Just picked up Wall-E...title 39 seems to be in the correct order on my DVD (single disc version). I could extract this using Handbrake, but had the same audio shift problem. To fix the audio, try extracting the video track, removing ~40 frames from the front (hold down shift and click right arrow 40 times, then cut), and "Add to Movie" the video back to the original file.

I noticed when playing the DVD on the computer, that if you manually rewind to the start, the movie will not play unless you fast forward it 1 second or so - my guess is that this is the audio shift problem.

My preference is to buy the DVD, make a copy for iTunes/Apple TV, then put the DVD back into the case and into storage. They sure make it a PITA. I am curious about the 3 disc version with an iTunes copy - what's the quality like?

Wait, what program did you use to "extract" the video and delete the 40 frames? Can you do that in handbrake?

To the people having problems, as you've already bought the dvd, why not download a torrent?

To be strictly legal, turn off uploading (i.e. redistibution). This may kill your ratio / download bandwidth, but it's worth a try. Anyone object to this legally / morally?

Could you look up the bit rate? Does it have both a stereo and an AC3 track (Stereo & Surround tracks if you get movie properties in Quicktime)?

I can tell you for a fact that none of the digital copies included for iTunes come with 5.1 surround. Pro-Logic only.

The only way to get surround sound from a non-iTunes Store rented movie is to make it yourself.

I assume Quicktime Pro. Not "extracting" the video, per se, but rather simply cutting and pasting it.
SUCCESS! Thanks for the tip (both of you). Now I have a very clean .MOV with iPod atom for my iPhone/ATV.

I was able to get a successful rip without using MTR or DTOX. Here's what I did:

1)Handbrake: title 30 only (all chapters), full resolution @ 1500 kbps
2)Quicktime Pro: load mp4 and extract video layer. Delete first 40 frames from the video layer and add all of the video back in to the original mp4. Extract the audio layer and delete 40 frames, starting at frame 103182. Add this new audio layer back into the original movie as well. Delete both the original audio and video layers. And Save.

The video and audio are all synced up and it's running on iPhone and ATV.

Sorry, is there anyway to elaborate on Step 2? I have QT PRO but I don't know how to do that. Where can you see what the frame count is?

this will work

download handbrake 0.9.3 snapshot and use title 30, this will work perfect, and you won't have to fiddle with the audio track.

No MTR

I am using DTOX to rip. Whenever I rip Title 30, it does not have a blank cell at 1 or 91. Also, the movie starts somewhere in the middle with Wall E carting around the ipod looking robot.

Do the Title #s change with DTOX and if so, which one should i use?

Can this even be done without using MTR (also using 0.9.3 SS which I don't think will break encryption on DVDs so ripping first is a must).

HB uses VLC for decryption. So make sure you have the latest version of VLC installed, then encode title 30 in HB and it should work. I always rip to my drive first (used MTR and it worked fine), so I can't confirm.

In QT Pro, when you open your movie, look in the lower left of the movie window. You'll see a time display. If you click on that, you'll get an option to switch to frame display. To scroll forward and backward frame by frame, use shift+arrow keys. To view the various video/audio layers, got to Window>Show Movie Properties. It's in this window that you can extract video/audio layers. To add video/audio layers back in to your movie, go to Edit>Add to Movie.

i cant seem to get a good rip with MTR. what settings did you use?

also how is the beta of HB supposed to interact with VLC? i dont see any options in HB to point it at VLC - all the libraries that VLC uses are contained within the VLC binary bundle so i dont see how HB would even be aware of them. i get encrypted noise when i try to use the new HB to rip/encode title 30.

If vlc 0.9.xxx is in your /Applications folder HB will load the libdvdcss library from inside the vlc app package. If not, it cannot read encrypted discs. Simple.

Someone else there said they used Ripit, and it didn't show all 99 titles, but only abt 10 real ones and that the movie is title 7 in Ripit.

