Yep, can confirm that there is a dark mode in 10.1, but it's indeed hidden. You will however find it by sacrificing a Dell laptop running Windows 10 to the Apple Gods at midnight on All Hallow's Eve while chanting the iOS Software Licence Agreement. Backwards.

So it's really only a question of how much you want it.

Anyone know why they just won't make it an option already? This is the type of **** that makes people dislike Apple IMO.

Same reason they don't have additional options to place app icons anywhere you want, or change themes, or anything else like that--it's not something they feel iOS needs (at least so far).

I wouldn't mind some display options for the home screen, rather than a grid of preferred, but auto sorted icons.
I wouldn't mind a top/bottom split where I can select sort by folders, or show folders as links, or have an app take up two or four spots. for preview reasons, or just a bigger clock ..
Hopefully ios11 comes with a bit more flexibility so the home screen becomes usable, rather than just a display of installed app directory. 3d-touch is a good first step, the time/calendar app showing accurate info is a good step too.

And once again, +1 for jailbreaking. I had dark mode when I had my 5s with ios7 jb and loved it.

Leave it to them to control how we use our own phones, comical.

It is what iOS has essentially always been in that respect (although they've certainly been expanding and loosening up over the years, even if there's room for more and more). Nothing really new or surprising there.

As much as I would like a dark mode or even a wire-frame mode (ala Tony Stark), its never going to happen. Sadly.

Apple never once promised a dark mode for iOS. Some developers found "dark mode" code in Messages, which turned out to be related to the dark theme you see when using digital touch or when sending messages with the fireworks or lasers effects. There was also some evidence of it buried in the Settings app. From these two tidbits of information, the MacRumors echo chamber concluded that a dark mode "must" be coming and Apple is simply holding it back.

Apple is not responsible for your assumption that a dark mode is coming. It wasn't promised with 10.0, and there was no additional evidence of it in 10.1. Getting upset because it didn't suddenly materialize is like getting upset because the update didn't suddenly allow us to choose a different default web browser or maps app. No use getting worked up over something Apple never promised to begin with.

Hard to say never since all kinds of things can happen as they have happened in relation to other things before (like widgets or third party keyboards or something else similar).

I just find it comical how many ideas they actually got/stole from jailbreak tweaks and yet.
It seems like they bring in things that they feel would appeal to their typical users and/or that they want to include for their own reasons, but it's not really anything and everything, nor is it something that might come early on and could take longer for them to decide to go with (for whatever reason).

Well, to be fair Apple never allowed jailbreak. If developers created unsupported tweaks for iPhone, expect those ideas to be stolen and baked right into the OS later on.

and even then it's still not as good as the tweaks they got it from. I mean if you're going to borrow ideas don't make it function less/worst.

ie night shift/f.lux, quick reply etc.

and they never will but it's crazy how it'll void your warranty when it's technically legal.

So let me get this straight, you dislike Apple because they didn't implement a feature that was based on a rumor?

Furthermore, why would Apple spend money developing a dark mode for iOS when Night shift mode accomplishes the same goal (making the screen easier on the eyes at night).

You expect Apple to spend thousands of dollars on a feature that just "looks cool"?

Incorrect, I dislike them for many more reasons. And no, night shift does not substitute dark mode, at all. Night shift doesn't turn white to black right? There's more purposes than that.

Sigh.

Apple isn't going to release dark mode until next year's iPhone with OLED or MicroLED screen.

Believe it when I see it, both the dark mode & OLED display.

Dark Mode was introduced on Mac OS to allow someone to focus and get work done. This is how is was introduced during the keynote.

Dark mode for Apple TV makes perfect sense as it makes for a more theater type experience.

What is the purpose of dark mode on iOS? Besides "it looks cool" and "I don't like white everywhere!" Night shift takes care of reading the screen at night with less eye strain.

I disagree. It certainly helps, but dark-themed apps and websites are just a lot more comfortable for reading, at least at night. Apple knows this, they introduced a dark theme to Safari’s ‘reader mode’ and iBooks. Picture-in-Picture would be more useful in a darker setting too.

UIKit supports dark variants for many components already, it would be trivial for them to add it. I firmly believe that it will come some day, perhaps an OLED iPhone will be that push.

To be less jarring at night would be part of it. Night Shift addresses the blue light aspect of it all, but it doesn't address general brightness, which is different.

To focus and get work done can be another aspect of it too--certainly it would be in a somewhat difference sense than it is in macOS, but it doesn't mean that it can't help people focus more in one way or another.

There's also watchOS that has been dark from the beginning, not really because of any particular experience purpose (beyond black just perhaps looking better in a watch context), and more probably because of the screen technology and battery considerations.

Listen bro you can have your phone however you want but don't go questioning what others want with their own phones. I like having dark themes for looks & functionality, simple as that.
