The other problem with the set-up is that when you send a message through the gmail servers, it can only save the sent-mail in the sent-mail-folder on the gmail server it seems (not on the mobileme server).

A simpler way

Just noticed a simpler way to do things (apologies if someone already mentioned this).

Basically just set-up your mobile me account on your iphone. Dont set up the gmail account on your iphone.

Go to the SMTP settings for your mobile me account, click add SMTP server and just add the gmail smtp server with your gmail username and password (the entry might already be there if you previously set up and removed your gmail account).

Then you will only have 1 account show up (the mobile me account) while all your replies will be sent through the gmail SMTP server. Everything seems to be working great this way.

gt you can also just "deactivate" the account from the phone - so it's still there if you ever want to look at it for any reason. but when inactive it wont show up in your list of inboxes.

Looks like gmail saves the day for me and allows me to use mobileme how I want.

Just change the smpt server to GMAIL in the MobileMe account.

What about mail folders? On my Gmail, I have folders like pending orders, vacations, work, etc. By forwarding to MobileMe, I guess I won't able to use those folders?

If not, can these settings also be used on the Mac within Mail so both my iPhone and Mail are synced? I need to be able to access my email from both locations.

Maybe I'm not getting this right...

In Mail on my Mac, I created a mailbox titled "Saved" under MobileMe. I moved an email from my Gmail "Saved" folder to the MobileMe folder, however, the folder is not being created on the cloud (MobileMe web) or my iPhone. With Gmail, I am able to created mailboxes in Mail on the Mac and it creates them on the web as well as my iPhone.

Anyone else able to do this or know what's going on?

Strange. The folder I created on my Mac did show up on my iPhone but not MobileMe web. Now THAT is some strange stuff. Gmail seems to be far more superior when it comes to this type of stuff. Maybe the IMAP setup on my Mac that MobileMe does automatically isn't correct. I don't know...

up on the left column underneath my INBOX, SENT, TRASH, etc...

Go to Mailbox -> New Mailbox

Again, the folders should appear under your mac.com address
on the left column of your mail.app

Those same folders now show up on the MobileMe webpage,
the iPhone and my laptop.

Whatever mail I drag to one folder gets dragged across the board.

It took about 20 minutes for the folder to FINALLY show up on me.com. So, I have Gmail set to forward my email to me.com and it goes through ok to my Mac but man, the push to my iPhone is seriously messed up. My fiance sent me an email about 15 minutes ago and it still isn't pushing to the iPhone, even though it's there on me.com and my MacBook.

There has been discussion as to how "immediate" GMAIL receives
and forwards email to accounts.

For me it seems fast, but I will admit, there have been instances
that it took more than 30 minutes for mail to push to my devices
from GMAIL.

Unfortunately, none of this is perfect. GMAIL is actually is actually
a workaround to the blatant omissions that MobileMe made to its
$99 per year software. Really, Apple should have seen this coming
and provided a better service to their customers that would allow
them to push multiple email accounts.

i did this too. much simpler and cleaner. i have my gmail account forwarding to my mobileme email account. gmail is my master "email account" for now. so far.....

mobileme wins on:
push incoming email
push contacts

google wins on:
webmail
calendar

things i'd like to see from mobileme....
the ability share groups of contacts among family sub accounts.
the ability share and make changes to people's calendars like you can on google calendars....

Nothing's wrong on my end, I was asking about SMART folders. In the Mail app you can create smart folders that automatically organize things based on certain criteria. I was sad to see that MobileMe doesn't allow this. But you're saying that folders in the Mail app sync to MobileMe and hence the iPhone.

Have you tested smart folders yet?

address.

On the iPhone I set up an "Other" account. I first put all information
related to the POP account I wanted displayed in my messages other
than my MobileMe account.

Following your instructions I used the imap.gmail.com address for
incoming mail and my own personal POP server for outgoing mail
so that when I reply on my iPhone my personal address shows.

Saving all that information, the iPhone did not verify it, saying
something about SSL security and such.

Want to know what worked for me instead? I didn't set my iPhone
up under "OTHER." Instead, I set it up under MobileMe. Here are
directions that have had my accounts working flawlessly...

Create a GMAIL account

1. Go to Google Mail and create a personal account

2. After you have successfully registered, log into your GMAIL
account and click on SETTINGS in top right corner

3. Go to Accounts and scroll down to Get Mail From Other
Accounts. Fill out the information pertaining to the POP3 account
you wish GMAIL to retrieve mail from.

