f.lux was an app but Apple pulled it from the store, then f.lux became a Jailbreak tweak and a few years later we have night shift which is like f.lux only it is crap compared to it. Even when they copied something from Jailbreak they manage to f it up:rolleyes:

I like Apple products and have nothing else for myself in my house but they are a bit backwards at coming forward.

Looking forward to a new Jailbreak for iOS 10

wow I had no idea it was an actual app before a jailbreak tweak, see what I mean. Yep night shift is **** compared to it.

When I had f.lux I used the candle setting which I loved and night shift isn't even close to that.

Why is it **** compared to it? It's not as configurable perhaps and doesn't necessarily go as far as f.lux might allow, which can certainly make it lacking in a sense, but seems like it's quite a ways off from **** (or basically horrible).

Just limited compared to f.lux, doesn't offer as many color temps as f.lux does. I can't remember if f.lux ran off a schedule like night shift does? That part I like about night shift though.

One it works on gps, two it only has two settings, on or off.

So yes I think if you ever used f.lux I'm sure you would see the difference to make one ok and the other brilliant. To someone that has never used f.lux(I don't know if you have or not) then I can see why they not see the difference.

No offence meant.

That's more or less along the lines of what I basically said. It doesn't really make Night Shift **** (or basically horrible, to use a more appropriate word).

Well I'm calling it **** because Apple stole the idea & then decided to limit it.

Usually when you steal ideas you make your own product better to improve from the one you stole.

They could have at least gave us dawn/dusk so that you don't have to keep changing the time it turns on/off but I suppose if you live on or near the equator it doesn't matter.

With f.lux I had it on all the time and it set to change(slowly) at dawn/dusk. With night shift I just leave it on the same settings all the time because they made such a bad job of copying it. I live in the U.K. and we have a huge difference between day lengths in winter and summer so I would need to change the set time every few weeks.

To me night shift is a crock of dog turd.

Don't they have sunset/sunrise setting for Night Shift?

Just realized something that I noticed when ios 10 first came out & just remembered...................maps app switches to dark mode when you choose satellite.

Now go check it out and you can't tell me you wouldn't want that throughout.

Yep...its what mine is set to do....

There's no setting for that? Just a time schedule to set

Am I missing something

*nevermind, gotta love a simple google search.

You need to enable Setting Time Zone under Location Services.

You were missing something but glad you found it. I did it when Nightshift first turned up and left it on ever since. As the nights have got longer nightshift turning on and off has worked fine along with it.

They've had that for iBooks for some time now I believe. And various other apps like Google Maps have been supporting this kind of thing too.

This is the first time even reading about that option & I've been using night shift since day one with time schedule which I've adjusted plenty of times so this is good find for me.

You know the reason? I do find it weird it only works with satellite.

Thanks for the tip, I have only been using night shift since I got my iP7 however it doesn't help me because as like with f.lux I have it on all the time but f.lux would change gradually(does night shift change gradually?) in the evening to a slightly more yellow tint.

If I were to turn off night shift even during the day the screen is way too blue.

Maybe in the future Apple will bring more options to it but Jesus how could they copy something and leave out the best bits.

As you can see from my screenshot this is where I have it set to all the time

Weird, f.lux never changed gradually for me. It stayed at whatever temp I set it at.

If I remember correctly it was under 'change slow' in the setting of the app, I think. It is one of those tweaks that you set and forget.

I can't say I remember even seeing that setting, doesn't help that I haven't been jailbreaked since buying my SE.

Dark Mode was introduced on Mac OS to allow someone to focus and get work done. This is how is was introduced during the keynote.

Dark mode for Apple TV makes perfect sense as it makes for a more theater type experience.

What is the purpose of dark mode on iOS? Besides "it looks cool" and "I don't like white everywhere!" Night shift takes care of reading the screen at night with less eye strain.

Its not even called Dark Mode on macOS. Its called dark Menu Bar/Dock. Because thats all it changes. It doesn't even change the notification center from light to dark.

OP:
Dark mode cannot work like everyone wants it to. Specific apps can have a dark overlay, like clock does. Settings, Calendar, Notes and so on. But you cannot give that dark overlay in Safari, it would lead to a white page with two black bars at the top and bottom. It wouldn't work for mail, wouldn't work for messages, and think about the millions of third party apps that it would not support. Dark mode on iOS does not make sense. It makes perfect sense for AppleTV because its extremely bright. There are way too many issues with bringing a dark mode to iOS. Consistency being the biggest one. If your phone is too bright, use the low light zoom trick. Been using it for years.

To be fair, even if there might be some hurdles, it can still work. Perhaps some devices would need to support it or something like that, but it can be done. Even just looking at how invert colors work, just that kind of approach with some tweaks (like not applying it to images/videos) can mostly do the trick.

Invert colors is a system wide change, which offers consistency. You cannot make Safari into a dark mode. Even the jailbreak tweaks couldn't do it. It left the white screen with a black top and bottom bar. If anything it makes it look brighter because the screen then pops.

I use night shift and I love it. Very easy on the eyes, especially when first waking up.

I can't remember where I found it but I have a triple click for a red mode and a triple click for a very dim screen, almost zero light.

Well, even something some apps might still have a light background would still offer something more than what's there now. Even in macOS, as you mentioned, it just applies to menu and dock, and yet it's still a feature nonetheless. And it can even be done as a system change like inverted colors (somewhat modified) as you mentioned.

Well the reason its an option in macOS is for those with dark wallpapers. The light menu bar and like dock with a dark wallpaper looks awful. This is not a problem in iOS.
