This Pixel Fold costs exactly the same as a Samsung Fold, but with worse hardware and worse software (especially with how apps look on the big screen). I'm not sure who's getting this apart from YouTube reviewers and tech journalists. 😅

I have had my iphone 11 for almost four years. It would be toast without a case. The number of times it has fallen out of my pocket getting in/out of the car is enough for me to know caseless doesn't work for me. I'd far prefer a basic case than the hassle and additional cost of insurance.
I might add that a folio case has saved my screen from damage more than once. I shudder when I see naked phones.

Whether it’s the clamshell razor that folds open or this thing, I don’t think I’d like how thick these devices are when closed. I just don’t get it.

But hey, if it appeals to someone, more power to them!

If I could fold my iPad mini in half and have a screen on the front for iPhone usage, that would be perfect. The problem with Android is they just don’t have tablet OS support that works well. iPadOS on the other hand is great. So I do believe when Apple does this it will be amazing. An iPad and iPhone in one device. The ecosystem and OSes work to Perfection.

Seems just a hair fatter than the iphone 3g. It's definitely a thicc phone.
But it is a phone and mini tablet in one. Therefore, it is honestly insane how thin this device is when folded. It is a true engineering feat. If it were just a slab phone then yes, it would be thick. But it's not.

The $1800 is far more for the foldable tech than it is the storage IMO. A pro max is $1200 for the same config and this phone has an ipad mini sandwiched in between. Rumor is the 15 pro max will be more, too.

To be real, I wouldn't pay $1800 for any phone, but I also don't think it's a asinine intro price, assuming it doesn;t fall apart like some foldables tend to do after normal use. Keep in mind, pixel phones historically go on sale a few months in, too. By the time iphone 15 launches I'd bet this could be had around the $1200 mark, maybe less.
I remember when people were paying $199 for iPhone and saying they would never pay more. Now, it’s over $1k and it will eventually hit $2k. We are all addicted to these damned things.

A solution in search of a problem: im willing to bet the market for people who want a phone as big as an iPhone Pro Max AND who think a tablet “smaller than an iPad mini” is vanishingly small.

Apple will eventually follow, but I think they are saving their interpretation for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. This is no threat to iPhone yet, but constant iterations will only make the form factor better.

It is astounding to me that people still cannot comprehend the advantages of a foldable phone. It is a mini tablet and phone in one, that I can easily slide into any pocket. Is it really that hard for you to understand?

In the 5 years that foldable smartphones have been a thing, I can count with all the fingers on one hand how many I've seen in the wild.

I mean, people's pockets don't care though lol. That was really my point. For some, the thickness of this thing is untenable. And that's fine. I don't see this particular device getting mass adoption, if for no other reason, the cost of entry.

I've been watching videos on this thing since I entered the thread. It's an impressive phone and am not trying to downplay that. But I am trying to be realistic.

Im probably in the minority here, but if I wasnt so deep into the Apple ecosystem, I would have bought this at launch.

I know some feel it’s dumb or just a gimmick, which I can agree with gimmick, but after playing with a galaxy fold for a few hours, I can’t help but love the concept folding concept.
Don't limit yourself just to the apple ecosystem, you're missing out! I have a Samsung Flip 4, an iPhone 14 Pro, 2 Macs and 2 Windows PC's, and I never have a problem between them.

I don't wear skinny jeans, so I can't speak for those, but I've not had an issue putting any of my foldables in any pockets. I even have my Pixel Fold with me at the gym when I am doing cardio in gym shorts. I personally think it is more pocketable than my 12 PM was. It was way to tall and wide for my liking. To each their own though.

I’ve said this before, and the biggest issue for me, with foldable, is that content that is good and one aspect ratio, is not never good when folded in half. Unless you had an A4 paper ratio (which is always the same when folded) but that is not a good ratio for videos or any media content.

Same here. I have an iPhone (work phone) and a Pixel 7 as backup phones to my Pixel Fold, and I use Linux, Windows, and MacOS on a daily basis.

Surely you are able to understand that there's a slew of usage cases here. You have made it clear the phone works for you, and I am in no way trying to convince you are anyone otherwise. Was just putting into perspective the thickness of the phone. It's rather thick, regardless of how we justify it. We live in a world where people lament the discontinuation of the mini due to its extreme pocketability, while some others wish things were thicker just to add to battery size.

Thickness is likely a sacrifice we would all have to make in foldables for the foreseeable future. That seems par for the course.
