EDIT!!! 4 AM GMT+8! GOT IT FULLY WORKING WITHOUT CHAMELEON! X1600 with FULL graphics acceleration. Method up in a bit, doing some testings :) NO MORE KERNEL PANIC.

hooray!! This is promising. I am 0% hacker, so I think I'll wait a while to a) see if any major issues crop up and b) see what happens on the first update. If I need to spend time rehacking my computer with each update, then it may not be worth the hassle...

So far so good. Whats not supported (confirmed)

- MacBook2,1 because of Intel GMA 950. Nothing you could do about it.
- MacMini1,1 (same reason as above)
- MacMini1,2 (same reason as above)
- iMac4,1 and 5,1 (Applies only to educational model that has GMA 950 IGP, same reason as above)
- Nvidia 7300GT (Mac Pro doesn't even wanna boot with it!!!! stuck at apple logo).

Whats supported (confirmed)
- MacBookPro2,1
- MacBookPro3,1
- MacBook3,1
- MacPro1,1 with upgraded graphics card

What i think is supported (not confirmed)
- MacMini2,1
- iMac4,1 and 5,1 with ATI X1900
- MacBookAir1,1
- MacPro2,1
- MacBook4,1

OK so then the above solution is not actually for this thread since it doesnt work on GMA950 machines, correct?

It does work, but without GMA950 drivers. Practically useless. Unless you can find a way to port linux drivers.

UPDATE: 7.13am GMT+8 a big unwelcome surprise. Mountain Lion is designed to use OpenGL 4.0. Those card that we have does not support it. So some animations works, the other doesn't. Anybody has any idea how to fix this?

UPDATE: 8.19 AM GMT+8:

Heres some bad news for X1600 and X1900 owners (MBP2,1, iMac4,1, 5,1)

1. Mountain Lion does NOT support 32bit kernel in the final release. (LP64 only, arch=i386, "3" and "2" on start-up won't work)

2. A highly required kext ATI1600Controller.kext does not support 64bit. Try loading it by going into Single User Mode, navigate to /system/library/extensions and type kextload ATI1600controller.kext. It will give you a nasty error.

3. Because of the reason above, Mountain Lion will only display Radeon X1600 8MB in about this Mac.

4. OpenGL don't work. Surprisingly Core Image works. :D

Solution.
1. Get ML to boot in i386/32bit kernel extension mode.
2. Find a 64bit version of ATI1600Controller.kext (not likely to be able to)
3. Try to load 32bit kernel extensions in LP64 kernel

Hackerwayne,

I've been following the progress on these unsupported macs for a while. From what I've read, the GMAX3100 has been rigged to run ML through a 64-bit driver which was found in Snow Leopard 10.6.2. However, I've last heard that several graphics functions are missing (though I may be misinformed). Could this also be from the lack of Open GL 4.0 support??

UPDATE: 2/22/2012 The guide (see post #22) has been modified to fix "Kernals_CL" problem, and a compatible Mac is no longer required :) If there is any other issue, feel free to post below.

I own a Apple Mac dev license.. After downloading the 3.8GB DMG installer, I found out that 10.8 isnt compatible with my old MacBook White :( After few hours of work.. I manage to get OS X Mountain Lion to atleast boot on old MacBook White :D. (well, atleast it boots -.-;) The Intel GMA 950 was not recognize and Launchd is using 80% of RAM and CPU. Its currently unusable.. UPDATE: Now working perfectly fine on my MacBoom White '07, Mac Pro '06 and MacBook White '08
Heres a pic to prove =P Image

More pics

I can't use desktop capture.. (CMD+Shift+3) If i do that, it will crash the mac instantly.. (Kernal Panic, something to do with Launchd)
:)

I 'm sorry. My English is bad.

My machine is 2006 macbook .

If use post #22 does it work for my macbook with 10.8 GM?

Thank you.

This method supports the 10.8 GM?

Sorry, this method does not work for GMA 950 in ML because:

1. Kernel is now in LP64. They scrapped i386 completely, in other words. Kernel and EFI32 is gone in ML. *sad*

2. Intel GMA 950 kexts does not have a LP64 version. Why X3100 works?! Because a 64bit version of the kext was accidentally included in 10.6.2.

Nope, see reason above.

Yes, its because of the Open GL 4.0. No big deal, that can be solve by using Lion's files. Without a 64bit kext is hard to solve. Eg: GMA950. X1600, X1900s has 64bit frame buffer kexts. Whats not in 64bit is ATI1600Controller.kext, which is a big deal cuz it controls graphics card memory size, OpenGL and Quartz Extreme. Without that, the graphics is severely crippled. launchpad, flash does not work

GMA950 currently does not work. Not even frame buffer, completely hangs on boot up. (stuck at DSMOS has arrived)
It worked on the first releases (actually it ran better on gma950 than x3100). Is it impossible to port those drivers and use them with the final ML release?

As i mentioned in the guide, Apple has either completely removed 32 bit kernel or locked it up. (it was present in DP1) Because holding down "3" and "2" on start up and adding arch=i386 does nothing. I couldn't get it to boot in 32 bit mode, therefore non LP64 version of the kexts cannot be used. Eg: all GMA 950 kexts and ATI1600Controller.kext. Unless one can find a way to reenable/reinstall 32bit kernel OR force load 32bit kexts in 64bit mode.

In the guide you say that MacBooks with the X3100 graphics chipset have a problem with screen dimming. What exactly is the problem?