4. Go to Forwarding and POP and select the option Enable POP
only for mail that arrives from now on

5. Repeat above steps for additional POP addresses you wish to forward to MobileMe.

6. Final Step: Make the one account you want all your addressed mail
to appear from as the DEFAULT account under GMAIL. This is important when
replying to mail via iPhone



Set up .MAC to push on your iPhone


1. On your iPhone go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Add
An Account -> Mobile ME

Thanks for the advice - this works - but not flawlessly

It works as described but because gmail keeps the send info in the email header, when my E-mails are delivered to a PC (outlook) they say

From: yourusername@gmail.com on behalf of customaddress@mydomain.com.

"Flawless" would be if they just had customaddress@mydomain.com

Now, getting your name to appear flawlessly can be achieved by setting up "other" accounts as is explained at the top of this thread, and then selecting the desired "from" from the list when replying (or setting the default "from" ahead of time). But that's not flawless either because when you send from that "other" account. You are no longer within the "mobileme" account and the "sent" mail does not appear in the sent items box of mobileme or in the mobileme account of your iPhone, or in your desktop IMAP client.

Granted, it's a minor flaw, but I felt the whole point of this was to unify the email experience across all clients.

The solution lies in finding an SMTP server that sets the "from" address like gmail does, but clears the originating header (Google keep the originating header info to prevent the mail from being suspected as spam).

Well I initially used the OP's instructions, but then I used yours after I figured things out a little more. Basically I did this:

I have a gmail account and a mobile me account.
In gmail, I have all my gmail forwarded to the mobile me account.

On the iphone, I set up both accounts (mobileme and gmail). All my email will arrive in my mobileme account. When I reply to my email, I set up my mobileme account to use Gmail's SMTP server. And now everything works great.

What if you have multiple emails being forward to me.com (not just 1). You then need to have multiple FROM addresses. Are you able to select which SMTP Server to use on the fly (like you can with multiple mail accounts)?

Why doesn't this work with hotmail? When I set the outgoing smtp server to live.com for hotmail, any email I send has the me.com in the FROM field.

However, when I try this with my gmail account, it works as described throughout this thread.

It works because Gmail allows itself to be used as an SMTP relay, whereas live (and many others) do not. Sorry if that's the incorrect term, but there is the distinction.

I used this set up and it appears to be working just fine for email. For some reason, my contacts, calendar, and bookmarks are not pushing or synching at all!

I've tried:

Deleting account
Reseting iPhone
Turning off push, turning back on, both on individual items and the master switch and etc... it wont' even fetch the items.

All events and contacts are in MobileMe and iMail but, my contacts and calendar are EMPTY on the iphone. No spinning icon, no nothing. It just says "No Contacts" and "No Events" on the phone.

It doesn't make sense that it's related but, when I changed my set up to the above, I lost all my stuff. Email on the other hand is working they it should!

this blows. every time i set up both of my accounts (one gmail the other work), they both end up turning into gmail accounts. seriously wtf am i doing wrong?!?!

EDIT: i just went back and tried to change one of these accounts back to my work smtp and acct info, now they are both my work email. this is stupid. why can RIM charge NOTHING for BIS that works flawlessly (not to mention cut/paste and search emails), but i'm supposed to pay $99 (with workarounds of course) to do it on my iphone? lame. but screw getting my email the way i want, at least i have my awesome idisk LOL

This set up has been working VERY well for me today. I added a few more things though.

I also forwarded my POP mail account to Gmail as opposed to Gmail getting the POP mail.

I deleted ALL other accounts and started from scratch and one by one, brought them up. I could have had a problem that I downloaded a VERY early (Thurs night) release of MM and 2.0 so it could have been the problem.

VERY happy with PUSH and has been flawless all day for me.

What exactly did you change so I know what to amend on my
own personal setup?

Yes, this works perfectly but I do see a huge lag on my laptop
where it does not update the mail as fast as my desktop or iPhone.
Have heard other complaints as well where the laptop doesn't push
but rather syncs and it doesn't do it immediately upon booting.

I also forwarded my POP mail account to Gmail as opposed to Gmail getting the POP mail.

Interesting. How does this change things?

I take it this forwarding of your POP to GMAIL can be done from your
ISP Providers webpage. Yes?
