Nice guide, but icons are overrated; keyboard shortcuts, Terminal, and Quicksilver are the only tools you need. :D

I'm guessing to get there you double-clicked on Dock.app instead of right clicking and selecting Show Package Contents?

Have you tried logging out then in again? Or restarting?

Yeah - i had to uninstall the dock - which was a PITA then i had to restart and create a new user - it was a PAIN

okay so is there a way to change something to make all your menu bar etc. black in snow leopard?

Hi, sorry for the lack of reply. I'm a bit swamped with work at the moment...

It takes quite a while to make an easy to follow and good quality guide (with screen shots etc), so I don't want to rush it, especially as the instructions involve changing system files! I'll hopefully get around to it at the weekend, if not then definitely on Monday!

Excellent Guide

Great work and thanks for all your hard work put into it. For now I'm really just 10-12days green on OS X almost fully @ home so I'm going to wait until system wide themes are available for OS X Snow Leopard.

BTW, has ANYONE created quality system wide SL themes, if not then whats the hold-up?

There are plenty of system-wide SL themes out there. You just need to know where to look ;)

Check out these forums: http://macthemes.net/forum/viewforum.php?id=2

Pretty much all system-wide themes come with installers now...so there is no fiddly copying and pasting involved.

NOTE: Make sure it's a SL theme if you are on SL, or a Leopard theme if you are on Leopard!!

HD icon

I saw a desktop with a different icon for the HD and it listed the MB used and available. How to do this?

No, sorry. That's why there are separate steps for Snow Leopard that don't involve Mirage.

Mirage 2 was released here.

It works for snow leopard only and saves the hassle of the manual steps. The original Mirage will still work for leopard.

Excellent, thank you! Only released 15 days ago so I hadn't seen it yet. I'll edit the original post now.

Yeah sorry about that. I should probably be checking MacThemes more often for updates. Glad you've got it all sorted now! :)

EDIT:

There's a very good guide here which explains in great detail how to install a black theme to Snow Leopard. I don't have SL, so can't really go through the step by step details with screenshots, but this guy did a very good job of it!

The only thing I hate about changing app icons to the text ones is that it appears that way in Finder too and it looks ugly in Finder.

Is there a way to only the change the icon in the dock?

I like the 'bar' dock idea. I might just have to try it! Thanks for posting this very helpful thread.

How do you make the toolbar on the top black with white text?

Check out this tutorial. Or come back in 24 hours and I'll have updated this thread with instructions.

That guide is for Snow Leopard.

Not that I know of I'm afraid. Both the Applications folder and the dock access the same file for the image. You could try changing the background colour of the Applications folder to one that better compliments the text icons.
