it does cost 2400 bucks over 2 years time...
Well, more like $2000 w/the 4GB model and base plan, and most of that (over $1400) is the plan amount, which is very competitive with any similar plans elsewhere - so a free T-mobile phone on a $55/month plan would cost almost 3/4 as much as an iPhone over that time period.
That exact feature is available on my GMC truck, along with several other more useful features. Just push the blue OnStar button.
Perhaps, but the Finnish accent of the Vertu concierge adds that extra bit of exclusivity, and they always tell you how wealthy, powerful, and attractive you are. Does OnStar do that? I think not.

a truck is equipped with a direct link to a concierge service? how unusual! you must have got your iphone quickly then as no doubt they had someone queue for you.

Not unusual at all. Almost all General Motors vehicles are equipped with OnStar. Basic services (safety and security like remote door unlock, vehicle tracking, and vehicle diagnostics) are free for the first year. My truck sends me an email every month with it's diagnostics report. Just got one yesterday telling me everything was OK, but the windshield washer fluid was low and it needed to have its oil changed in about 1000 miles. The built-in hands-free cell phone comes with some free minutes. I can purchase more, but they're relatively expensive, and I already have a cellphone with unlimited minutes. OnStar concierge services cost extra but they have far more capability than can be had with a Vertu.

No, but I live in northern Minnesota. I get plenty of Finnish accents as it is without my vehicle having one. My free year is up, and I'm not renewing, but they do answer the blue button "Hello Mr. (xxxx), how can I help you?".

didn't see anything about a concierge service on that page. i did see that you can get a hotel recommendation.
They'll make the reservation for you. Recommend a restaurant and make reservations there too. Plus tell you how to get there turn by turn. And track the vehicle to make sure the valet doesn't take it for a joyride (or at least they can tell you where he went).

it sounds like a nice service. to be fair it doesn't equate to a concierge service. but it seems a very worthwhile thing.

no way. the iphone has much more in common with a ferrari. ferrari's are generally beautifully designed (by pininfarina) as apple are wonderfully designed by jonny ive. whereas the prius looks like it was designed by a child with crayons. the ferrari, like the iphone, backs up it's looks with performance. whereas the prius, although claiming to be highly economical and low emitting, is expensive to buy (compared to similar low emission vehicles) and produce and finds a conventional diesel engined bmw emitting as little co2.

You've hit the nail on the head.

Besides, no badmouthing Ferraris, they are awesome cars.

so what ur saying is that that the people who buy those phones have such low confidence level that they need people to remind them how "exclusive and wealthy" they are

Amen to that. The only thing that can make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end quicker than an iPhone is the sound of a Ferrari V8 at full song. Truly magical...

Hopefully the Ferrari's insanely slow depreciation (a friend of mine recently sold his 360 Modena with 7k miles for $2k more than he paid for it) closely resembles the iPhone's as well! :)

Cheers,

Kevin

The V12, as can be found in the 612 Scaglietti, puts the V8 roar to shame. Mmmm I could listen to that engine all day.

That said, I think that the prius comparison is valid at least in the sense of superiority and smugness that seems to come in the box of every apple product.

here in london we have a congestion charging zone. you have to pay £8 every day to drive into london. but the prius is exempt because of it's low emissions. but there are several other conventional cars that have lower emissions but they still have to pay to drive. the prius owners smugly think they have something special when i don't think they do. the prius is so expensive to make that it uses up more resources in it's manufacture than a conventional small car with low emissions. we apple users do have a tendency to smugness. but it's an easy trap to fall into because apple stuff tends to work so well.

It made me feel good to get a phone that does 10 times more than a phone that costs ten times more.

Isn't this along the lines of what people with cheaper smartphones that do the same things and/or more than the iPhone are saying? And how many people have been calling other smartphones "pieces of crap" compared to their iPhone?

I see a lot of parallels.

What a douchebag!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate rich people, that's why I refuse to become one. :D

But seriously, they are mostly all pricks.

The prius is actually worse for the environment over ten years than the car with the exact same engine minus the electric motor (Toyota Echo/Yaris) and has the added bonus of being $10k more expensive. Awesome. I just smile and nod.

Vertu is really a service like Marquis Jets or Netjets.

The phone itself is lacking at $499 and is tacky looking, like fake Louis Vuitton

Yeah, that's pretty lame.

I "get" the whole exclusivity thing -- I do. But at least make a halfway decent phone for the ridiculous amount of money that's being spent.

i DON"T get the whole exclusivity thing.

being able and willing to pay for extra functionality and service is good. paying a lot of money to claim to be better and to show people you don't care about being ripped off is kind of lame.

you know when you buy a expensive sports car you usually get something for your money and people can see it. fine with me. this phone however is just a joke.

The entire female cosmetic industry, in billions of dollars, runs on that principle, namely, Satisfying the vanity needs of people. Without that need, there will be a lot of unemployed and homeless people. So we should thank our lucky stars that there are people who have money to spend on such things. We can make fun of them later on but we love them ( and not hate them ) for their spending habits :)

Any proof of this? Can't just say that.

noteable points:

"In most real world applications the Prius only manages to achieve 45 mpg, which is not much higher than most subcompact economy cars (Aveo, Yaris, Scion)." (note that the Yaris and Scion use the same engine as the Prius, sans the motor).

"When you factor in all the energy it takes to drive and build a Prius it takes almost 50% more energy than a Hummer." (Bear in mind that while the Prius is a toyota, it only has an expected lifespan on the electric motor/battery system of 100k miles.)

Sounds good but isn't the Torque Report subsidized by the US auto industry? Wow, I need a more scientific objective viewpoint :)
