply , it is greatly appreciated :)

So , to turn down the settings , would lower the quality of game play , but at the same time lower stress on the GPU.

But , the CPU and GPU , can handle the stress ? That is good news :D

I don`t mean to sound so ignorant , but am I true in assuming that Sid Meir`s Railroad and Pirates ( both Feral apps ) would be a-ok at there default settings , where they are more of a sim. type game and not like GRID , which is graphic intensive and would not cause the fans or heat to build up , O__ probably no more than when I play AirAttack or Sky Gamblers ?

Personally , I would think those games and apps like them would be fine ( well , cause the fans go not run quite as fast ).

How about Lego`s LoTR`s , more like AirAttack or GRID , as far as CPU/GPU stress ?

Thanks again :) , Happy Easter to you and yours.

Take care , :D

Hi Edwin ,

Thanks for the info regarding S-M`s Railroad and Pirates as well as Lego`s LoTR`s .

So , I really don`t need to stress out , as my MBP-R is not really stressing out !

I do believe , that makes us both feel better !! :D

Take care :)

GameRanger have not activated the plugin, we have contacted them and they should be updating the application very soon.
