Following today's keynote event that saw Apple introducing the new iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple allowed members of the media in attendance to spend some hands-on time with the new devices. MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera was at Apple Park for the event, so he's able to give us an early look at the iPhone 15 lineup, as well as his first thoughts.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are made from titanium, and they are noticeably lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro models. There are contoured edges that improve the feel of the iPhone in the hand, and the Pro models are overall much more comfortable to hold. Apple also cut down on bezel size for even more display than ever, and the Action Button that replaces the Mute Switch is super convenient.

Apple added a 5x zoom lens to the iPhone 15 Pro Max and at its 120mm focal length, you can get great portrait shots. There are options on both Pro models to change the focal length of the Main camera, which you can do just by tapping. It can be set to 24mm, 28mm, or 35mm, and the ability to change focal length is useful for pro photographers.

As for the standard iPhone 15 models, they're more Pro-like than ever with the addition of the Dynamic Island and the new matte glass back. Apple say it is using back glass that has color infused throughout the material, and it's a nice look, especially with the pastel color options.

Extremely underwhelming new iPhone and watch. Superior lack of innovation going on year after year.

Certainly seems like S-model upgrades which is not a bad thing. Refinements made the 5s one of the best models ever.

I don’t know what model to get yet but I
I’ll be jumping from an 8-plus that’s hanging on for life.

For me either model will be a major change and last me for years.

The pro model gets me. I love that they include features like ProRes 4k log at 60fps to a USB-C SSD. That's amazing. As a pro video guy you'd think I'd be eating that up. And I'm sure there are guys like me that will. But like... it's my phone. I've got video cameras for stuff like that. I shoot more photos and video on my iPhone than any other cameras I've ever owned, but I like them being compressed and simple to use. The reason I use it so much is because it's simple to pull out and shoot real quick. I don't have to mess with apertures or deal with log modes and grading afterward. I don't need to shoot a production on my phone. I just need it to shoot a quick photo or video while I'm out and about. I don't need raw photos of gas receipts or ProRes log videos of Christmas morning.

So I get the appeal. There is that whole, "but what if..." mindset. But when I really think about it, the regular 15 has everything I need in a phone. Just not a big fan of those pastel colors. But it will be in a case anyway, so whatever.

The big story to me is the regular 15 gets the telephoto back with the new higher res sensor. And the USB-C will be handy for needing to keep track of less cable connector types around the house. Even though it isn't even USB 3 speeds let alone USBb 4, which is kind of stupid.

I’ll be trading in my 14 Pro Max and my back up iPhone 13 for the 15 Pro Max and the 15 plus 😀

You only live once!
I’m getting the 15PM too, but keeping my 14PM and 13PM — the Sierra Blue and Silver polished stainless frames won’t be available anymore, so I can’t part with them! So I’ll have a backup to my backup 😁

Really interested in what the spatial computing videos will look like on the Apple Vision Pro. I plan on purchasing the AVP and am beyond happy the ability to shoot 3D video is built into the phone.

Curious about this feature. It seems highly likely that shooting in it on the phone is going to capture TWO versions, presumably together: a version to work in Vpro and a version to view on iPhone (or other 2D screens) too.

Vpro often gets cast as modern-day 3D TV by the pessimists among us... but one thing about that 3D is that people shot video for either 3D or not. If it was shot in 3D but then viewed on a 2D screen, it tended to look odd. So I wonder what happens here? Does it show spatial only for Vpro and thus (may) look odd when reviewed on iPhone (and other 2D screens) or are there 2 versions (or perhaps just one camera's video shown when watched on 2D screens but then both merged when viewed in Vpro?

I look forward to real reviews to hopefully get some clarity to this question.

Nevertheless, I think it's fantastic that the mighty iPhone has this advanced support for a good Vpro benefit. This has potential to get many millions of Vpro-ready home movies/moments in place ahead of the Vpro launch. Accumulated content is good for any new product.

Long ago, I recall buying a number of this new kind of "record" called a CD before I owned a CD player... essentially assembling a little collection of desirable discs even before I was able to play them. This has potential to replicate that accumulation for many millions of people before the playback hardware arrives.

Given this ability to shoot it, presumably without sacrifices for anyone only ever wanting to view it on 2D screens, I'd definitely shoot in it myself... even if my interest in Vpro was towards nill. If I was one of the pessimists but Vpro eventually grows on me years from now, there will be no coming back to my pessimist year(s) and reshooting anything I consider important memories or desirable home movies. Instead of regretting the "woulda, shoulda, coulda opp lost" it seems better to just capture it and decide much later if one wants to keep the immersive version or dump the extra (presumably video file size) for the 2D-version only.

As I sometimes watch blurry home movies shot in the 1950s-1990s, I always wish I could somehow go back with modern cameras to capture those nearly lost moments in 4K or higher. Instead, they are forever limited to the quality available at the time. This iPhone feature makes it possible to capture some extra in our phone movies vs. looking back from the future and wishing we would have done so back in 2023, 2024, etc. Whether we know we'll have that wish or not out in the future, just going ahead and grabbing the extra seems like a wise choice in the present.

If anyone is on the fence about colors, this video is really great to give a good idea. I am going with Natural Titanium. Absolutely stunning. iPhone 15 Pro Max in Natural Titanium pre-order is done, confirmed with Verizon, Apple Card set, ready for checkout Friday morning. I have never owned a Max iPhone. Very excited this year.

Everything is an S model nowadays, the product line is quite mature, for someone coming from a 13 or earlier though it should be a nice upgrade IMHO.
Yeah I am going from a 13 Pro to 15 Pro Max, and have also never owned a Max sized iPhone since going full screen. The last large iPhone I owned was the 7 Plus so this should be a nice upgrade!

The color and look of the glass and frame are irrelevant since an iPhone isn't suitable to be handled in the wild without a case. How about developing a phone that doesn't require a case the instant you buy it?
I use mine without a case, always have, and haven’t cracked a phone since my iPhone 5 I threw at a wall during a breakup lol. I feel like too many people handle their phones the same way they did when they were getting them for free on contract, ya know? Have to treat it like the $1200 computer that it is

Plus if Apple so much as made them out of plastic a whole other demographic would complain they didn’t feel premium enough ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s also worse for the environment