Here is the link to the 3 page thread if you are interested:

http://www.ripdifferent.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=9923[/QUOTE]

I tried this method and it works. I used RipIt to extract the correct files (done automatically) and then used Handbrake to transform the file created by RipIt in to AppleTV format. When using the RipIt file as source for Handbrake, it reduces the amount of files to 3 or 4--the biggest of which is the actual movie and 2 of the others are Presto & Burn-E.

all I get is a pixelated file

I have tried to covert tracks 30 and 39 in handbrake, and used ripit4me to back-up the dvd on my hard drive (it only saves track 30) and then tried to convert it with handbrake. All I get is a pixelated file. I feel like I have taken most of the steps listed above. Any sugestions as to why I am getting this pielated movie.

No idea.

I'll tell you what works though. Download the currently beta version of Handbrake (v. 0.9.3) Encode Title 30 and use one of the usual presets. That should work. It worked for me. It has to be version 0.9.3 though. It can be found at the link below.

Hb

Just a reminder, since some people don't read all the posts in the thread.

Using HandBrake 0.9.3 Snapshot Builds, HandBrake and VLC (I think you need version 0.9 or later) both need to be in your Applications folder.

@wrkngclasshero
I'm pretty sure DTOX automatically gets rid of the 0 cells. Are you looking at the cells before the rip, or the post-ripped VIDEO_TS folder

from evdberg, developer of mac version of DTOX:
"Since V2.1.4 the way empty cells are automatically removed from the cell list in movie-only mode is changed (see revision history). In case still empty cells are left you can simply deselect them as usual."

although VLC is in /Applications, HB was not. i dont know if HB looks in the same directory its in, or explicitly looks in /Applications. i'll have to fool around with it tonight. i had very little luck dumping the movie out of VLC itself, though in theory this should have worked.

all this business is so stupid. one way or another we will continue to get the data off the disk. all i want to do is get this movie onto my appleTV so that my kids don't destroy the disc... i wish the stupid movie studios would wake up and smell the coffee. pretty soon i'm just going to stop buying their crap if they make it so hard for law abiding citizens to do what they want with their media.

edit: duh, the version of VLC i had on this machine was 0.8.6... upgrading now...
edit2: thanks, VLC 0.9.x + HB beta worked great.

wow guys your all giving great ideas, i'm getting no where at the MTR forums so ill voice my situation. i got walle also and i'm using MTR 3.0 r14m and the only thing i can extract is the main feature (which is what i want cause i convert all my movies to avi). i did title 30 which is the proper title, and mydvdedit and tested it on DVD player and its complete. i even went and deleted cell 01 and 91. I used handbrake 0.9.1 and the movie is perfect except the movie only goes up to 1:12, its missing the remaining footage and i am stumped. I am not interested in making a dvd copy yet, mainly because i am confused about how to use DTOX. i would normally use toast titanium to burn my TS folder, but its crashing every time i do. any suggestions? my ultimate goal is just make it into a xvid avi, visualhub failed as it ended at 1:10 with no audio.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for taking the time to lend ideas. I benefitted from the latest release of Handbrake 0.9.3 which ripped track 30 with no audio sync problems. Very impressive!

Yep, works fine, only thing is HB shows I think 116 chapters when in reality a dvd player shows 33. However playback is totaly like the original.

Does DVD Shrink work in Crossover? Anyone know?

~ CB

I have it installed, it seems to work for some titles, but other titles give a permissions error. I will play around a few more times tonight and let you know.

Title 30 confirmed

Hey guys, I'm not a mac user, but I was trying to figure out which title contained the real movie and stumbled onto this thread. So with this threads help and using Kaffeine media player under Linux I confirmed it is indeed title 30 (Kaffeine shows the title numbers when playing a movie).

So for any future people browsing this thread, rip title 30! The other 90 something titles are garbage. Thanks for everyones help, you saved 10 years of my life and kept me sane.

Prince Caspian

Prince Caspian also comes with 99 titles when I try to handbrake. Does anyone know which one is correct?
