OS X Cat

Our domestic cats are indeed the most evolved cat on earth, probably the most evolved mammals or even the most evolved form of life...

OS X 10.7 Lion is the last version. iOS 6 will be the all-consuming OS that provides "desktop" and "immersive" modes. Sort of like Windows 8 is going to be.

This is what I think.

Now is a good time to have a universal OS. I am frankly a little tired of the cat names and the litter box is full.

As Apple is now the major player it should go with biggest name in cats.;)

Hello Kitty.

The only species left from the family was Clouded Leopard, I wish they had done this upgrade once more before entering Lion. I love Leopard/Snow Leopard and I plan on keeping them.

BTW, black leopard is a panther

I supose they could go with white lion before making OS XI

Mac OS Smilodon? (10.8)

They where the stealthiest predators of their time.
They May be long since extinct, but when you think about it:

As good as all large mammals extincted around the same time as the Smilodon did, because of new, adapted species that came into the scene. (Mac OS 11!)

So this could clear the path for a whole new generation (new species  ) of operation systems to come, such as Mac OS 11.
Well, this is just my look at it.

This goes directly against Apple's design philosophy.

There won't be separate "modes", like MS' perplexing decision to add more confusion by incorporating not one but two UIs on the same OS.

I don't think there's going to be a 10.8.
I was surprised that there was a 10.7.

As soon as Apple starts using multi-touch desktops that integrate IOS it will become 11.0

And that's the point where I completely give up on Apple. I hate touch interfaces and touch screens, and I don't want it invading my real OS. In fact, I just sold my iPad a month or so ago because it drove me crazy to use it. Sadly, I absolutely agree with you, though. It's going that way, and is inevitable.

Nothing is more evolved than anything else, seeing as evolution is not a race and has no endpoint.

That being said, I think OS X Lynx is probably the way to go.

^ I like the panda idea.

Anyways, let's be logical people, Apple will use another cat name if they choose to continue on. They already have Cougar and Lynx trademarked, so logically they'll use either Cougar and Lynx. Before you argue about Cougar, Apple launched both Puma AND panther, which are both aliases for a Cougar. Apple can very well easily use Cougar and Lynx, and since they've got them under their name, they might as well use them.

Me too. When it happens, I'm staying on 10.7, using it to the end of its life, and then buying an alternative machine.

lol. to be released simultaneously with pink colored Macs :)

I don't want to read too much into things but I kind of think this is true too. I mean, the king of the cat world is the lion (unless you want to go all ancient times and pick like a saber-toothed tiger). You can't really beat a lion...

Though if there will be a 10.8 thats evolutionary like Snow Leopard, I'd like to suggest "Dandy Lion"

I disagree. I don't think Apple will ever do it, not at least in this decade. Apple don't beat about the bush with where they plan on focusing on in the future, hence the sudden drop in what everyone calls Professional software. If Apple had no more plans to continue OS X, they wouldn't have brought a new version out with lots of new features (such as the App Store, the iOSsy stuff, additional security, etc). Why bother going to all that effort if you plan to drop it after that version?

Its clear to see that OS X are going to be rather iOS-esske in the future and the focus on Mac models is going to be portability rather than power, probably resulting in the dropping of Mac Pro, but not the Mac and OS X all together.

I don't really think it will happen in the next version, but I do think it will happen at some point. I just think it will take Apple time to pull it all together and make it work smoothly, as opposed to Microsoft, who seems to be rushing this whole merger of operating systems. I think there will be a gradual shift, leading to a day down the road when they announce a fully integrated OS.

With Windows releasing a numerically-named version of their OS ("Windows 8"), it makes sense for Apple to jump to OS XI (11). This gives a perceived advantage in marketing that Apple is 3 steps ahead of Microsoft.

I've used this example too many times probably, but there is a reason the latest Xbox is named "Xbox 360". It wouldn't have made much sense to have "Xbox 2" and "PlayStation 3" sitting on the shelf next to each other. Naming conventions matter and people do connect the dots when comparing products, even if only subconsciously.

Completely my opinion, but I think it would be cool if they went with sea life names for the next round. It would be consistent with their image of elegance and grace.

Example:
OS 11.0 - Orca
OS 11.1 - Dolphin
OS 11.2 - Ray

Also, a bird-centric theme could make sense given the cloud aspects of forthcoming technologies:

OS 11.0 - Cardinal
OS 11.1 - Blue Jay
OS 11.2 - Eagle
